July 18, 1969- The Organization of American States (OAS) gathered but and tried to stop the war. El Salvador pulled their troops from Honduras and the OSA insured the safety of the Salvadoran immigrants to go back home. This war had casualties of 6,000 killed and 15,000 injured. The war had also damaged the economies of both countries badly.

July 14-17, 1969- El Salvador and Honduras been invading each others countries and bombing ports and homes. Honduras got aid in for ammo from their neighboring country, Nicaragua. El Salvador’s troops eventually ran out of fuel and ammo, since their supply line was destroyed. But the Salvadorans were desperate to attack Honduras capital, Tegucigalpa.

July 14, 1969- Within 3 weeks after the final game, El Salvador had cut diplomatic ties with Honduras and declared war. The President of El Salvador had sent air forces with explosives, to bomb into Honduras main airport.

June 27 1969- Both countries had their final game in Mexico City. This final match would determine who would be moving forward to the World Cup. Honduras had lost to El Salvador at 2-3. In Honduras, attacks on the Salvadoran immigrants had increased. This day was the starting peak of La Guerra del Fútbol. (The Football War)

June 15, 1969- Local fans of El Salvador surrounded their opponents hotel, the nights before their second game, to taunt the Honduras team and cause violent outbreaks. The following day, Honduras lost to El Salvador at 3-0. Fans at the stands started attacking each other at the stadium. Additionally, Salvadorans who lived in Honduras were attacked within hours. Hondurans were furious of their loss and destroyed Salvadoran’s homes and stores. It caused the immigrants to flee back to their country.

June 1969, 18 year-old Amelia Bolaños, could not handle El Salvador’s loss of in the first play-offs. She took her fathers pistol and shot herself in her heart. The Salvadorans turned this incident into rage against Honduras. They considered her a national hero in their country. This incident had made tensions even worst.

June 1969, the 1970 World Cup qualifying matches had begun. El Salvador and Honduras were up against each other for three matches.

In 1963, Honduras president Oswaldo Lopéz, enforced a land reform law. He wanted the Salvadorans to have no land. Their land would eventually be given to the Hondurans. This law cause the hatred between both countries.Within the following years, the countries had cause violent crimes and hostilities.

By 1963, huge US agricultural companies started to notice immigrants had settled in Honduras. They worried about them being competition since the Salvadorans were farmers. Therefore, the companies asked Honduras president, Oswaldo Lopéz, to take action on the immigrants.

During the 1960′s, El Salvador had about 3.3 million people in population. Honduras had a population about 2.3 million people. Since El Salvador is a small country, it caused families and farmers to seek for land because of the overpopulation during the time. 300,000 Salvadoran immigrants moved to Honduras for more land and jobs.
