Laurette's face fell a fraction. "Oh... well, I was just hoping that I could be in and out..."
The truth was, Laurette felt something for Monsieur Bones. No, not like that! He just felt vaguely familiar in an off way. She didn't know if maybe they'd known each other in a past life or if fate pulled her to him to help him in this one. But Laurette felt a force and she wanted to learn more about Bones.
This project was merely a foot in the door to do that.
"I promise, it won't take too long or disrupt your work!" She pleaded.

Laurette was no stranger to people not wanting to see her, but this time felt a bit odd. As far as she knew, she hadn't scorned Mr. Bones at all. Maybe he felt some type of way about her acting in the play or... she didn't know, but she wouldn't let it dampen her outer demeanor. Laurette never did.
"Well. I'm a dual major, business and Magick-Mundus relations, so this is kinda a big deal to me! I am trying to write a paper on how ghosts, revenants, and the general after-life residents effect businesses. The Hauntley Inn is one of the local businesses that boasts its spectral guests, and I just wondered if you had some time to discuss the past, present, and future of the Inn along with the ghosts that live here and how they effect the marketing and success of the business!" She said it all in practically one breath.
Still, she continued, "I am a sorceress, also. I am hoping to open my own psychic business one day, so this really affects my future as well. Communing with the departed is a service that a lot of people look for, especially in places like Swynlake."

She had only met him briefly over the Paris trip and during rehearsals for Pip's play, but Laurette felt a phantom pull towards Mr. Bones. So when she was assigned an essay on the way the departed could effect businesses... she knew she had to track him down at the Hauntley!
"Excuse me, Monsieur?" She caught the chef as he was crossing the foyer. "Hi, it's me, Laurette! I was wondering if I could ask you some questions!?"

"Mim!" Laurette exclaimed, as her childhood bully huffed and puffed away with her tail tucked between her legs. Claire was always vicious, but the ginger had found a girl who was just a bit more...
She didn't call out to Mim to scold her, but to warn her. "T-thank you for that, but you really shouldn't practice Magick in public here... even sorcery is looked down on."
Laurette was a foolish girl most of the time, but she was no fool not to realize Mim didn't defend her solely to defend her. Mim was a very fierce advocate for Magick in general and though they had it in common, it wasn't enough to bring them together before. Maybe mean blooded Claire gave them something more to bond over. Maybe adversity was a better likeness.
"I didn't know you spoke French..." Laurette preferred that to be their unifying factor.

Laurette ran the gamut of emotions; shame, hurt, mortified. Seeing Claire must have snapped something from her mind back into the small headspace she used to occupy. The girl forgot all of the strides she'd made, how she left that small town and flourished somewhere else.
Claire always made her feel that way; small. So unimportant and awkward she could stomp on and then wash away lest she feel her under her feet. Mim being there only made matters worse. Laurette was home, but surrounded by people who didn't really like her.
She looked to Mim in horror when she replied with a very good impression of the French, full of attitude and spite. Claire's mouth gaped and mirrored Laurette's. She sputtered and fell into French, "Well I-- You don't know what you're talking about! She's the moron for thinking she should have ever come back!"
Claire seethed and shoved a finger at Laurette who winced. "I bet you're just like her. The both of you, freaks that ride brooms and deal with demons," she scoffed. "You should be careful, Laur, wouldn't want you to get reported for practicing in broad daylight..."

