Harrowing: someone in your Fandom just made an innocuous and harmless post that nonetheless betrays a deep misunderstanding of the character and the character's narrative purpose and you just have to sit there and let them be wrong lest you be an asshole

Imagine your OTP/3+ are West Virginia coal miners. They work side by side day by day, until one day the main shaft caves in. They catch each other’s eyes just as the lantern light gutters out and leaves them in darkness. They die holding hands, choking on the afterdamp (poisonous gases) of the explosion.
(Bonus: When they die, they catch a glance of their next life together)
Inspired by verse one of Vienna Teng's In Another Life.

I see a lot of "you go girl!" quotations of Virginia Woolf insulting 'Ulysses' on here.
I cannot and will not let it go unmentioned that Woolf's queerness and womanness does not erase the fact she was upper class and English, and that her description of Joyce and his writing is dripping in colonial and class contempt:
An illiterate, underbred book it seems to me: the book of a self-taught working man, & we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, & ultimately nauseating.
Now. This was written likely within a year of Ireland gaining partial independence from British colonial rule. 'Ulysses' was published on Feb 2nd, 1922, less than a month after the British administration left Dublin. This after several years of guerilla war.
This is not the case of a girlboss gay icon sticking it to a man. This is a person from a colonialist perspective calling the work of a person who came from a colonial underclass "underbred" and "illiterate".
She also assumes that James Joyce was uneducated. Joyce was culturally middle class (though he and his family had bouts of serious poverty) and went to the best private schools in Dublin available to a Catholic at the time and on to university. But she calls him "self taught". Perhaps because he was Irish. Or perhaps because an Irish education didn't count.
In the social dynamics of the time, Woolf was engaging in something akin to (not the same as, i am not saying it is the same, simply akin to) racist dog-whistling. Honestly if a posh English person called something an Irish person wrote "underbred" or "illiterate" today, it would still be considered unacceptable and apologies would be demanded, but in the early 1920s it was pretty fucking disgusting. She used eugenicist language and allusions lack of education as a cudgel with which to bash somebody she deemed culturally inferior to herself, after centuries of her culture suppressing his.
I understand that not everybody understands the existence of this dynamic. But now you do.
