i think what really sets me off is that poetry, literature, and calligraphy were not only masculine pastimes to have (+ the scholar class was male-only, famously), nie huaisang focusing so much on them is reminiscent of chinese dynastic succession struggles. in the past, unambitious siblings would throw themselves into the arts, poetry, music, etc, while eschewing politics and power plays so their siblings who DID have ambitions for the throne wouldnt kill them. having martial and military power made you a threat, and with how the cultivation world at the time looked geopolitically, it was crucial for him not to attract too much attention (esp with what type of cultivation qinghe nie is known for). it's such a small detail but makes perfect sense, especially taking into account how he is meant to be a frivolous second young master and not the heir like his brother (where such a sentiment would be much more frowned upon). there is sm nuance to his character but western fans see his fans and how he has no idea how to pick up a sword and go "ok hes the effeminate limp wristed artist lol"

i think that not only were jin guangyao and jiang cheng neutral-to-positive allies, i think there's a very decent chance that if he had become aware of the situation before jin ling was ever directly threatened (putting himself in danger in the nie tomb aside), jiang cheng would have helped jin guangyao cover up his crimes because a stable, peaceful jin sect is ultimately a much, much safer outcome for jin ling

Chenqing (and Jiang Cheng) based off of John Singer Sargent’s Madam Paul Escudier (Louise Lefrvre). Same universe as Sect Leader J since I reused the table. I actually saw the original in person a while ago but only recently found it again, and really wanted to make a piece inspired by it.
This piece is dark like a poorly lit gritty movie so I suggest saving this to view when brightness is high and night shift is off on your device!
And now for some close-ups on JC and Chenqing:

I don’t usually spend much time on the underpainting but since this piece is very much centered on the values rather than color I really wanted to get that all sorted. So the bonus today is the underpainting!

I firmly believe that Jin Guangyao and Jiang Cheng have no beef with each other for the majority of the timeskip. They both have traits that the other values in allies, if not necessarily in friends:
Jin Guangyao is extremely appropriate, considerate, hardworking, and never makes social situations worse than they have to be. I don't think Jiang Cheng would care that he has schemes or a fake smile because that's just everyone in the political world; it's not as if he has any delusions that the other high-ranking gentry are being fully honest and sincere with him either. On the contrary, he would pretty much respect the work ethic and understand that sometimes you have to do shit to get your dad to like you even when you know it won't work. In short, Jin Guangyao is unlikely to do anything to piss Jiang Cheng off, and at least is very kind to Jin Ling.
On the other side, Jiang Cheng is a man who is just not very dangerous if you understand him. You can say he's a man with a predictable temper, or you can call him easy to manipulate; either way, this works in Jin Guangyao's favour. Jiang Cheng is aware of Jin Guangyao's various social disadvantages, but is too pragmatic to try and exploit them, and is too single-issue to be a significant political opponent. While he does come from privilege, his personal life is so tragic that I don't think Jin Guangyao would feel moved to envy or resent him for his social standing, and at the same time he's a sect leader who actually does work instead of foisting it off on his servants or onto Jin Guangyao himself. In short, Jiang Cheng does not pose a threat to Jin Guangyao, and at least is very kind to Jin Ling.
Does this make them besties? That depends on how deep I am in the Chengyao sauce on any given day, but for sure they are not enemies up until the shit has hit the fan post-timeskip.

I'm super out of it but hopefully I can word this well...
Idk I just feel like tumblr danmei is heavily dominated by mxtx readers who haven't read much else (I'm not judging, you do you) and I got curious if that was true.

Can't decide which is funnier:
Xie Lian trying to report Ling Wen stealing the Brocade Immortal TO Ling Wen.
OR
Ling Wen actually taking the time to respond.

Actor for Lan Wangji does a very good job conveying his inner life considering he has had I believe less than 100 words of dialogue, as opposed to Wei Wuxian who in seven episodes has spoken more than you might think physically possible
