I have my mother’s mouth and my father’s eyes; on my face they are still together.

You are her mother.
Why did you not warn her,
hold her like a rotting boat
and tell her that men will not love her
if she is covered in continents,
if her teeth are small colonies,
if her stomach is an island
if her thighs are borders?
What man wants to lie down
and watch the world burn
in his bedroom?
Your daughter’s face is a small riot,
her hands are a civil war,
a refugee camp behind each ear,
a body littered with ugly things.
But God,
doesn’t she wear
the world well?

Why did we ever put god up in the sky? Somewhere so far away…
Removing him from the earth, from our people, our rivers, and our mountains.
Why can't heaven be here on earth? So, the wonder of life don't have to be a trial of redemption. And the wonders of the world not a trial of temptation.
What if we didn't have to look up? But only to the closest thing next to us.
With the divine belonging to all of us and for all of us to touch.
Maybe then would we see how worthy we are, and how worthy every stranger, every lover, every stone and drop of water… how worthy it all is of life.
