Twizzling ‘round an umbrella…

So, did everyone else know that the movie singing in the rain is about a faked romance pushed by corporate interests…??

I swear I tried to find out if anyone else has already posted about this... perhaps I’m not the most skilled at finding things on tumblr! Pls send me in the right direction if it's already been discussed!

For those who don’t know, the central character then goes on to find REAL LOVE and can’t help but sing (in the rain) about how happy < gay*> he is... ( *i hope we can all agree that if there is one thing we can safely say about our Al, it’s that he loves those layered meanings).

and the movie ends with this song about how the love birds think the other is a celestial body (lucky star).

and thanks so much to @lalaballa1977 for helping me think this through further! You’re a bloody genius! P.s. I might perish on this hill- I’m positive he purposeful says “gay” here… i know it doesn’t make gramatical sense ...I know it’s a common dialect thing to enunciate the hard g… .... but I don’t care!

I don't feel I need evidence, but if you want it, check out how perfectly he pronounces other often northern-ified words on this album… like "something", "thinking".

and, if you think that’s a stretch, then here is a snap… I was doodling umbrellas the other day, while thinking about this idea. I made each umbrella a different colour from the original pride flag, and it hit me that maybe, just maybe, Alex inserted the reference to umbrellas, being in love for real, and singing gay tunes, with some tenuous link to 🌈 pride.. … and then I remembered the first line to Perfect Sense… which has never felt resolved to me… but which feels much more settled to me as a nod to rainbow colours… and this idea only makes me love Sculptures more!

finally, i would never truly presume I know what’s going on in Al’s life, let alone what’s going on in his head. that said, I can’t escape the idea that he’s doing his best to tell his story in the only way that feels right to him, and regardless of the true meaning, i think it’s a beautiful thing.

it’s interesting cause he mentions guns or a variation of them three times throughout the ‘sias’ album:

the girl next to me saw me taking this photo and asked if i’d never been to the house of blues before, and i had to be like no i’ve been here, it’s just that eight years ago i saw this weird band here and the frontman started the show in that balcony in a bathrobe

so 309 comes from Miles's dream. but do we know why it's five four? did he explain those numbers?

not explicitly but he did say he always woke up from that dream at 3.55 so five to four! I’m guessing that’s it. and I love this SO much btw!!! that he took the relevant letters and numbers and made it into sort of a post code that would be the title for this song about this dream…the post code of a dream…. wow Alex was right Miles only has good ideas. I hope his dreams are nice and crispy now though

Sorry if this has been noted before but it just stood out to me. In this interview, (at 1.15) Alex describes himself crawling over the stage, “literally and figuratively…” We saw him crawling literally (hence the dirty knees) but the way he looks at Miles when he says “figuratively.” The word “crawling” means (according to dictionary.com) “behave obsequiously or ingratiatingly in the hope of gaining someone's favour” or “grovel to.” So, here Alex is confirming that he’s grovelling or apologising to Miles and sort of confirms that they did argue, as was previously thought from their body language in the set.

Also “crawl” links to Kingcrawler lyrics, plus “crawling back to you” but I haven’t time for all that now.