Previously on...
Laurette
Laurette didn’t know how it happened, but she somehow ended up alone with Mim while the others in the cast broke off to do their own things. Usually Mim wasn’t too bad if there was a buffer, something to focus on other than the grudge she held.
Laurette didn’t even know why she was so mad still! Tony and her had their moments, and made up after she remembered who he was.
She tried to make things less weird by talking, “So is there anything you want to see before the end of the trip?”
Mim To be fair to Laurette, the teeth of Mim's grudge had faded a long time ago. It was an old one, and a lot had happened since then, so she didn't think that much about Laurette. To her, the problem was that Laurette had never proved she'd had an actual personality to build on after that beyond being adorable and being a girlfriend, so Mim didn't see the point in wasting either of their time with each other. Mim at least usually had better things to do, and she figured the space gave time for Laurette to do…something. Find a hobby. Whatever. But somehow their group trip had dissolved as everyone had broken apart in a matter of moments, and it was just the two of them left. "Probably the Père Lachaise Cemetery. It sounds fascinating and I've never been, and the non-touristy parts are supposed to be cool. I wish I could go to the Art Ludique but apparently they're having venue issues again. Ugh."
Laurette
That was something she could work with! “I have never been either, I think it’s only a few blocks away!”
She pulled out her phone to verify her information, zooming in on a map. “Yes. And there’s a cafe with 4.7 stars on the way, so we can get a light l—“
When Laurette looked up to Mim, behind her she spied an all too familiar face. Her stomach dropped and she instinctively reached out towards Mim’s wrist as an anchor.
“Agh,” she grunted out and tried to turn her body away from the street. Laurette tucked her head low and pushed closer to Mim. Using her phone as a distraction from the situation, “see? It isn’t so far…”
Mim So, going to the cool famous cemetery with Oscar Wilde's grave in it accompanied by Miss Perky and French would not have been her first choice. Or her second. Maybe if it was Maddy who always had books to talk about, or dragging one of her friends through it while they groaned, that would be different. She kind of wished Tanya was here. It sucked a little bit to be gone almost a whole week of the time they had left. But whatever, food was always good and - As Laurette suddenly grabbed her arm and turned, Mim went on high alert. They were soooo not touchy feely with each other, and it didn't take a look at her reagents to see the way she was on the edge of freaking out. "Uh, yeah sure. Sounds good. I could use some food."
Laurette
“Great!” She yelped in a hushed tone, still trying to act as if nothing was wrong.
She glanced over Mim’s shoulder again to see the girl who tormented her all through primary and secondary school until she left France altogether still approaching.
“We should just… stand here for a bit…” It wasn’t a request that made sense, Laurette was aware! But she wasn’t the best under this kind of social pressure! Her and Mim’s relationship was a monument to that.
The effortless and evil girl would have walked right past them if they were a little more casual than just standing frozen on the pavement.
Instead, she stopped to regard them, “Ma Dieu, Laurette de la Croix?! I would have totally missed you if you didn’t still have that loud hair of yours!”
Laurette was frozen in fear, praying that was the meanest she would be without her posse in tow. The natural blonde continued in French, “I’m really surprised you showed your face here again! We all thought you finally gave up when you stopped coming to school and your boudin sister stopped coming around. Your father still lives in town, it’s a pity really. Though he goes for less freakish types nowadays…”
The only saving grace here was that Claire was only speaking in French at the moment, Mim wouldn’t understand. She then turned to Mim and in perfect English, “You are friends with her? I am Claire, we went to school together! How nice to meet new friends!”
Mim Unluckily for the vicious little Claire, Mim was fully fluent in French (language number 3/4 for her growing up, depending how you counted). She narrowed her eyes slightly as the words began. Then she shifted slightly. Where she had been standing casually before, she straightened subtly, spine straightening and head tilting up in a way that gave her the impression of looking down on the other girl. Her sense of presence expanded as she slipped easily into being the arrogant and untouchable Miriam Ambrosius. Whatever her issues with Laurette might have been, no one got to call her a freak. That was Mim's niche to fill. Smiling arrogantly as Claire turned towards her, Mim ran her fingers through her hair. Instantly, the natural brown rippled until it was a bright turquoise. In perfect French, Mim replied, "I see why she left if she was surrounded by morons like yourself. Your insults are as obvious as that nose job. I thought the French were supposed to be creative at least, but you are as stupid as your feet."

"Yeah, apparently, Luca, you are a bit of a spit fire!" Laurette couldn't see that from the student, but the stars weren't ever wrong before. And her specialty in divination allowed her to see the truth amidst the stars.
She gave herself some leeway considering the times weren't exact, but the rest of Luca's chart screamed that they were a loud social butterfly. A person with a hot temper and an resolute Mercury. Meaning, they stand firm in their communications and ideals. Most of the reading could be interpreted closer to Luca's actual personality if they weren't so rigid.
"Hm is right. If I didn't know better, I would think this chart is for someone completely different. You must have some hidden sides to you. Don't you?"

"Pretty, right?" She responded in kind.
Laurette kept this trinket with her, but it never lost its charm. This was the reason she was so passionate about her magick. Despite growing up in France, despite magick being the reason her mother left, she could still feel the strings of fate pulling her to lost souls like Luca. Laurette could help them in more ways than being their mentor or RA.
Her magick and Gift could help people. Whether it was like Luca and she could aid them in finding themselves, or help with choosing their own fates. It was her calling.
"If you look here, this is where the sun was," she pointed the brighter, yet distant, yellow speck floating amidst the black and blue expanse. "In the Aries part of the sky. Just like mine." She smiled.
She continued to babble about signs and degrees and how Luca seemed to be hiding a very loud personality behind their shy facade. "You know, the stars seem to say a lot I didn't know about you..."

