shading colour tips

hey yall its me the Art Mom™ to help you shade pretty

rule 1: DO NOT SHADE WITH BLACK. EVER. IT NEVER LOOKS GOOD. 

red- shade with a slightly darker shade of purple

orange- slightly darker and more saturated shade of red

yellow- i think like..a peach could work but make it a really light peach

green- shade with darker and less saturated shade of blue or teal

blue- shade with purple

purple- a shade thats darker than the purple you’re using and maybe a little pink (MAYBE blue)

pink- darker shade of red

white- a really light lavender or blue..or i guess any really light colour??

black- okay listen dont use pure black to colour anything unless you want to leave it with flat colours because you cant really shade black lol

grey- a slightly darker shade of purple or blue (less saturated)

brown- slightly darker and less saturated shade of purple or red

aaaaand thats all i got lol. let me know if there is anything i should add to this list!!

HotGlue Casting Tutorial

Supplies:

 1 high temp hot glue gun

Silicon mold. You can use a fondant silicon mold (The ones used to decorate cakes) A soap silicon mold, or resin silicon mold. The mold MUST be made of silicon for this method to work

High temp glue sticks

Step 1:

Wait for the glue gun to heat up fully (I let mine sit for around 3-5 minuets) Once fully heated fill each mold up all the way. If a little goes over the edges that is okay you can cut he extra away.

Step 2:

Wait for each piece to cool fully before removing from mold. Once they are fully cooled you can lay them out to be painted. First layer is a primer. The choice of primer is up to you, I picked white. This is an outside part of the job as it calls for spray paint. Place each piece face up and spray a layer of primer on. I ended up spraying about 4 layers. You can also paint the underside if you wish.

Step 3:

Once the primer is fully dried you are ready to paint the detail. Depending on what you are doing you can either use a colored can of spray paint or you can hand paint the pieces with acrylic paint. I’ve done both methods as I needed everything to be solid gold for my Seth cosplay while for my White Rabbit cosplay as I needed a mixture of colors on one piece. Finishing can be, leave as is or add a gloss of your choice.

Step 4: 

Adding the pieces to your project is really easy, just turn the glue gun back on and wait for it to heat up once more. Add glue to the back of the cast piece before carefully placing it in the proper location. 

You can make everything from buttons, clasps, gems, to pieces that look like armor.

DISCLAIMER!!! THIS METHOD USES A HIGH TEMP HOT GLUE GUN WHICH CAN CAUSE A SECOND TO EVEN A THIRD DEGREE BURN. BE CAREFUL WHEN USING THIS METHOD. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BURN YOURSELF, SOMEONE ELSE, OR ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER.

Hey there, I am going to be a first time user of liquid latex for coloured skin and nose prosthetics. Any tips or tricks that you might be able to share with me and your followers? :)

I’ve worked a bunch with liquid latex and can certainly share some tips and information:

Liquid latex works really well as an adhesive but will bond permanently to itself. So if you have a latex appliance and you attach it with liquid latex, that liquid latex will stay. Most appliances aren’t really made for repeated applications, but if you want yours to last then stick it on with spirit gum, pros-aide or another skin-safe adhesive

Liquid latex has an incredibly strong ammonia smell. Work in an area with ventilation. 

Liquid latex cures by air drying, this means that any mold you are using should facilitate that. Plaster is commonly used to make molds for latex. 

Also, liquid latex should be applied in layers. This is so that the outer layer doesn’t dry and prevent the inner layer(s) or underside from being able to dry out. It might take awhile to get the thickness you need.

Liquid latex will shrink slightly as it dries, plan for this.

Liquid latex sticks to itself. After your appliance has cured, brush with a light dusting of talcum powder to prevent it from sticking to itself.

Liquid latex works well when there is something to grip on to. This is why many liquid latex tutorials suggest using tissue paper. It allows the latex to build up quicker and gives it a support structure.

If you’re making an appliance, SUPER thin edges are the key to blending it well. Read this. 

Liquid latex is not like foam latex and won’t create the same quality of appliances.
