Caden tightened his hand around Laney’s waist and squeezed her side lovingly as they watched her father walk out of the main reception. Caden was happy that Laney finally got to meet her father, now she had someone to look forward to meeting every month.
He registered in his brain that Laney’s dad seemed like a nice enough person. “Come on babe” he said and pulled his girlfriend away from the main reception once her father’s figure had vanished into the mass of other people leaving the asylum. Caden knew his parent’s wouldn’t come and he didn’t really seem to care. He felt like their presence would only make his current situation worse.
Caden pulled himself out of his thoughts and smiled over at his girlfriend who still looked quite sad. He pulled her even closer to his body and kissed her forehead, “Cheer up Laney, it isn’t that bad. Look on the bright side, you got your dad back” Caden said optimistically then grinned at her.
Laney followed Caden out of the lobby. She was pulled in closer and she smiled up at her boyfriend. Caden kissed Laney on the forehead, like he usually did, she smiled at him again and kissed him on his lips. "Thank you.. for coming with me.." she said after the kiss. She squeezed his hand and smiled brightly. She was so happy to have been reunited with her father. It still felt like a dream. And not only had she seen him again, he had met her boyfriend. She couldn't wait until the next visitation day and she couldn't wait to talk to him on the phone and through letters. She was excited to catch up completely  with her father, but more importantly, she was relieved that he didn't blame her for her sisters death.
Long Time No See || Laney & Caden
A short smile settled on Caden’s face after the departing hug Laney’s father gave him. “I will, sir” he mumbled in response, almost certain neither Laney or her dad heard him.

Laney released Caden's hand, giving him a soft smile before practically attacking her father with a hug. She buried her head in his chest. She wasn't sure what to say and she couldn't help the tears that were falling down her cheeks. She pulled away finally and she quickly wiped her tears. Any resentment or anger towards her father was now gone. Any person from the outside view would find it ridiculous that she was no longer upset with her father.. 'How could she trust someone who left her for 16 years.' Well, they clearly didn't know just how much of a royal bitch Laney's mother was.
Laney stepped away, allowing her father to shake hands with her boyfriend. Laney glanced at Caden, letting her eyes say 'lighten up a bit.' She knew he was struggling with withdrawal, but she didn't want her father to not like Caden. Caden was the love of her life, and now that her father was in her life, she wanted them to get along.
Laney smiled and sighed. But all good things must come to an end. A nurse walked up to them, informing them that visiting was now over. Laney's bright smile turned into a frown as she hugged her father goodbye. She had just been reunited and now he had to leave. Laney squeezed her father, he patted her back and whispered in her ear. "Let go, baby girl.. It's okay.. I'll keep in touch.. I promise.. I'll call and write.. and I'll come for every visitation day.. okay?" A nurse walked over to them, she tried to pull Laney off of him, but that made Laney squeeze tighter. "No. I don't want to let go.." she said. She didn't move until Caden helped pull her off. They all reassured her that it would be fine, that she would see him again.
"It was nice meeting you, son." Laney's father said to Caden, pulling him into a hug. "Treat her right, okay.. " he murmured in Caden's ear. He gave Laney a kiss on the cheek and one last hug.
Now Laney clung to Caden as she watched her father walk out the door.
Long Time No See || Laney & Caden
Caden listened attentively to their conversation but he didn’t make a comment. No matter how much he wanted to, he didn’t. Instead he let go of Laney’s hand when she requested it with that same tight smile on his face.
After their hug, the older man looked over at Caden expectantly but Caden just stared back at him for a minute before Caden actually removed his hands from his pocket and held it out for the man to shake.
“Caden,” he introduced himself in a monotone voice which could easily be processed as Caden not really caring for what was going on. He looked over at Laney then his gaze flickered back to the man after the hand shake, he noticed how much Laney looked like her dad and his fake smile was soon replaced with a softer one which only lasted for a few seconds before going back to it’s old hard gaze.
Caden had never been good with family and this situation was an example of how he reacted to parents, he didn’t really care for their approval. He saw parents as no one special and he didn’t really need to impress them, he had always felt like that about them.

