“You sounds like a quieter.” Chris shot back with a shake of his head. “I thought lawyers were supposed to be more motivated than that.” The teasing nature of Chris’ words were left known when his smile gave him away shortly after.

A snort left Adrian and he shrugged. “Most lawyers know when to settle. ‘M not quittin’. Just admittin’ when I’ve been bested.” His tone is light and joking, his grin spreading wide as he looked at the other man.

Freddie let out a scoff, “S’fine, you’re safe with me.” They wouldn’t dare to think they could pinch anything off of Adrian, that man was their friend and they wouldn’t ever think to be so cheeky. With a grateful nod they took the lighter offered to them and lit their own cigarette, taking a quiet puff. “Only so many breathers I can get away with ‘til I get the sack though innit?” they mumbled, the pressure had been building lately and it had become too easy to sneak out.

A shrug lifted Adrian’s shoulder as Freddie spoke. “Not necessarily. There’s only so much ya can take of drunk people til you need to get space or you’re gonna fight someone. May just be me though,” he answered with a grin, his voice light and teasing. “Seriously though. Dunno how ya do it. Put up with that many people. that many DRUNK people. I’d go mental.”

“Didn’t know you were gonna be out here, so no worries about sharing..” they had expected to be alone, but given that their company was one of the very few people they actually got along with they didn’t mind it. Freddie leaned forward and popped the cigarette in their mouth, “Too many people, but that’s the job isn’t it? Can I have a light?”

A smile twitches the corners of Adrian’s lips and he shakes his head. “No worries. Jus’ figured I’d warn ya,” he answered with a soft laugh. He nodded at Freddie’s question, holding out his lighter to the other. “Keep it. I’ve got another one in the car.” He took a long drag on his cigarette before he shrugged. “Should be allowed ta get a breather every now and then eh?”

“’soon as we get the hang of it, there’ll be another update.” Chris laughed at the irony. The fact that it always felt like they were catching on just in time to be left behind again. “Yeah, I’ll talk to him. We’ll get the hang out it.”

The sound of Adrian’s voice pulled them out of their immediate panic, at least he wouldn’t tell anyone about them sneaking outside. There was an unspoken friendship that warranted some concern for one another but that was kept between them. “In all honesty… that’s why I’m out here..” Freddie made a soft voice like they expected their decision to smoke was going to be judged. They finally dug out the half smoked packet and waved it at him, “Don’t kick my ass.”

A small smile found its way to Adrian’s lips and he shrugged, taking another drag on his cigarette. “Won’t kick your arse. Ain’t sharin’ these with you though,” he answered, his voice light and joking. He really did like Freddie. They were sweet and innocent in a way Adrian hadn’t been for a long time. “You alright? Too many people in there like always?”

“I’ve got a friend— Dimitri—” Chris began to explain. Sounding more like a proud dad as he did. “— he’s crazy good with computers. I don’t know how he does it. He’d figure this thing out in a second. We just gotta get him to explain it to us.”

His eyebrow rose, tongue darting across his lips before he nodded. “Long as he speaks slowly should be easy enough to follow,” he murmured with a grin. “Who knows. One day I may get the hang of this shite.”

“You have a collect call from Desmond Delaney an inmate at Treeville County Jail. To accept the charges for this call press 3, if you do not wish to pay for this call please hang up. If you no longer wish to accept calls from a correctional facility press star.”

Adrian lets out a soft sigh as he presses 3. Another collect call, another inmate looking for a lawyer willing to take a chance on them. This couldn’t be much different. 

“Your call is being transferred.”

He lets out another breath, reaching into his desk for the flask he kept there. It had been a gift from his mother when he’d graduated from law school, right before she’d fallen ill. His thumb absently traced 

There is rustling on the other end until Desmond’s voice is finally heard. “ADRIAN BRENNER. A lawyer and a sugar daddy - you’re a busy man.” His words are hushed, so no one other than Adrian can hear.

It takes Adrian a long moment to process what Desmond had said, his jaw nearly hitting the floor when the information finally hit him. How the FUCK did this kid know that? It wasn’t like he was ashamed of himself. It was his money, he could do with it what he damn well pleased. It was his Sugar Baby’s request that this be kept quiet and secret. So how in the hell did Desmond know? “Who the fuck are ya?” he asked quietly, glancing up to make sure the door to his office was closed. “What kind of bullshit is this eh?”

“I know all about it. I also have proof even you can’t deny in court. But here’s the thing - I’m good with secrets & I think we’d make a better pair helping each other out. Wouldn’t you agree?

Adrian felt his lip curl back from his teeth in a silent snarl, anger boiling up in his chest. He swallowed it down forcing himself to stay calm and not show just how much this was annoying him. “Yeah alright. Got my attention mate,” he muttered, hand lifting to run fingers through his hair. “What exactly do you want from me?”

“Here’s what I need from you. You have to pay my bail - and well - I need a ride out of this hell hole. What do you say ARE YOU GOING TO HELP ME OR SIT BACK WHILE I EXPOSE YOUR LITTLE SECRET?”

He hesitates for a long moment, a frustrated growl leaving him before answering through gritted teeth. “Good. Look forward ta seein’ you soon.” He hung up the phone, hand to scratch at the back of his neck.

It’d been a busy night, hard to keep up with some of the high demands thrown in their direction, so it was only a matter of time that Freddie snuck outside while activity briefly lulled. They dug around in their pockets for a brief second until they heard something move behind them, quickly they turned their head to address their company, “I’m not gonna ask why you’re here, so long as you don’t ask me..”

Despite the fact that Adrian didn’t drink, he liked hanging around the bar Freddie worked at. They’d become somewhat of a younger sibling to Adrian and he took it upon himself to check in on them whenever he had the time. A small smile spread across his face as Freddie spoke and he held up the cigarette in his hand. “Smoke break mate,” he answered as he lit it and took a long drag. “Don’t have ta tell me what’s got you runnin’ out here.”

“well, i figured even if it wasn’t your specialty that you’d find a way to get it done,” naomi told him sincerely. it was a praise that naomi didn’t give often, let alone to someone in the same profession as her. she had no doubt in adrian, though. he was the first person she’d thought of. “how about a drink after you win?” 

a shrug lifted adrian’s shoulders, hands moving to rest on behind his head. he was aware that the praise he’d been given wasn’t handed out often, so he didn’t push it. “shouldn’t be too hard,” he answered with a small smile. “long as i can get everything out the way i’d like. ‘s gonna be easy.” a laugh left him and he nodded. “yeah. long as you’re buyin’ me that drink then i’m all for it.”
