Lake Texoma
Lake Texoma
Lake Texoma is a 140 square mile outdoor paradise sandwiched on the border of Texas and Oklahoma.  The reservoir is one of the top 15 largest lakes in the United States. Lake Texoma is surrounded by many diverse cities filled with their own distinctive cultures.  The area surrounding Lake Texoma is a place like none other in the world.  Once you drop into the watershed, you almost feel as if you are in another world. People seem to care about one another, people take pride in their property and the lake, people seem to be at peace when at the lake.  Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and bring your children to experience the outdoors in its natural habitat.  Allow nature to inspire and teach your kids life lessons and make memories that will last a lifetime and beyond.

Lake Texoma was a destination for my family each summer.  The absolute best memories I have involve activities at Lake Texoma. The experiences I had around the lake and on the lake have had an impact in shaping the person I am.  While enjoying the outdoors, unknown to me, I was also learning life lessons that would stick with me to this day.  We were taught to clean the day’s catch and in turn learned life lessons regarding the circle of life and providing for our families. Many interactions with the wildlife surrounding Lake Texoma taught me about compassion for animals, people, and the environment.  While fishing, we learn the art of patience.  I found it very hard to sit still and wait for that bite, but when my pole bent over and I felt the fish pulling, the wait was more than worth it.
 History
The lake itself and the surrounding areas are rich in cultural history that is alluring to the younger mind as well as the more experienced minds.  The Red River and the Washita River were impounded in 1944.  At the time of impoundment, the Denison Dam was the largest earthen dam ever constructed in the United States.  While looking out from Denison Dam, water seems endless drifting off into the horizon.  On the opposite side of the dam there is a rich history surrounding the old hydroelectric turbines which were first put into services in 1945.  Walking through the area of the old hydroelectric plant give one an eerie sense of the age and amount of work that it took to run the power plant.  At the time of flooding the lake, the town of Aylesworth and Woodville were sent into a permanent watery grave.  Segments of these towns can be visible during times of low water.
 Hiking
Lake Texoma offers a wide diversification of terrain that will challenge all levels of hikers.  There are massive 100-foot-tall cliffs on the south end of the lake, while the west and north end of the lake offer hikers a level journey through densely populated wildlife sanctuaries.  Lake Texoma is home to many species of birds that are not seen in any parts of Oklahoma or Texas.  One of these such species, is the Bald Eagle.  Imagine your children’s eyes when they catch a glimpse at the majestic bald eagle.
 Camping
Lake Texoma offers endless camping opportunities for both RV campers and primitive campers.  There is something almost spiritual about spending the night under a blanket of stars in the enormous Lake Texoma sky.  Imagine being serenaded by the sounds of waves crashing the shoreline while you fall asleep dreaming about the outdoor activities you will experience the following day.  Lake Texoma offers camping sites at some of the most awe inspiring locations around the lake.  Explore a new campsite to find your new favorite area of the lake.

 Fishing
Lake Texoma offers fishing opportunities for the most avid angler all the way to kids wanting to wet a line for the very first time.  Due to the varied topography of Lake Texoma, the water clarity and depth changes from each part of the lake you traverse.  This allows for one of the most diversified fishery available in the Southern United States.  A quick review of any fisheries record book will reveal that Lake Texoma is home to the largest fish of many different species.  Whether you are looking to catch bluegill all day, hook into that 100 pound plus catfish, catch a wall-hanging largemouth, beautiful bronze back smallmouth, or get into the acres and acres of stripers, Lake Texoma has a guide especially for you.  Some of the absolute best guides in the industry call Lake Texoma home.  Lake Texoma is home to some species such as the paddle fish, alligator gar, and the snapping turtle.  These species home ranges have dwindled down and some only found only in the Red River System now.

In closing, Lake Texoma is a short get away from everyday life.  Lake Texoma has a spiritual aura about it that will make you and your kids feel like they are in an entirely different world.  The Texoma area will always have a special place in my heart and the memories I have experienced will be keep near my heart for life. Kids should experience nature at its finest to learn the important lessons Lake Texoma has to offer.  Take the short trip and explore some of the opportunities Lake Texoma has to offer such as camping, hiking, fishing, and even taking an adventure into the history of the lake.  Make some memories on Lake Texoma while the sun disappears into the crystal clear water.  Make a campfire while your bonds with your family glow brighter than that marshmallow resting in the flames.
