“Yeah.. I thought I reserved this one.” she mumbled. Furrowing her eyebrows she offered a soft smile. “Thanks, What no? I dont to do that. Forget it, You can come in. Whats your name?”
“That’s entirely possible, I didn’t get to reserve the room myself because I forgot my library card at home and was hoping that you might just leave since you look like you should be at home. But thank you, anyhow,” she says, setting her books down on the table and getting comfortable in the seat. “Laila. Laila Tomago. And yours?”

“Meh, the matchmaker thing isn’t that scary. Mostly everyone has been matched up with the same people every year, but with so many new faces – that might change. If you hate ‘em, then you hate ‘em and tell ‘em to screw off. Then go drink the punch that’s probably going to be spiked and have a good night.”
“Last year, I didn’t sign up but I thought that I should this year to make a new friend, but still, I’m not a person who trusts easily and I don’t think the questionnaire actually captured my personality. That’s true though, I could definitely do that instead.”

:・゚✧ “UH YEAH, RIGHT,” HE CHUCKLED BECAUSE HE DIDN’T REALLY, BUT HE remembered watching something that called it revertigo; he’s seen it happen, but when his friends were mostly dogs ‘til he came here and the only old schoolmate he knew of his parents’ was Cruella, it was kind of hard to have a first hand experience. “Ah, well, that makes sense, but at least it sounds enjoyable when you’re not trying to do something difficult or uh whatever, right?” Kind of like how it was with the puppies around and their barking, then his dad’s own music. But his parents were also respectful of him doing homework, so that helped. “Yep, but then those ninety-nine had puppies, too, and those puppies had puppies not too long ago. It’s a lot of dogs,” he grinned, though, since he loved them. He almost took one with him last time he went back, but they had Chuck’s dog and the cottage wasn’t meant for several large dogs and people. So he played with Riley instead. “Right, well, I guess I will do it, then. Chuck keeps telling me to break out of my shell more, this shouldn’t be too bad.”
“It is, they were a lot of fun, and such a great support system so, even if it was just my mom and me, I still felt like I had a big family.” Her house was never quiet and if it was, it was because everyone was at someone else’s house. Laila never really felt alone because of her mother’s friends. “Goodness, how did your family care for all of them? I know some parents think it’s a big deal just taking care of one dog much less more than a hundred. I can barely imagine caring for that many dogs, Chuck’s dog isn’t even mine and I don’t know how I’d fare with a dog of my own.” Laila loved Chuck’s dog, of course, even if it did get dog hair everywhere but one pet was good enough for her between the three of them. “Yeah! It’ll be fun, and there are other things to do that don’t necessarily include your match. Of course, you should be spending the night with your match, but if you don’t, it’ll be fun anyway.”

✧ , ♜,♘, ▀
✧ — how clean their living space is now, and/or would be ideally:
Even though Laila tries really hard at keeping her living space really clean, after a couple days, it usually ends up being a mess anyway. She has the Chair that has sweaters and hoodies draped over it. She wears a million different shoes that are strewn next to the door because she doesn’t decide on what to wear until she’s literally at the door. Food she’ll clear away right away because she hates seeing old food or old mugs everywhere but everything else is a mess. She has piles of books and notebooks everywhere. She’s always losing pens because she leaves them where ever. Still, she tries to clean it at least once a week or when she knows she’s having people over.
♜ —interior decorating aesthetic:
Laila’s a very family-oriented person or friend-oriented, so she has a lot of pictures of family members and friends on her walls with nice frames and stuff. She prefers a more modern aesthetic, so lots of minimalism and she likes more neutral furniture so beige tones and such. It’s a cross between modern and cozy aesthetic because while her furniture and the styling is very modern, there’s a lot of quirks that make it seem cozier. Like, she obviously has lots of picture frames of her family, she has throw pillows with sayings that Honey Lemon stitched on (usually very corny and cheesy), and stuff like that.
♘ —any pets they might have:
She has none. One, her mom doesn’t think she can take care of a pet, and two, Laila thinks she’s right. She’s really busy and gets caught up in her own world a lot so she doesn’t think she has what it takes to care for a cat or a dog.
▀ —what they’d hide under the bed:
Her ballet shoes. She never had the heart to throw them out or leave them in her home in San Fransokyo so they just sit and collect dust under her bed. Besides that, old notebooks maybe. She wants to be a novelist so she has a lot of notebooks with random stuff she writes. She keeps them all so if she’s experiencing writer’s block, she can look through old stuff and edit them for fun and inspiration.

