Surprise Red Dwarf doodles!
Started rewatching the show after catching reruns on TV over the holidays, and it became exactly the obsession I needed.

There is so much potential when it comes to in-universe social media/online interactions for Red Dwarf
JMC has the most obnoxious internet presence, trying to present themselves as a friendly brand. It has a Tik Tok account that interns are forced to make comedic content for and it gets into fake internet drama with Diva Droid as a publicity stunt. Some people try to critique how this corporation associated with the military industrial complex is trying to personify itself but are drowned out by others who think it's only funny or cringey and isn't that deep
An aspect of media discourse are people calling new movies and TV shows "woke" or "pandering" because they included holograms as characters. Some pieces of media will try to virtue signal by claiming to have hologram representation when in reality the character is alive for most of the runtime until the last five minutes when they are brought back as a hologram and those scenes can be cut/censored before being released to more conservative colonies like Io. There's debate whether living people can play holograms or whether that's problematic
As per this post, Rimmer and Lister would both seperately and unknowingly post to r/AITA about each other and once people connected the dots, they comment (among ones saying they are both the asshole and that they need help) "Why are you both still sharing a room together? Can't you get a transfer? You should move out" and both of them would respond with something like "no why would I do that" and these responses get downvoted to hell. Eventually they're both banned from the subreddit (not a new experience for Rimmer who has been banned from several). This becomes part of Rimmer's internet lore which gains notoriety. When making a video about it some YouTuber ends up stumbling upon information about Red Dwarf and JMC's unethical practices (such as the inclusion of whole prisons on their vessels) and ends up getting harassed by the company just like that one guy IRL who went down the rabbit hole of a shady politician which led to his house getting firebombed

So like Rimmer sometimes needs to have his battery charged when they're separated from the ship. Do they have to plug him in. Does he charge off a USB-C cable or what
#you have to change him like a camera battery there is a doc you put the bee in#he refuses to disappear during it so he’s stuck basically sitting on it for hours#it’s very funny

You ever think about the societies they lost? Not just The Cats (who’s empire must be scattered across the ship if they ever cared to look) but stuffy Io and sleazy Mimas and the universities of Saturn and Pluto and Liverpool. The JMC put bars and discos on their ship for recreation because that’s how people had fun in their own time, but they painted them all military grey and sucked half the life out of them. Rimmer’s toy soldiers aren’t just lumps of wood, they’re relics of a bygone era when such things were fashionable and they were passed down through the ages until they meant next to nothing anymore, but the people who first carved them would have been filling mass orders. Mass orders don’t happen without masses of people to sell them to. So do you think Lister wonders what happened to each individual in the crowd when he watches Zero G Football, or is it enough for him to know that they all live the game as much as does, and as much as no one ever will again? Do you think Cat ever gets tired of explaining old Cat sayings that were once common knowledge among his people? Do you think Kryten’s guilt chip ever acts up when he has to delete yet another file from the Nova 5? Do you think Rimmer has ever tried to understand that the soldiers in his war stories had to leave their families behind to trade guts for glory, just how many families had to be abandoned to make all that blood possible?
The crew of the Red Dwarf may have gone out in a puff of radiation, but the human race had three million years to wither and die. New technologies, new colonies, new religions, new wars, new cities, new epochs. Hundreds of thousands of years of history that the last human in the universe will never understand, because he’s still pining for Liverpool in the twenty second century, and for whatever he imagined Fiji to be. They lost Kochanski, Petersen, Chen, Todhunter, Hollister, McGruder, Frankenstein, so many Rimmers, their crew, entire planets’ worth of people and they talk about it like it’s all so distant. Just the background noise of their daily lives. Not a tragedy that keeps happening to them again and again and again every time they find something else they missed, something they misplaced. So the Boyz from the Dwarf pass the time on their way back to Earth by trailing after any life signs they can find, so they might grow their ranks and maybe find themselves a little less lonely and a little less bored. Because the society they’ve built for the four of them is them just playing pretend, scraping together what they can remember of where they came from, trying to feel a little less lost.

I wish we had gotten to seen a little bit of the 3 days the Boys from the Dwarf spent raising Jim and Bexley. Poor Lister wanted so bad to be a Dad, and he got to do it for approximately 72 hours. At least he got to experience the full breadth of raising a child until adulthood in those 72 hours.
If the twins were 18 after 3 days, it stands to reason they aged about 6 years a day.
Here’s some scribbles from Day 1.

while watchin films i attempted the red dwarf christmas idea kinda based off this post http://thatdoodlebug.tumblr.com/post/105893077589/i-sometimes-wish-there-was-a-red-dwarf-christmas and of course full cred to blackscarabfilmz who mentioned that lister would be watching it’s a wonderful life (or at least attempting to) which makes perfect sense by book logic (and just by lister logic generally) i was gonna put kryten in there but he’s taking the photo i just decided so there
lister’s putting a leopard lager can on top of the tree somehow
