the reason Tolkien pulls off “magic is leaving the world” without it being depressing or disappointing is that the whole story is about how this loss is sad, yes, but also right for the time, and moreover that the magic—the elves, the dragons, the dark lords with magic rings and returned kings with legendary swords—were never the important thing. “Returned king with legendary sword” is literally a ploy the heroes use to hide the real hero, Frodo Baggins of the Shire. The end of the story isn’t the ship leaving for the West, it’s Sam coming home to Bag End. The wonderful thing in Middle Earth isn’t what is lost, it’s what remains, what is saved.

I have to gush over Secret Crush on You. I know it gets hate on various platforms and gosh did I have a hard time going through the first episode but then I carried on and I ADORE IT!!!
I understand and appreciate what they want to tell with the story. Was I taken aback by the whole obsessive/stalker Storyline yes and omg Toh's heavy breathing takes me out a lot and knowing that they made his character this way and knowing that he can act and was in Why R U makes it even harder because there are scenes when you know what could have been with his character but I digress.
But yes, Toh is a stalker and the second hand embarrassment makes it hard to watch for me but think about that storyline what you want because it weirdly works for Toh and Nuer (and I am suprised about it as everyone else lol). They deserve each other in their obsession about each other and they are a special kind of freaky and gosh the definition for freaky in their context needs a new level because I can't define it XD
But SCOY feels more like a queer show than a lot of Thai BLs (and let's be honest most of them fall under a subcategory of straight romance) and I enjoy it so much!
This is a show for and about femme gays and it's damn time that they are the ones getting the hot perfect campus stars. They have for too long be the joke in BL's. AND they are getting not only the hot perfect campus stars but those campus stars are IN LOVE WITH THEM! ARE CERTIFIED SIMPS AND I EAT THAT SHIT UP YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!!
The talk about bodyimage and Jao's struggle with it = CHEFS KISS!!!
The talk about sexual preferences and Nuea's confidence in his sexuality and his experience with women and men = CHEFS KISS
Daisy is allowed to be flirty and loud and sexual active = CHEFS KISS! He serves looks! He reminds me of my first queer friend in secondary school one of the loudest, nicest, warmest person with a gossip streak a mile wide who had so much influence on my own journey that I cannot not love Daisy with my whole heart.
I understand that this show isn't for everyone, it sure does have flaws and especially Toh's and Nuea's story is a lot (but again it is so weird how it works for them!) but this show pierced my heart in an unexpected way and I adore it!
Again, it gives me a queer vibe that is so comfortable it makes me warm and happy inside.
And maybe when you talk about stereotypes in BL's and how it's great that they sometimes cast actors that don't fit in that stereotype and you are relieved that that also often unveiles your internalized homophobia about how gays have to be or how you want your fictional gays to look and behave because the complain about Toh, Daisy and Jao being too gay, flamboyant and femme enrages me!
This series also shows how much Saint knows the market and what he needs to do to get this kind of story out and no the international market isn't important to Thai BL productions, it is always about the domestic market and the sponsorships you can gain there. He introduces a lesbian couple and people want more and now he will give it to them with three wlw couples in his new production GAP the series.
And this isn't really about how I want others to watch this show too, people have to decide for their own but that I love this show, I really truly love it.

This. So much THIS.
Honestly the worst part about Lian refusing to tell Kuea he cares is that Kuea is set up to feel like his world is ending while Lian feels like his world is just beginning and while we know it's going to end well Kuea has no idea that this isn't the end of his freedom. Kuea is giving up so much through the episode and he's so worried and so scared and Lian just doesn't understand that Kuea isn't just scared of not having his love but is scared of losing literally everything he has that makes him happy. He's fully prepared to lose his motorcycle, his music, his editing, his performing, maybe even his new major. What does he have when he's with Lian except the lie of who he isn't?

Imagine this being the last shot of them you’ll ever see.
That’s so cruel.
Edited:
I’m pinning this forever in my page. There’s more people watching this show now that it’s on netflix and I see so many people having their hearts broken for what Neftlix did. People should know there’s another episode wherein they show the true ending.
Click below for heart surgery: AKA the true ending

Please do share when you see other watchers of this show lamenting. They do not deserve it.

a cinematic reading of all the homoerotic tension of ep 6
a video essay by DiskDreamer, titled “the most hidden secrets”. Link. As also recommended by AvenueX in her livestream.
(for preface and all other posts in this WOH-meta series, click here)
Diskdreamer is a high quality video essay channel on Blibili. He works in cinema and claims to read more than 10000 words worth of script every day. His video essays are often tongue-in-cheek.
Tumblr media
What exactly is the most immortalised moment of Word of Honor? Is it Wen Kexing fanning beneath the moonlight? Is it Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu enjoying the sunlight in the midst of a busy market? The heartbreak of the red wedding? The double cultivation between a white-haired Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu? Each person would have their own answer. But there is one particular sequence that most overlook. Even though it was much discussed, it still has been greatly underestimated.
Yet this episode can be seen as the new standard for ‘bromance’ dramas. A classic, a masterclass that will continue to be discussed even in ten years time. That is. Episode 6.
Tumblr media
Why episode 6? Compared to the aforementioned moments, the story of episode 6 is more veiled, more hidden. Yet the actual message conveyed is more bold. The director has used classic cinematic language and coded references to complete the most marvelous Chinese BL version of a one night stand. What looks ordinary and plain is fact hiding an entire episode of sexual tension.
This video essay will explore why this episode ought to be immortalised.