☹ ☃ ♆
☹ — response to a leaky faucet or other household problem:
Laila’s first response is to call on Chuck or Carson to see what’s wrong with it since they’re her cottagemates. But if she was living alone, she’d just about call anybody she considers a friend or even her mom. She doesn’t mess with stuff like that because she’s worried she’ll just mess things up more.
☃ — what they wear around the house:
Shorts and a hoodie, usually. Not jean shorts but like pajama shorts? Like, to be honest, I’m thinking of very specific shorts that you can find at H&M and this could be a hit or miss reference, but yeah. She prefers comfort when she’s just at home and usually, the shorts and hoodie is fine to wear outside so if she needs to go to the store really quick or go running or whatever, she doesn’t need to change into something more appropriate because it’s fine.

♆ ♨ ✂ ♟
♆ — the worst kind of neighbor they could have, and how they deal with them:
Laila would be really annoyed if her neighbors were in a band and always obnoxiously played rock music at bad times like late at night or early in the morning because it would keep her up or wake her up far earlier than she wanted. She doesn’t mind calming, quiet music like when Carson plays piano but if it’s really loud and she can’t sleep through it, it’s a no go. She’d probably go over there herself and threaten to call the cops or something absurd if they kept playing. If they didn’t follow through, she’d actually call the cops. Laila doesn’t go back on her word.
♨ — their cooking ability (or lack thereof):
Laila’s pretty independent and she can cook for herself but it’s nothing great like steak or whatever. She can make a decent bowl of mac and cheese and she’s okay at following directions so she’s good at making food that’s more technical. Laila prefers Korean food to most anything but that she’ll usually just buy because she thinks that when she makes it, it isn’t as good. Which is more or less true, Laila’s cooking is edible and it doesn’t taste bad, but it definitely isn’t amazing. It’s usually because she puts too little salt or she doesn’t cook it for long enough.
✂ — how well they do yardwork (or blow up the lawnmower):
Laila is absolutely terrible at doing yardwork, it’s too tedious. She can maybe mow the lawn but it’s not done super well because she gets too restless and gets bored halfway through. She can never ever pull up weeds or do gardening though, it’s not enough movement for her.
♟— if they like board games, and how good they are at ‘em:
The only board game Laila is kind of good at is Scrabble because she knows a lot of really obscure words or a lot of really long words. She can’t play Sorry because she gets too mad when she plays it and Monopoly is too long for her to get through an entire game. Yeah, Laila doesn’t like most board games unless it’s not just sitting around and rolling dice. Pictionary, if you consider it a board game, is better but Laila hates drawing so she hates it still.

Melody scrunched her nose and shook her head no at the dress. She wasn’t much of a poofy dress person. Her everyday style consisted of either crop tops or giant sweaters – she liked simple. “Well what are you looking for? Maybe I can help.” Melody found herself smirking at Laila’s rationalization of her attitude and gave a nod, pushing herself off of the racks of clothing. “Well that’s comforting!” Melody chuckled, “Sometimes I just feel like a monster so thanks for that. By tomorrow, I’m totally going to feel like myself again, hopefully.”
Laila puts the dress back on the rack, and looks through the ones behind it. Truthfully, she didn’t know what she was looking for, always caught between going with something glittery and poofy, reminiscent of her ballet days or with something that was simple and understated and more honestly reflected her personality. “I think maybe not something so poofy and large, but still ornate. So somewhere between the previous dress and this,” she pulls out a simple floor length black gown with a deep V. “This is nice, but accentuates the parts of me I don’t care for. Besides, it is comforting. Do your thing, Melody, the people you love will know how to differentiate between a day where you’re being cranky and your real personality.”

“You’ve got the wrong room.” Adalene said quickly not even sure if she was accurate she turned her head to see who was at the door. She had just gotten in a feud with her dad and rubbed her eyes, letting out a sigh and organising her binders.
“Oh, maybe I do,” she replies, turning back to look at the label on the door before shaking her head. "No, I don’t think I don’t. But you can have the room if you want, you look like you need it more than I do.” Laila adjusts the strap of her book bag, before offering, “I can also play emotional punching bag if you need one.”

I genuinely no longer believe that there’s can be worse feeling in the world than falling asleep with a laptop wide open autoplaying a ten hour version of the Cantina theme from Star Wars. That damn song is going to be stuck in my head for the next year now.
“I used to do that on purpose the week that I had a performance for ballet, I just played it so that it was stuck in my head where ever I was and mentally go through all the steps. But anyway, the Cantina theme is catchy though!”

