Just so we're clear Peter fucked and killed Catherine's mother. Then, when Pugachev was leading an uprising against her and she was understandably worried for her reign and scared for her life, Peter stole her army to go take back Sweden for a fucking ego trip instead of leaving them around her to protect herself. But sure, Marial is the bad one. I will cheer so loud when he dies

Marial has her flaws, as does Catherine, as does everyone in the show. It’s kind of the reason why it’s a good show to watch.

However - Marial is justified in her hatred and anger for Peter. It is the entire reason that she got behind Catherine in the first place - she’s pragmatic remember, and when we first meet her she’s in a position where she needs to be to keep herself safe (bar the issue with the sneaking into her old apartments to see her dog - but I would do that in her position as well, the threat of a beating be damned). Marial has justifiable reason to hate him, from her own misfortune to how he’s treated Catherine.

And she’s right to be angry at Catherine too. Marial isn’t a perfect person, but as Marial’s character progressed, she had Catherine’s back right up until that pragmatic side of her kicks in - last episode of season 1 for example! And she’s usually right!

I was hoping for a far more explosive argument between the two of them, but what we got was beautiful in a way - it reminded me of some of my own friendship breakups where it wasn’t screaming matches, it was ‘so you pick your asshole boyfriend over me again, even when he’s hurt you but says he loves you so alls well again?’

Catherine and Marial didn’t have the best of friendships but it still hurts to see their friendship come to an end. I mean, it’s still the first episode, so I have to see how things play out.
