Excellent analysis as always!
I have the headcanon that it’s directly linked to what happened to his wife and his daughter: Joseph was fully focused on getting reunited with his brothers and founding his own church, scrupulously following what God asked him to do, putting all his efforts and resources to reach these goals, before meeting his wife-to-be. Their relation got more and more serious, with them settling down, their wedding, their financial problems to face, the pregnancy, so much so he started getting more and more involved in his family life and securing the future of the three of them, still looking for his brothers as best as he could but not putting as much energy in fulfilling the Prophecy as before (Prophecy that was his n°1 task before becoming quite secondary). God is generous but merciless when needed: He punished Joseph with his wife’s death as a big warning and put him in front of the hardest choice ever, asking him to kill his daughter to prove Him he was still the one he chose to be the Father and the main tool of His great plan (“You crossed the red line by being distracted from the holy mission you accepted from me and I had to put you on the right path again by killing your wife, but I give you a second chance: show me you’re still worthy by sacrificing your child, so I can fully trust you again with the task I gave you.” à same thing with God giving humankind a second chance with the opportunity to join Eden’s Gate instead of staying in the “old world” and being punished with a painful death during the Collapse). Joseph passed his test and perfectly learnt the lesson.
This is what he refers to when he tells the Deputy “You’ve been given a gift. You can choose to accept it… or cast it aside” during the Purification cutscene, briefly and sadly staring into space + in the Bliss with “I don’t claim to be a perfect man”: he has a deep and painful experience of what happens when you don’t obey God’s will.
And this is also why he seems so strict with John, during the Purification scene and through his voice message at the Ranch too: more than for Jacob, for Faith or for any of his followers, he’s worried (rightly or wrongly) that John’s past bad habits could drift him away from what God wants from him, and he MUST be sure that it never happens. He MUST protect his little brother more than anyone else, even if it means putting pressure on him and risking seeming cold, heartless, severe, always micro-managing what John does. Because there is absolutely no way that he will let his baby bro go through the same hell he had to endure when he had to prove his devotion to God by killing his own daughter. And it’s hard, painful even, because Joseph knows that it’s fully on John, no matter how hard he tries to keep him on the right tracks: it’s John and John alone, like any other human being in Hope County, who’s judged by God at any given second and thus is the only one who can choose his own path, shaping his destiny without having a clear image of how far God can go to show anyone his discontent.
In a word, Joseph is empathetic by nature, and his tragic story made him even more paternal as he doesn’t want his loved ones and his followers to be as severely punished as he once was. He deeply cares for them because he sincerely loves them and vividly remembers the pain he went through, not wanting any of them to experience it in turn. He saw what is coming, and he knows what happens if you fail.
I've noticed that Joseph's empathy and compassion for others is all or nothing. Like one moment he's gouging some guy's eyes out and having no reaction to Joey being tortured, then the next he's begging the deputy to let him save them even after they killed his whole family.
I know! To me, people who describe Joseph as a cruel “psychopath” incapable of compassion are wrong. In fact, Greg Bryk explained he thought there was “a wonderful empathy about him” and it’s something he must have kept in mind while playing the character.
He also said the Father was “dangerous in the depth of his love, and his commitment to an idea and to his truth” because this, to him, “matters more than anything... or anybody”, and I think it summarizes Joseph perfectly. He’s very much capable of love, but his faith in the Voice and his mission is so strong that, if somebody is suffering or even dying right in front of him but he believes it’s for the “right” reasons (because the Voice said it had to happen, basically), it can sometimes look like he doesn’t care.
I’ve seen several theories regarding why “he would just stand there and watch” while Hudson and the other hostages in John’s Gate begged for mercy, ranging from “he gets a kick out of seeing people being tortured” (which I disagree with) to “he wanted to face up to what his little brother was capable of” (which is much more original and interesting), but my personal interpretation to his apparent emotionlessness is that, while he acknowledges their pain and hears their cries, he believes what they are going through is necessary. It’s like when he visits the Deputy while they are in one of Jacob’s cages and tells them, “I know you’re in pain (...) but you’re not the only one to be tested”. These people asking for help don’t need to be saved; they are being saved.
The way he sees things, they are only begging because they can’t see the truth yet. But he can. He knows. He too has been chosen and tested. To him, they simply don’t understand that this is all for the greater good and their own sake. “In the end, you will thank us”, he and his followers keep saying to the people they capture. They know their pain and that it’s an unpleasant feeling, but they’re also convinced it’s temporary and “necessary training” for the Collapse, to quote The Book of Joseph.
So yeah, I see Joseph as a well-meaning and empathetic person, but his faith and perception of reality can paradoxically make him appear cold, cruel, and insensitive to other people’s pain. His intentions are pure, but sometimes, what he does or orders/allows his followers to do seems like pure evil.
He really is the personification of “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” and that’s one of the reasons I think he’s so fascinating as a character.

Always an awfully heartbreaking experience, every time, for each region... and one day I just realized that I could stop doing missions and thus never liberate any region anymore, even if it means not seeing ever again the last cinematics with the Seeds and the end the game (+ few other secundary adjustments).
But gosh it's so good not to bawl my eyes out and not to feel a bit more agonized at every step taken towards the end of the Resistance progress bar anymore, it's so liberating!
Serious question
How do y’all feel when you get to the final confrontation with your favorite Herald?
I mean, I’m on my second playthrough and left Jacob as last AGAIN and I haven’t even done the first trial yet, but I already know I’m gonna sob once I see that cutscene again😭

Bystander Intervention Training
so, the US just attacked Iran, and that is fucking terrible. Something we all need to think about right now is how we can stop the harassment and violence against Muslims and Arabs in the US that got so much worse in the early 2000s from happening again to people now.
To that end, I wanted to share some resources on Bystander Intervention. One of the biggest things I learned from training like this is that there are many ways to intervene, and they don't all involve putting yourself in front of the person who may harm you or others. It's ok if you feel intimidated by that because there are more ways to help! And once you do the training, it might not be so scary.
Right to Be has Bystander trainings based on the 5Ds of Bystander Intervention (Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct). The trainings are free!! sign up here.
I took one of their trainings a few years ago (when the org was called Hollaback!) and it was really very good, they have trainings at multiple levels and focused on various topics. They also partner with other orgs to focus on specific issues (like anti-AAPI harassment and with CAIR Chicago for anti-Muslim harassment, etc.).
Here are a few more resources:
APA Bystander Intervention Tip Sheet
RAINN Practicing Bystander Intervention
I think I'll sign up for one as a refresher.