Laney shook her head. "You left me and Athena.. When we were three.." Laney felt tears in her eyes. "I can understand you wanting to leave mom.. But you left us.. not even bothering to say good bye.." Laney stared into the man's dark eyes, much like her own. "I needed you.. " she said in a much softer tone, barely audible. "I needed you and you weren't there.. " she added, looking down.
Her father was clearly confused. He tilted Laney's chin up. "Delaney, baby.. What are you talking about.. I left a note that night.. And I sent so many letters.. And you never replied. I tried so many times to meet up with you.. I talked about it in the letters.. But you never replied.."
Now it was Laney's turn to be confused. "Wh-what letters.. We never got any letters.."
"But I sent them.. And I tried calling.. but the phones were disconnected. And I had to find out from the papers that your sister had .. " Laney looked away, scooching as close to Caden as she possibly could. Laney's father kept looking at Caden, he must've figured that he was Laney's boyfriend, but he didn't say anything about it. His face softened as he turned back to Laney. "Your grandmother is the one who got a hold of me.. She knew she was dying.. And she wanted me to know what happened and where you were.." he put his hand on her shoulder and smiled softly. "I don't blame you.."
Laney looked up at Caden as if to ask if it was alright to let go of his hand and to hug the father she hadn't seen in years.
Long Time No See || Laney & Caden
He noticed how nervous Laney was by how hard she was gripping into his hands but he didn’t mind, instead he squeezed her hand back  reassuringly once they finally arrived at the room. Caden followed behind Laney, not saying much but his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. If it was Laney’s mother wanting to visit he wasn’t sure what his reaction would be like but he hoped he wouldn’t have an outburst in front of her. He watched Laney expectantly as she looked around the open and slightly room for anyone familiar.
Caden watched the scene unfolding in front of him then blinked slightly confused when the much older male confirmed he was Laney’s father. He didn’t even bother to make his hard stares unnoticeable but instead he bite his lips forcing himself not to say anything rude to the man he knew abandoned his girlfriend over a one and a half decades ago. He forced a tight smile onto his face once the man looked at him then he looked away again holding back the urge to say anything horrible like he knew he was capable of.

Laney couldn't help the smile that grew on her lips, that had just held a frown. "Thank you." she said with a growing smile. She was relieved that they were no longer arguing. She gave his hand a tight squeezed as they walked to the lobby. Her heart quickened with each step they took. The lobby was getting closer and her breaths were getting shorter. She was not ready to see her mother. They reached the lobby at last and Laney squeezed Caden's hand tighter. She looked ahead, looking for her mother's familiar face, or any familiar face. She saw nobody she recognized. She was just about to say something when she heard a voice behind her call our her name. "Laney?" Laney froze in place, before slowly turning around. Her mouth hung open and her face held a confused expression. She stared at the man the voice belonged to. She didn't recognize him, but at the same time.. she did. He had such a familiarity to him. She didn't say anything, she just looked him up and down. He walked closer to them, a smile, similar to her own on his face. The man reached Laney and Caden, he shook his head, smiling. "It is you." he stated. Laney cleared her throat, "Um.. Wh-who are you?" she questioned. The mans smile faltered, "Of course  you don't remember me.." The man's voice sounded so familiar, and he looked so familiar, but Laney couldn't quite put her finger on it. She looked at Caden, who also seemed confused. Laney turned back to the man, her confused expression slowly turning into a shocked one. It couldn't be. She felt goosebumps up and down her body, her mouth hung open and she shook her head slightly. "It's your father.. I woudln't expect you to recognize me.."  he stated, confirming Laney's thoughts. She hadn't seen her father in 16 years.
Long Time No See || Laney & Caden
Caden watched Laney closely and his gaze never left her when the possibly female nurse had come inside the room. Caden sighed and stood up from his sitting position and stretched momentarily. Caden had never been the one to get into arguments or fights especially with someone like Laney but with the bipolar mood withdrawal gave him, he couldn’t help it. “Yeah, I’ll come with you” he said in a low voice. He looked over at her and smiled reassuringly at her.
He knew why she seemed worried and he remembered clearly what happened last time her mom had come to visit. Laney was in tears and he honestly hated the sight of her crying. Once they had started making their way to the main reception. Caden quickly wiped away Laney’s lingering tears then kissed her on the forehead softly. “I’m sorry, about earlier” he whispered then interlocked their fingers as they continued walking. The one thing about their short fights were how quickly they were resolved and this was another example of it.
