Unknown- The Bed.

How many scenes do we have of Qian and Yuan in Qian’s bed? In the series Qian’s bed practically becomes a secondary character, a witness and the set of so many interesting or pivotal moments. In episode 3, lying on the bed, their discussion foresees what’s going to happen, Yuan’s going abroad. And his reluctance to go is even clearer while his eyes are on his older brother as he listens to him speak.

‘I want to stay with you like this forever,’ he says. In the morning, we get a glimpse of Yuan’s dream, and it’s basically the first time in the series he’s truly happy. There is no hesitation, sadness in his behaviour. His smile, his happiness is so palpable. And we, the audience can’t help but being moved by that. On another note, I feel like Chris was really sleeping in that scene lol, he has a couple of spasms in his fingers which one can’t really pretend to have. But perhaps he’s just that great of an actor.

Then you have episode 5, after Yuan confesses he likes boys. Qian is as always, his little brother's guardian, as San Pang leaves, he let him sleep, covering him. I love how Qian doesn’t care if San Pang saw them sleeping in the same bed. He won’t let Yuan feel like an outcast. The whole world could hate him, but he won’t let him feel unwelcome.

The beginning of episode 8 when Qian finally gets a real glimpse of his brother after so long and he is caught. How the night changes, now Qian is the one watching him sleep. And you can see the distance that Yuan is keeping for now. He isn’t sleeping next to his brother like he used to, only his head is on the bed. There is a cut in (Youku BTS) where we see Yuan coming to Qian’s bedroom, to check on him, pull the cover over him and then sleeping there. Also force of habit, Yuan needed to make sure his brother was fine and he came in the room to ensure that. As San Pang says in another episode, ‘Yuan can’t bear to leave you alone.’

Still in that episode Yuan call his Ge, Wei Qian for the first time while sitting on Qian’s bed, showing him that now he’s grown up.  

The beginning of episode 10 is my favourite ‘bed’ scene, the pace, the music, the darkness is so beautiful. Yuan, who was calling him by his name, reminds him that he’s still his little brother, and he knows Qian wouldn’t be indifferent to his call. I find it slightly manipulative lol, but it’s well done. Qian can’t refuse Yuan’s request to sleep with him anyways because he needs it too. He didn’t voice it but him as well had been scared to death. Qian’s voice over is one of the most heartbreaking, it’s in his tone, the crack in his voice the way he delivers those lines are so moving. And lying in this bed, with Yuan in his arms, we can feel his walls are starting crumbling down.

Episode 11 comes and the bed becomes the haven of their love. Innocence lost, bliss found. It’s also where the morning after all of Yuan’s dreams come true, he has his brother all to himself.

 And this bed witnessed Yuan’s dream until he made it true. Qian’s bed is their territory, an island, a haven where they don’t even need to talk but can just feel.

Not sure how well versed you are in the Thai BL industry or the Thai industry in general, but are a lot of these actors from rich families? We know Mile's deal, Bible's family is also rich, Apo's family is allegedly also wealthy, and from my limited experience while they talk about the struggles of the industry I've never really heard financial struggles amongst those. (This isn't a knock btw, just genuinely curious because of posts/video I've seen about it)

I get this question a lot. Yes, many actors are from rich or well of families indeed. A young person, coming out of university, starting their life, etc. would have one goal to find a stable job to earn money, save, buy a car, help their family, etc. Thailand possesses assets and wealth. It has known a great economical growth and has managed to reduce poverty.  But it doesn’t have a fully developed economy yet, how could they? With the corruption, political instability, low productivity, debts and education issues, etc. And there is multidimensional poverty. Rural areas are impacted by poverty, and many men from rural places go look for work overseas.

