Apple Watch and the new MacBook
Is it just me that was left disappointed with Apple's announcements yesterday, or are Apple losing their shine?
Let's start with the Apple Watch; whilst some of the apps look very cool and bring a whole new way in which we can interact (I'm thinking about Maps and Messages), I'm left disappointed by the product.
First off is the price - the cheapest version is £299, going all the way up to an eye-watering £13,500! And to top it off, the difference between some models is just the watchstrap, which Apple seem to feel it's acceptable to add up to an additional £340 to the price - crazy and outrageously expensive.
Price notwithstanding, the battery life of an Apple Watch is just 18 hours! It's bad enough phones can't go a day without being charged and now watches too!
Finally I have to wonder what the shelf life of the Apple Watch will be. The original iPad only got updated with iOS for two years for example, and the battery won't last forever, so you could end up with a device the costs you £13,500 and is obsolete within 2 years. I think within the next few years wearables will become more and more common, and as technology improves so will the devices, but in the meantime I would advise waiting until at least version 2 of the Apple Watch.
Now let's move on to the new MacBook. This is a nice looking laptop, light and thin with a Retina display.
However on the downside, it has only a single port (USB-C) that's also used for charging - this makes it impossible to use the port when being charged for anything else without the use of extra dongles. At least 2 USB-C ports would have been nice.
To make the MacBook fanless, Apple had to use Intel's new Core M processor. The negative of this is that it is not as powerful as Intel's i5 and i& processors, and only time will tell if the Core M is adequate for OSX.
Like the Apple Watch, the MacBook has been priced way too high in my opinion; an 11" MacBook Air is more powerful and cheaper, although slightly heavier - a small price to pay for savings of a few hundred pounds.
Apple devices have always carried a premium however I think with these new devices the premium is just too high for what is on offer.

The more open Microsoft continues. Great news for asm.js and the new Spartan browser.

Raspberry Pi 2 also compatible with Windows 10 and Universal Apps. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these.

The more I read about HoloLens the more I want one! The possibilities seem endless. Who will need desktop monitors when you can have as many virtual monitors as you want?

Windows 10 Thoughts
After my predictions yesterday how well did I do?
I was totally wrong on pricing; I did not expect it to be free and I certainly did not expect it to be free for Windows 7 users. This is a great tactic from Microsoft and hopefully get adoption rates higher than Windows 8 ever achieved.
Spartan was announced and the Cortana integration looks good, especially the clipping functionality.
No release date was announced, but I still expect it to be around October.
Gaming featured heavily and as I predicted, streaming to Windows from Xbox One was shown. This is a feature I'm particularly looking forward to.
The next version of Office was shown and how it works across devices.
Continuum was shown again; this feature looks good and should help improve the UI for desktop and touch users.
Windows Phone 10, which looks a nice improvement over Windows Phone 8 and shows Microsoft's "One OS" for all devices.
As I predicted, no talk about SDK's was announced and no talk of other operating systems like iOS or Android. I did predict that no new hardware would be announced but I was wrong! HoloLens was revealed - think Google Glasses but better. Basically it's augmented reality with holograms - very, very cool. Microsoft also said it will be available in the same timeframe as Windows 10 - so hopefully this year!
All in all, Windows 10 is looking like a great update to Windows 8, and the next preview update is available next week!

Windows 10 Predictions
Tomorrow at 9am Pacific (5pm GMT) further details about Windows 10 are announced.
Below are a few of my predictions:
Pricing, the exact pricing might not be revealed tomorrow but Microsoft will make it be known that it will be a competitive price (I doubt free) but cheaper in comparison to previous Windows releases. There might be talk of a subscription based licence as well (think Office 365). 7/10 (Chance of announcement)
New web browser - Spartan, this has already been rumoured and leaked screenshot have appeared on the web. 10/10
A release date, I predict sometime around October (just like Windows 7 and 8). 8/10
PC gaming, Phil Spencer (head of Xbox and Microsoft Studios) has already announced he will be there. I predict something linking to the Xbox One, maybe streaming from Xbox One to PC similar to Steam In-Home Streaming along with the power of DirectX 12. 6/10
More information on the next version of Office and OneDrive. 8/10
More details on Continuum. 10/10
Windows Phone 10 and how it integrates with Window 10. 9/10
And here’s a few things I don’t think will be announced.
Any new hardware, i.e. Surface 4 or Surface Mini, these will be announced closer to the actual Windows 10 release.
Any information on the Windows 10 SDK’s, this will be announced at the Microsoft Build Conference in April/May.
Even though Microsoft have recently release a spate of iOS and Android apps, tomorrow will be a Windows only affair.
