Something I love about confronting Cazador is how he obviously never processes that Astarion has friends until it's too late.

Petras and Dalyria must have mentioned that Astarion wasn't alone when they met him, but when you read Cazador's journal? He's 100% fixated on Astarion. How Astarion stood in the sun, how Astarion was willing and able to disobey him. And when Astarion shows up, Cazador barely acknowledges the party at all - and sure, that's partly because this is Astarion's moment in the narrative, but Cazador doesn't so much as ask why these random strangers are there! They're not part of his plans, so they don't exist.

And then they immediately save his errant spawn from the ritual and start beating his ass.

Just. What must have been going through Cazador's head when that fight starting turning against him? 'Is that... the Blade of Frontiers? Why is a monster hunter - and is that a cleric? - helping a vampire spawn? An undead? Ah, but they must be treating it as a necessary evil to have a chance to slay me, of course - hold on, why is the cleric healing Astarion? Why does that wizard keep Counterspelling everything I'm casting at Astarion, why waste the spells when I'm not even targeting him? Did... did that druid just cast Daylight on Astarion's weapons? And that brute of a tiefling - that's not just disgust in her eye when she looks at me, it's fury - and she keeps putting herself in front of Astarion, why in the hells would she - she's running right at me- '

I hope that one of the last things Cazador ever knew was the choking realisation that Astarion didn't just come back strong, or free. Astarion came back loved.

Cosmic latte

I wanted to do a little series introducing the main characters of Lamplight Letters for any followers, new and old, who might be interested in the story! Lamplight Letters is a story that explores the pasts of both Amelia and Clive. They don't ever interact canonically, but they're my two favorite characters in the series, and there's some interesting parallels between them which I'll talk about in a later post, and so I've long wondered what their relationship would be like if they did know each other. What kind of dynamic would they have? Would they be childhood friends, intellectual rivals, have awkward crushes on each other? Would Amelia's granddad have somehow known Clive's adopted mother? Would reporter Clive have ever interviewed Amelia as the British chess champion or about her experience during the game for eternal life? And in a battle of wits, who would win, Amelia or Clive?

I created Lamplight Letters to answer these questions and to expand on Amelia's character from the few clues we are given about her life and personality in Eternal Diva. I didn't notice her much the first time I watched the film, but on subsequent watches I grew more and more attached to her. I loved how quiet and pensive she was, as well her cute design and how she was a chess champion at only sixteen. I wanted to know the story behind how she got there. Prior to Queen's Gambit, I didnt really know of many books/movies/shows that focused on women in chess and I thought it would be interesting to research and write about it. And then there was Amelia's granddad. She plays the game of eternal life to save him, but later is seen in the credits placing a chess piece by his grave with a small smile, having seemingly found peace and acceptance after his death. But any changes she goes through are mostly kept in the background of ED.

There's just enough information presented about her to leave me wanting so much more, from her relationship to her granddad to what must have been her meteoric rise in the chess world.

Lamplight Letters attempts to fill in all these blanks given in Eternal Diva. The story starts off with 13-year-old Amelia leaving home to go to a prestigious and mysterious school her grandfather previously attended.

I don't want to give any spoilers away, but the story will answer questions like how Amelia became interested in chess in the first place, how she grew so close to her granddad, what happened to her parents, her journey to become a chess champion, and how she and Clive get along, because he just so happens to be attending the same school...

And you'll learn lots of little head-canons I have for Amelia like what her favorite kind of tea is and why she tugs on her hair so much. All while staying as true as possible to her character as revealed in Eternal Diva.

So, if you like Amelia and ever wanted to see her story expanded on, please check it out! The first three chapters are out, with more on the way, including short stories and art. I love her character so much and can't wait to share what I've got in store for her, Clive, and the other characters of Lamplight Letters.