Acting isn’t a stable job at all and it’s risky. The thing is making it in this industry isn’t easy above all in the beginning, you need to go out there, live in Bangkok, have a portfolio, go to castings, get a manager or agency behind you, etc. There are costs and not everyone can afford them. One can go through various seasons, privileged one where everyone wants you or one without any opportunities. Nothing is guaranteed and having a long and prosperous career isn’t easy. And while you struggle, who will pay your rent, your food, your clothes? One’s contract can also be very restrictive and one can be indebted to their agency (at the beginning). That is why having wealthy parents/family members can be very helpful.

And they can keep helping. One very successful role a year isn’t enough to pay your rent. That is why actors don’t only count on acting to earn money, brand deals do matter a lot.

Mile’s family is very wealthy, as for Bible, according to the leak conversations from his former work partner, his family lives well but they aren’t that wealthy. Apo’s family is very comfortable. Apo himself said his parents knew how to make money, give him money that he was swimming in a pool when he was young, his sister study abroad, etc. He also said he used to send his salary to his mother so she could save it for him, not to help her. It doesn’t sound like his family struggled.

In conclusion, having the means is damn helpful to enter the entertainment industry and to survive it until one can make it big. It’s not really fair to all but it’s the way it is.

I saw several posts (tumblr and twitter) about the NC scene on Unknown and who is top and bottom nonsense and people conclusions.

Well....I think that not only there is a lack of knowledge about Gay sex obviously but definitely a lack of knowledge about sex in general.

Not knowing isn't shameful, the issue is making assumptions, comments, etc. based on that ignorance. Saying I don't know doesn't make you an idiot, in the time we live in, it makes you a wise person.

I mean....I'm just going to mind my business and side eye people. What the fudge?!!!

Some Thoughts on Unknown.

Qian sending Yuan away to study abroad was a very sensible decision and actually the only rational one he could make at the time. The way he handled it wasn’t perfect, but he was backed into a corner. It’s not often a show manage to make you understand both position and not pick a villain in the situation.

One can understand Yuan pain and also understand why Qian pushed him away and was so cold. Qian is a strong person but Yuan is as well, they are both survivors who bonded over their pain, scars and fears. I felt for Yuan, to see him so sad and defeated, losing his home (Qian) and seeing him cry when he had been so strong for so long. I mean loving someone isn’t easy and he held on to a dream for so long so tightly just to see it shattered and he lost everything in a few seconds. Qian fought in illegal battles but it stopped eventually. Yuan was fighting a battle every single day, to contain his love, not to let it overwhelm him. And when you are a teenager you feel, more, so strongly. How could he not be depressed, and feel alone with his secret?

I loved how in the series Qian feel the weight of Yuan’s gaze on him and he often has to advert his eyes and he will frown. San Pang tells him his younger brother has feelings for him but he refuses to listen. There is no worse blind man than the one who doesn’t want to see. There is no worse deaf man than the one who doesn’t want to hear. He's familiar with pain survival and that situation is the unknown. He can’t see it, he can’t deal with it, acknowledging Yuan’s feelings will mean questioning his own emotions.

I feel like the time abroad was the catalyst for everything that happened between them and sealed their fate. If Yuan had remained Qian would have always considered him a child and would have kept running away. He wouldn’t have missed him as he did. Without his time away Yuan wouldn’t have been able snapped out of the fog he was in mentally, he wouldn’t have matured and come up with a plan.

But because Qian was raised in chaos, pain and loss, it’s the only language he could understand and bear to hear. He had to face losing Yuan, not once but twice, with Le ge and finding that letter to start acknowledging and questioning his emotions.

Qian wanted his little brother and sister to be happy because he’s their big brother. And yet he indirectly caused Yuan’s pain. By denying his own happiness, refusing it, Qian was denying his little brother his happiness as well. Why? Because Qian never believed for a second, he was worthy enough to be loved and Yuan showed him otherwise by fighting for him, for them and never giving up on him.

"Acting is a dangerous profession."

Some people will watch this extract and just brush if off perhaps as fanservice and miss the point completely. What I like about Chris and Xuan it’s how candid and honest they are about the whole process.

