Sound File/Storyboard
Script:
The piece is introduced with mouse clicks and eventually beeping sounds. This is to represent the digitalized world. While on the walk-in spring by the beach where waves were crashing and kids were playing. an unpicked up phone call was made. A message was left on hold and never got picked up. This left a voice message explaining a complex relationship. Eventually, sounds of spring take over, the constant reminder that time is linear, forever moving forward. Tomorrow will eventually be a new day and life goes on.

What is your sound piece about? (concepts)
My sound piece is about a modern-day spring love. At the very beginning of the piece, mouse-clicking noises can be heard alternating through the right and left ear. This was done in order to capture the age of technology where information and connection can be done anywhere and anytime through devices. Afterward, high pitch beeping noises can be heard implemented with delay and reverb to create echoing noises that are to represent a digital heart. This is followed by sand crunching sounds of someone walking through sand. This sound will set the narrative of this sound piece to a beach setting where sounds of gentle waves crashing can be heard and then the telephone rings. This telephone ring is a harsh, loud, high pitch ring that sets the atmosphere concerned and unpleasant. I wanted this to connect with the start of the sound piece where mouse-clicking noises are suddenly heard followed by a series of unsettling beep noises, this connects with the feeling of discomfort. Being surprised by uncertainty and panic. Unlike messages or emails, phone calls come with elements of surprise and confrontational at times. All the sounds before the phone call are to lead up to the discomfort.
The audio was created to be full of emotion such as sadness, fear, loneliness, and insecurity. Like all breakups, the feeling of longing and stress is often experienced.
The piano piece comes slightly after the audio to slightly balance the sadness with a lighthearted melody. This piano piece gives off a spring feel opposite to what the audio expresses. Ultimately spring will pass and another season will arrive. The latter half of piano music, all sorts of spring sounds are played such as birds chirping, kids playing and spring rain.
Equipment I have used:
-Zoom H4n recorder -Piano -Pro-Tools -A Friends voice
Reflection, Changes, Thoughts: Overall this project has been a challenge to create. As a complete beginner to new software, creating a storyboard, combining, editing and mixing sounds were all a first for me. But this project gave me a completely new insight and perspective to film and how great of a role sound plays in cinematography.
Some changes I would like to make is a more realistic moment of action such as rather than just a series of events showcasing different spring elements. Anything to set the atmosphere and create great suspense in the air, rather than a moment of spring.
Sound Design showed me a new side to creativity. As a generation Z living in the time of media and content overload. The amount of visual information and graphics are everywhere. So being able to create something creative that is not visual but auditory is really interesting and new. Ideas of sound design can be limitless. Simply known to be vibration traveling through mediums, creating different combinations can have so many different meanings when seperated or combined.

Inspirations
Lofi: ‘low fidelity’ music production that uses lower quality produced sounds such as distortion, background noise, limited frequency, and imperfections. This type of music is good for students to study and focus as they work well as background music due to the repetitive nature and difference in sound where the brain will pick out different sounds to focus more on the task at hand.
Lofi incorporates 80′s vintage sounds and present percussion and base sounds that appear in hip hop music today.
Imperfections may include distortions and noise that will overlap. Lofi is relatively popular with Millennials and Generation Z. Lofi genre is great due to Lofi having a blend of ambiance sound with the right amount of rthymitic style which means you do not have to pay full attention to it but still enjoy the beats.
Lofi is a popular modern ambient music that is consists of simple repetitive beats. The genre requires very little attention to hear and therefore is perfect for background music, studying or working out.

Early reflections sometimes called initial reflections or pre Echols. Diffusion also is known as shape represents Eq -allows controlling the overall level of an instrument or voice. EQ allows us to zoom in to a sound and adjust the volume of the individual. Compression Master fader inserts a-e in your edit window view. Q bandwidth of frequencies Compression; Loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. This is down by boosting the quieter signals and attenuating the louder signals. Classical music is known to be more dynamic. This relates to the peak level and average level.