“Would you? Really?” Laurette leaned over the table separating them, peering over the cards. The notion of any inkling of her future being revealed filled her with wonder.
It was hard to see glimpses into others’ lives and notice your own absence. Any speck of her presence was pushed to the periphery, should she be involved in their future. She couldn’t ask if her and her partners would be together, because in her divinations… she couldn’t exist.
“I— I have so many questions, but I should really only bother you with one, hm?”
She paused for a moment to think. She could ask about her love life or her friendships. But it all felt very surface level. It’s the kind of readings she did for friends. “Can I… I want to know if I will succeed and open my own shop. I want to have a fortune telling business and a storefront for mystical objects. Will I get there?”

Laurette didn't hesitate to sit down with her. She had so many questions, comments, and things to say! "Mhm! You're a sorceress too, right? I can't remember what specialty, are you Divination, too?"
She was referring to the cards, yes. Laurette had her own enchanted deck of cards. The enchantment wasn't anything fancy, nor did it bestow any extra powers to the cards, it just helped them not to bend or fray on the edges. "I'm a divination specialty, I actually have the Gift for it, but I can't see my own future. Are you doing a reading?"
The witch was too excited to meet an older witch that could potentially be like her!

Laurette was one of the few people to have a terrible time in her dream. She had yearned for an older man, a kitchen boy, and everyone in between. How embarrassing! And the kitchen boy DIED? Awful!
The few aspects she did enjoy were her lovely aunt and sponsor who felt like an aunt. Magica. In some twisted way, she reminded her of her mother. Maybe it was just the older witch who cared about her thing... Laurette missed having a sorcery mentor, not that she really had one stick around for very long. Hatter was her boss so it wasn't as if he taught her many cool tricks.
"Hey!" The beautiful raven hair caught her eye on the outside tables at Hatter's. "You were my sponsor! Remember me? What do you have there?"

Laurette assured, "Yeah, that's fine! It just helps to find out some other details. We can just do a noon time slot for now, it just won't be as accurate."
She reached out to hold their hands in hers, "can I see your hands?" Laurette kept a mini crystal globe with her for times like this. When she needed to divine something on the spot. The witch pressed the orb into Luca's palm. She sat and closed her eyes, trying to reach out to the stars. With her gift in divination, she could see the past a lot clearer than the future. So this was easy.
Focusing on the stars and Luca, Laurette breathed slowly. She imagined the night sky the fateful day that Luca was born and called for them to appear in the crystal ball. "Just like the Moon controls the tides, the stars align in ways that can influence us. We don't have to answer to them, but I believe that they can guide us to the things we are destined to be."
The orb darkened then filled with the light of the stars from nearly two decades ago. She'd done it! "This was the sky when you were born, Luca!"

"Our birthdays are so close together! Mine is the tenth!" Laurette exclaimed, not noticing the hesitation in Luca. "That means your Sun is in Aries, like me! We can be very passionate and excitable about the things we care about, but the downside of that is people seem to think we are quite emotional. Which... is true for me at least. But I can recognize that!"
The witch dug into her bag, rifling through to find some paper to write the information Luca gave her on, "And do you know what time, by chance? The closer to the time you were born we can get the more accurate I can gauge where the stars were."

Presenting...
Lady Laurette de la Croix, sister of the Baroness de la Croix. It was her first time walking this aisle, her hands were clammy inside her gloves. This was also the first time she’d be without her good luck charm, Aunt Yvette, since preparation for the season began. She only hoped her luck could be stored.
The doors opened and she heard her name and title. Her first mistake was regarding the crowd rather than the Kings, though both were scrutinizing her every move. She couldn’t find Yvette’s face anywhere. The young lady felt her confidence wane. She took a timid step forward, remembering to keep her chin up as she strode closer to the Kings. Looking at them now, both stony faced, she was sure she had already made errors.
Still, she continued down the aisle, a practiced smile on her face though she felt anything but pleased. It took all she had not to cry and abandon the season altogether. How had she already ruined everything? Her movements weren’t as poised and natural as she was taught to be, more akin to a fawn taking its first shaky steps.
When she reached the end, she curtsied to the Kings. Instead of keeping their gaze, she dipped her head to hide her shame. Politely they regarded her and Laurette de la Croix rose to leave her disastrous entrance to the season and stand with the others who clearly did much better than her.
