You have it all backwards. I’m not surprised; are you? Have you been paying attention? I don’t think you have.
It’s time to start paying attention now, Conway. Look closely at the television.

This is not good for you, my friend. You’re in quite deep, from my back-of-the-envelope estimations. Well, we have that in common, I suppose. All of us.

Vito Acconci, Rubbing Piece, (1970)
Acconci’s performance took place at Max’s of Kansas City Restaurant in NYC as part of a program of live performances by ten artists in the middle of restaurant activity.
“I sit alone at a booth in the restaurant: My left sleeve is rolled up, my left forearm lies stretched out on the table - with my right hand, I rub my left forearm, steadily, quickly, for one hour without stopping – my skin turns red , gradually I develop a sore.”

Vito Acconci, Seedbed, 1972
In this piece, Acconci sat underneath the gallery floorboards and masturbated while making erotic noises into a microphone that were then broadcasted through speakers into the gallery space as patrons walked on the floor above him. There’s more I could say about this piece, but I’ll just let y'all reflect on that for a bit.

Vito Acconci, Drifts, (November 1970)
I. Rolling toward the waves as the waves roll toward me; rolling away fro the waves as the waves roll away from me.
II. Lying on the beach in one position, as the waves come up in varying positions around me.
III. Using my wet body: shifting around on the sand , letting the sand cling to my body.

sitting in front of a camera, acconci performed a series of contorted poses and bit into his arms, legs and shoulders, resulting in impressions of his teeth left on his skin. he then covered these marks with printers ink and used them to stamp various surfaces, illustrating the bodies attack on itself while also criticizing the social institutions of art and the economy.
