There is something almost mythological about walking around with a basket braced on your hip. It feels like such an ancient posture. I pull laundry out of the dry and walk with it to the bedroom and suddenly I'm a woman in the south of France on a warm spring day bringing linens in from drying, pushing a wisp of hair out of my eyes with my free hand and glancing around to check on the children. I'm an apprentice in ancient Egypt bringing my master's tools back from the quarry. I'm a boy in Doggerland with a basket of stones picked from the field, taking them to be added to the wall demarking the boundaries of lands that will sink beneath the waves. Humans have been doing this since the basket was first created and it's a little piece of our past that, maybe, brings a touch of mysticism to a household chore
