Mjolnir Pendants and Life After Hate
Mjolnir Pendants and Life After Hate
On January 6th, 2021 several Heathen symbols were front and center during the siege on the US Capitol. I watched my inclusive and largely LGBTQ Heathen (and Heathen adjacent) community become distressed that, once again, our symbols were being associated with hate and bigotry. Lea wrote a pretty great argument for defending our symbols, and that along with the conversations I saw online made me…

Making Rings When I Have No Spoons
Making Rings When I Have No Spoons
Originally posted to the Lapidify Ko-Fi Account on 12/15/2020. One of the hardest things for me to tackle as an artist can sometimes, weirdly, be making art. Some days I’m struggling with a pain flare up and it makes sitting at the bench difficult, and other times I might have a bad mental health day no spoons to approach an elaborate, time consuming piece. And sometimes I’m totally fine, but…

Fired Figments Collaboration
While lurking in the 2020 Faire Relief Facebook group, I came across Fired Figments (and immediately bought a jug for use at faire when things are less pandemic-y). Stephanie’s work was even more beautiful in person, so I reached out to her to see if she could help me up my bottle-pendant game. Oh my goodness, did she ever:

Fordite, also known as Detroit agate, is old automobile paint which has hardened sufficiently to be cut and polished. It was formed from the built up of layers of enamel paint slag on tracks and skids on which cars were hand spray-painted (a now automated process), which have been baked numerous times.

A PUDDINGSTONE ‘BASKET-WEAVE’ SNUFF BOTTLE QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
Sotheby’s - As far as we know, no other example of a basket-weave design puddingstone is known. Presumably because the natural markings in the stone were so evocative that in most cases no further decoration was felt necessary to augment the material and the form. The pebble-inclusions also play no obvious role in the symbolism of a basket, nor in the appearance of such woven protective coating for oil and other liquid containers, which were vulnerable to damage if unprotected.

Puddingstone snuff bottle
China 18th to 19th C.
The green matrix of this bottle is very unusual. Puddingstone is the general term for a conglomerate of sedimentary flint pebbles in a matrix of chert - both part of the large quartz family.

Sketch Tuesday - Citrine
Citrine is this week’s gemstone! The aim of these gemstone pieces is to use a brush I’ve rarely used and see how much economy I can get out of it.
I’m torn on keeping this brush. This brush was labeled “dry oil”, which was really meant for highlights and texture flourishes at the end. Using this brush to paint from scratch was a bad idea. The pressure sensitivity on it was so light and paint barely came out of each stroke, which makes sense given its nature. I wound up painting with this brush on 100% opacity and removed all its settings so I could just fill in color.
In the end I had to rely on the default round brush to make up for this brush’s weaknesses. It was a good learning experience though - I might try this brush out as a highlight for other Sketch Tuesdays instead.
