Year 1, Day 78
Movie #139: Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Length: 105 minutes
Starring: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, and Dianne Wiest
Plot: An uncommonly gentle young man, who happens to have scissors for hands, falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl.
Review: I doubt I can say anything about this masterpiece that hasn’t already been said. This is by far my favorite Tim Burton movie and in my top three Johnny Depp films. It is a wonderful fairytale that is as magical now as it was the first time I saw it fifteen or so years ago. It’s one of those rare movies that has stood the test of time and deserves all the praise and acclaim it has received.
Edward Scissorhands will make you laugh (the waterbed scene, Edward attempting to eat a pea) and will make you cry. We can both laugh at and sympathize with this character, whose bizarre physical appearance causes him to stand out in the pastel, cookie cutter suburban world he is thrust into. I’d say this is Depp’s best performance because I couldn’t even see him on the screen - I saw Edward. He played him with a quiet intensity that made the viewer connect to this Frankenstein-like creature. He has a childlike innocence and bemusement that is endearing. I was never a huge Winona Ryder fan but I love the evolution her character goes through as she gets to see the human side of Edward, falling in love with him as the audience does.
Of course this movie is strange but it is certainly unique. Tim Burton uses beautiful cinematography, a gorgeous score by Danny Elfman and wonderful acting performances to tell a modern day fairytale that has long lasting appeal. It has a well deserved place in pop culture history and should be a mandatory watch for anyone who calls themselves a film buff.

The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.