:・゚✧ “HOW DO THEY ACT LIKE TEENAGERS?” HE ASKED WITH MILD CURIOSITY as his fingers stilled within his pocket and he listened quietly. “Yeah, it’ll be over in about a month – I don’t want their fun over, but it would be nice to play on a grand again. Don’t even have one of those at home. Too expensive when there’s so many dogs around ( puppies of the previous puppies mostly since dog’s lives weren’t that long ). But still puppies coming from puppies of ninety-nine puppies? That’s a lot of dogs. But they had the plantation, so that was good. “Well, thanks. Oh, yeah, right the Valentine’s Ball. You think I could fill out that thing just to find a friend? I don’t care their age, I’m just not looking for anything…”
“Well, they’ve all been friends since college, and you know how when you’re with people you knew when you were younger, you kind of act like the way you did then? It’s kind of the same thing, it’s like they’re still in college when they’re with each other and they were, and are, still so close to each other. Plus, they’re all so young at heart. Except for Wasabi, I guess, but everyone else,” she rambles and rambles because while her mother’s friends weren’t her real uncles and aunts, they were as good as family. “Ninety-nine puppies? Damn. I can’t even picture that many dogs in one place. I mean, probably? I don’t necessarily think that just because you get matched up with someone that it means you’re supposed to date and fall in love, I think it’s just compatibility. And that could mean a relationship but it could also mean friendship. I’m not looking for anything either, I kind of just like participating in stuff.”

Melody rolled her eyes, surrendering to the guilt she felt for snapping in the first place. “It is. I usually preach that myself, so thank you for your honesty,” Crossing her arms, Melody leaned further into the racks of clothes, wanting to really just get sucked into them and disappear. “Thanks. i’m sure I will, too – I’m just looking in the wrong places. That’s pretty,” she pointed to the tulle-y tutu-esque piece that Laila held up. “I’m…alright. There’s a few minor inconveniences in my life, but also great things so it’s no excuse to be so cranky.”
“Oh, always, Melody,” she replies, feigning indifference at her change in tone. Laila looks up as her fingers pull gently at the fabric of the dress, giving it another once over. “Yeah, it’s pretty, it’s just– not what I’m looking for. Do you wanna hold on to it?” She holds it out to the other; sure, she she gave up ballet but that didn’t mean she didn’t miss it. “I’m cranky for worse reasons. It might not be an excuse but who really cares? It might make me more cranky but my response is my business just like the way you act isn’t anyone else’s business but yours.”

“Am I the only one who’s actually ready for this masquerade? Or is that why the bippity boppity boutique is always super busy now?”
“Ready is a relative term. I’ve got my dress and outfit all planned so I’m ready, but I’m kind of nervous because I’m doing the matchmaker thing and, even though I trust whoever’s behind it, what if I hate whoever my match is? I’m kind of picky about this stuff.”

:・゚✧ HIS SMILE SOFTENED AND HE NODDED WHILE HIS FINGERS PLAYED IN HIS pocket. “Right, yeah, of course. Just know you can still tell me to quiet it down or put in my headphones or whatever. I don’t mind it. I’d love to go practice at Pride Rock or the band rooms, but with the musical going, there’s a lot more people in them than there usually is, you know?”
“A little noise has never bothered me, my mother’s friends are always over at the house and they always act like teenagers together so I really don’t mind the music. It’s much more pleasant to the ears, anyhow. Right, yeah, the musical. At least it’ll be over in a month, then you can go back. In the meantime, however, you’re welcome to play for as long as you like at the cottage. I’ll be out anyway because there’s a lot of stuff to plan for the Valentine’s Day Ball.”

“That’s exciting! But most things do— come up a lot faster, I mean, and I’m sure you’ll be very good. Maybe, it’s just that I don’t know how to be anyone but myself, and I’m really very bad at lying, in general.”

“Then lie,” Melody deadpanned, growing angrier at herself for being such a crab in the first place, but also glad to be able to let out a bit of her frustration on someone. Nearly burying herself in racks of clothes out of exasperation, Melody cocked her head and looked over at the girl, “Well you’re tall so something like that would really elongate you. I have to wear like, five-inch heels to pull off wearing most evening gowns.”
“And here I thought honesty was the best policy, but I’ll keep that in mind for next time,” Laila quips, but she scrutinizes Melody. Though they had their differences, she was usually never met with this much irritation until at least a few more minutes into the conversation. “I suppose you’re right. You’ll find something, even if you do have to wear five-inch heels.” She pulls out a dress that reminds her of an old ballet costume she wore several years ago before deciding to just ask Melody. “Hey, is something bothering you? You’re usually not so cranky.”

:・゚✧ NOT KNOWING WHAT TO SAY WAS SOMETHING THEY HAD IN COMMON, he was most comfortable with Chuck and Dylan, everyone else was kind of out of that bubble. He tried, though, sometimes. Things could be better, though, hopefully he’ll get there, but he’ll probably always be quiet, even if he isn’t awkward at that point. It was better than anxiety, though! So that would certainly be something. Wouldn’t it? “Oh, thanks, Laila.” He hadn’t expected that. “Been playing for years, I’m just glad it doesn’t bother you at the cottage.”
Carson was her roommate but that was where their relationship ended, so they were somewhere in the middle of acquaintanceship and friendship. “Of course,” she replies, nodding her head. Laila was an artist, different from him but still the same, and she knew that words of encouragement went a long way. “Carson, if it did bother me, you would know because I would have moved out a long time ago.”