The host says it all, “acting is a dangerous profession,” and both actors agreed. She’s right. So many fans don’t get it, and they focus on the superficial. It’s not just a dangerous profession in Asia. In my opinion it’s more challenging there because most of entertainment industries in Asia rely a lot on Method acting and immersion. You have notice how they call themselves by their character names, on and off set and it has several purposes. I won’t dwell on them here because this post would be too long.

And you have method acting which I have several issues with. It’s basically psychology. I’m not going to write an essay on it here, it basically means one can convince themselves of anything and you can become anyone you want. It’s becoming someone else entirely for a time, by changing your habits based on your environment. You study a character and become them, by assuming their point of view, mannerism, state of mind etc. If they drink you start drinking, if they love someone you love them too etc. Some actors are strongly against method acting for a reason and stick to use their imagination which is way safer. In a live Xuan talked about how physically and mentally it impacted him.

You are still yourself but you can’t escape your character, their emotions bleeds into you. And you use it to play the best version of them by using your body. Of course, Xuan fell in love with his co-star and had all those “evil” thoughts. He learned to fall in love with him and make him the centre of his universe. The preparation for the role, to build a bond took longer than the whole filming.

So, any actor in their shoes will feel the same, if they say no well, they are either lying or just bad method actors, that’s it, no in between.

The trick is to use those emotions while filming and then to be able to let them go. And that’s the issue, because for many it takes time to do so and get rid of them. Notice how Xuan doesn’t say while they were filming NC scenes he had evil thoughts but he was sitting there, so before or even after. The thing is if you hold on to those emotions it can hurt your mental health. They can be addictive. Under those circumstances sometimes there is a co-pendency which appear between actors. I remember an actor explaining how he basically went through a heartbreak because he got attached to his co-star who was engaged to someone else and he was full of emotions for his on-screen partner. And those emotions weren’t there before they started filming. And they knew each other, they were friends before and he never felt that way about them. And his mind knew they weren’t a good match but he kept longing for them.

I talked here about the bubble actors found themselves in. And the best remedy to get rid of those feelings, thoughts are a healthy distance, and being back to oneself. I hear often, “they’re just acting, it’s their job…” etc. Actors aren’t robot. There is a process to play a role and they all have a process to get out of a particular challenging role. Obviously, all roles aren’t the same.

Another thing: Chris and Xuan are friends and were friends but under the circumstances, they don’t have the same friendship they had before filming, the one from a year or two years ago. Friendship 101 had specific boundaries, and now there are new ones in friendship 201. It’s not possible to know the taste of your friend’s mouth, their skin, and be in the same exact friendship. Actors are not robots there isn’t a reset button. Now there is a new set of boundaries. Perhaps before there wasn’t any skinship now because there are use to each other touch, there is more skinship. Before they wouldn’t talk about certain subject, now they can. I believe they gain and also lost some things. The only possibility MAYBE to go back to friendship 101 would be a complete separation for weeks, reset. But it’s not happening because there are promotions and also, you get use to seeing each other all the time, I guess.

Now method acting and falling in love, it happens of course, but has to go through the test of time and distance.

One has a girlfriend/boyfriend and start method acting with a co-star? LOL. 9 out 10 people will break up with their significant other, the GF or BF will leave, it happens all the time.

This isn't FANSERVICE anymore, this as a fan called it SELFSERVICE, they're enjoying those promotions way too much. By the way the hosts are screaming Chris and Xuan went far and beyond what was asked, I'm sure. LOL.

No matter what you think of fanservice, it doesn't work for anybody. With these two you can clearly see how comfortable they are with each other and they have the same energy. There is a great deal of trust and communication for them to behave like that, what you see here is something which doesn't appear enough among BL couples, a clear and honest partnership. They know each other and spent/spend a great deal of time together.

I'm not shocked by the kissing, if you kiss someone for several weeks, sometimes for hours, it's nothing. They won't be embarrassed or shamed showing two men kiss. They are having fun and I love how proud they are of their roles, and how candid and honest they are about the process (post about that coming soon). They can talk about the lovey-dovey moments and the silly arguments. It's so refreshing.

