You can’t build an Empire with just a pair of hands
(Mythal, Rook | 534 Words | No CWs that I can think of.)
Summary: Mythal tells Rook about how the Titans' end came to fruition (and roasts Solas a bit in the process)
“Did that pitiful fresco reveal to you that the idea for a tool that sundered dreams was of Dirthamen?” Mythal says with disgust. “His ravens had witnessed the dwarves’ ritual for separating their brethren from the Stone when they committed a blood crime, and saw that the severed dwarves became tamer and no longer moved and talked in their sleep. He was the first to think that a similar process could be applied to the Titans themselves.
“And did Solas’ guilt and pride allow for credit for June? Theirs was the original design for my dagger, but they lacked enough knowledge of the way of the mind and the spirit to complete the task. It was only then, when we found no other resource, that I brought in Solas in our plan. For all he blames me, my first choice was never to risk the corruption of his wisdom.”
But you did it anyways, so what difference does the timing make? Rook thinks but doesn’t say. They’ve made it this far without angering the Titan-killer into a fight, they might as well finish what they started, get all the information they can from her, even if it means playing nice with someone that inspires so little sympathy in them. So they let her talk away.
“And Andruil killed the weaker Titan whose heart we used for the dagger’s core.” The false goddess continues. “And Sylaise devised the ritual site that would amplify the dagger’s power so that I could reach all the Titans in the land at the same time. And Elgar’nan, as the first among us,” she says those words like they are acid she is in a rush to spit out, “sanctioned every step of the process. He and Falon’din lead the troops that distracted the Titans long enough for me to use the weapon uninterrupted.
“And those troops were moved by faith. None were slaves yet, as we were still inventing that kind of loyalty. And yet, none but the Forbidden Ones thought to rebel. Every single soldier chose our command, because they believed we were the only path towards their own salvation. And that we were, because without us the Titans would have crushed them like the glorified leeches they thought us all to be.”
“So, what’s the moral here, All-Mother?” Rook finally intervenes. “My own wisdom’s too short to reach your point, I’m afraid.” See what I did there, ’short’ because I’m a dwarf… Maker, how am I still alive?
At that, Mythal smiles unkindly.
“The moral, Child of the Stone, is that we are never alone in our actions. To think that all the weight of the world is entirely in one’s own shoulders is a feat of self-delusion, and cowardice.”
“Taking responsibility is not cowardly.”
She laughs, and it sounds like bone cracking as it is burnt.
“Making yourself believe that your choices alone matter, thus you only need control yourself to control the whole world, that reveals a mighty weakness. A paralyzing fear of everything beyond your own mind.” And right there, for an instant, her eyes glimmer like a Stormrider’s before breathing a tempest upon you. “Do you feel that kind of fear yet, Rook?”

Some fun, lighthearted stuff from a recent DA panel interview (video below). Gareth David-Lloyd is always so delightful.
Gareth David-Lloyd Highlights
Fave VG ending – “My favourite is redeem. I’m going into the next game knowing everything possible, so I played Inquisition three times… and every single time, I was always friends with myself (Solas) or romanced. Last time I played it, I romanced Solas… so redeem Solas. Despite all his flaws and trickery, there’s a righteous, good soul in there somewhere, I think.”
His fave line – “I lay in dark and dreaming sleep…”
Inquisition got him back into gaming – it's his favourite DA game.
Upset he didn’t get to do mocap for VG. He went into the recording studio and had to watch a video of someone else doing Solas’ mocap and lines. They wanted him to do the lines in exactly the same way. For GDL, that wasn’t acting to him. Eventually they called him back in to record some lines the way he wanted – which meant they ended up having to redo the mocap to match his interpretation.
Fave character - Solas – “complex and such an asshole… is an anti-hero, anti-villain… so much fun playing those complex roles.”
Really enjoyed that a lot of Solas’ lines were written in verse.
Joseph Capp Highlights
This VG panel was the first time GDL and JC ever met.
Had a full bio sheet to learn about Elgar’nan.
Hasn’t played VG yet.
Fave line: “All the world will soon share the peace and comfort of my reign.”
This was Joseph’s first fan event.
Fave character is Lucanis, based on cutscenes (since he hasn’t played it).
Elven language – they gave him free rein on how to pronounce the elven words.
Binged on gaming – played Origins and Inquisition simultaneously. Also binged a few community content creators’ podcasts and videos.
A lot of Elgar’nan’s material were rewritten close to release, and he had to go back in to re-record lines.

Wait
Does Lancelot exist in the Dragon Age Universe? Because if not, Ser Pounce-A-Lot isn’t a pun name to Anders.
He just looked at that cat and thought
“Man he sure do pounce a lot”
And decided not only was that a sensible cat name, but that cat is clearly a Sir.