I love the let's kiss, and then hug like bros lol. This a pair one doesn't even need to ship, they don't need fans intervention lol. they do that themselves very well. In most interactions, they tell you, My Ge is the greatest, my Di is amazing, we are so compatible, so good together, we act so well together, we look so hot together, you only wish to be us lol. This is the best f**** you to any hater. I love that level of confidence. And the we don't give a flying f****** what you or anyone think of our behaviour vibes makes them hotter. Just enjoy it because they're adorable and hilarious.

The production company is as we speak patting themselves on their back for choosing so well.

Those two are a menace for all the hosts out there.

This is a huge accomplishment.

In the entertainment industry, it’s about Acting-Business and I don’t pay that much attention to the business side of it (brand deals, ads, etc.) even if I find it interesting. But this is a huge accomplishment. It was clearly coming when they flew him for Piaget 150th anniversary and all the posts they made about him.

European brands are usually more cautious than their American counterparts for instance when choosing global ambassadors so this is a bold choice, in my opinion. Bold because Apo has fans globally but isn’t globally known yet, do you get my meaning? And it also shows their trust in Apo. Ella Richards, Lee Junho are safe choices.

Apo is the choice coming from the heart, they saw his personality, his uniqueness, he looks like himself and nobody else, he follows the trends that suits him and this is basically what Piaget represents as well.

This kind of deal doesn’t happen without the brand studying and following closely the celebrity. They noticed how he conducted himself, the fact that he was scandals free, etc. And of course, because it’s about business, they paid attention to his fanbase and their support.

That’s why you shouldn’t pay attention to haters, they don’t matter, brands don’t care about them. They can say whatever they want, brands look at the reputation, the love, unconditional support a celebrity has. They know Apo’s fans would show up for him, will hype and trend everything he does. They also trust the fact that their association with him will make him bigger than he already is. The news will be in entertainment, and business platforms and people would wonder who the heck is this talented, charming, beautiful man from Thailand.

You bet I’m proud. Also. I don’t forget that this man with a darker skin from Thailand has just been named the global ambassador for one of the most luxurious and famous brands in the world. And I hope he is an inspiration for every single dark-skinned young girl and boy in Thailand not to change themselves to fit in the industry but to know they can thrive as well because they’re damn beautiful.

You should watch love for love's sake. It's about a young man who meets his senior and they talk about the older man's book and the fate of one of the characters that Myungha finds awful. Soon enough he finds himself in a game where he has to make that character he talked about happy.

The man is back in his 19 year old body in high school, it's cute, it's funny and deeper than it looks. It shows how when we start caring about others we also find ourselves.

The actors are good and it's clear they enjoyed playing their parts and are fond of their characters.

We don't talk enough about the magic that happens when cast and crew are in harmony and work with love and respect for a project. It seems to be the case here, when actors say they would love to play, and film their series again, trust me, it was a great experience.

I believe it's easier to find that harmony when you have a small budget, small project without pressure or ego.

If you need a huge hug go watch it.

I have a question, if you aren't watching Unknown, what the heck are you doing with your life?

It's one of the best series out there, so well written, poetic and beautiful, to the point that it doesn't matter if it ends with broken hearts, tears and suffering, as long as you get to see the story end.

It's about two brothers (not biologically related). They aren't the Lannisters. The younger adopted one has been in love with his older brother who rescued him from the streets for a long time. The older brother would do anything for him and their little sister. It's about family, love, sacrifice, etc.

It really shows that when you have great actors, a well written story, sky is the limit. It's written in a way where the audience can assume each point of view, see the struggles of each party and understand their pain and the mistakes they make.

I believe it's nearly impossible to hide love, hiding hate is so damn easy. But love is another thing. One of my favourite quotes is when one of the characters tell Yuan (the younger brother) exactly that. "Even if you close your mouth it comes out of your eyes." And vice-versa.

It's ongoing, 9 episodes/12 so far, it's highly addictive and great.