Research:
Music and sounds that sparked my interest was the soundtrack from the famous Studio Ghibli film ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’. The piece ‘Merry Go Round of Life’ composed by Composer Joe Hisaishi, in particular, left an impression.
Howl’s Moving Castle is a Japanese animated film by Hayao Miyazaki. The film is set in a fictional world where magic and technology coexist and war is approaching. A young girl named Sophia who works at a hat store gets cursed by a witch and becomes an old woman. Sophia will encounter a wizard named Howl and get involved in fighting for the kingdom.
Merry go round of life was the main musical theme for this animated movie, the composer incorporated instruments at certain times to match certain movements or narration of the film. This music composition combines joy, nostalgia, hope, and sadness in a waltz rhythm.
‘Merry Go Round’ symbolizes the never-ending cycle of something that occurs again and again in this case ‘war’ that is portrayed in the movie.

Yasashi Kimochi -Written by Maeguchi Wataru
‘Yasashi Kimochi’ is Japanese for kind feelings. This sweet romantic piano piece was chosen and recorded due to its soft and feathery melody. Essentially, this piece is chosen to capture the blooming season of spring.
The piece is played in major F as the key is in B flat. The piece also ends on a F major chord consisting of CFA keys. Major chords are meant to sound happy and brighter in contrast to minor chords.

Project Statement
My sound piece is named ‘A spring break’. I wanted this piece to be about a snapshot of a person’s life in spring where new beginnings are happening but also the end of a relationship. I wanted to convey the idea of ‘life still goes on’. There is where spring comes in. Spring is known for new beginnings, fresh buds, and life coming back on earth. The setting of spring makes the whole content shift from a light acceptance feeling rather than a dark grief period while showing hurt and recognition.
Inspirations come from ‘Howl’s moving castle’[studio ghibli] of their lighthearted animation scenes showing landscapes and scenery and always accompanied by piano scenes. These sounds give a carefree and blue feeling leaving the listeners feeling sad that the scene is over but as well as a happy and eventful ending.
I used a Zoom H4n recorder for all of my recordings a piano and also a friends voice. I decided to use natural sounds without recreating any through other software.
The changes I would make in my project is my audioboard. There is no specific storyline in my audio story but that would have made everything easier for myself to visualize my story. I would like to try make a visual video to help with my audio story. I wanted this piece to be surreal and almost too perfect for real life scenarios.

Dialogue & Foley
Next week: present and discuss Location recording: basically means that recording is recorded at the place of the film. Boom: a directional microphone to a boom pole to get the mic in the right position to capture dialogue while keeping mic out of the film shot. To capture clean sounds. Microphones: turn sounds into energy signals. Two types, condenser and dynamic. - dynamic, loud sounds, - condenser, pick up sounds with great detail and accuracy. Delicate, pick up and amplify more delicate sounds. (48v) (needs phantom power to use) Shotgun microphones: Lavalier: radio mics, used in situations impossible for the boom. Long shot taken from distance. Hidden out of sight of camera, work by sending recorded signal by cable. Kept on people. ADR: automated dialog replacement: - dialog that cannot be salvaged from production must be re-recorded in processes called looping or ADR. - walla Foley:Three important aspects of recording foley. Timing: timing of sound is important for synching. Performance: match with the performanceCreativity: rarely that the actual item on screen is used to make the sound. Creativity gets the perfect sound, big collection fo random equipment

Ideas
My initial idea was a celebration from new years eve going to new years. I wanted to convey the idea of happy times but also momentary sadness and regret left from the previous year that has yet to be fulfilled. Humans are creatures that show strong attachment through and this even applies to holding onto moments. I wanted to use sounds such as rain and ambient background noise.

Architecture of sound
Atmosphere: environment Dialogue: Speech SFX/Foley: realness, dimension, etc foot steps, body movement sounds, tires screeching. Music: sound design 10 hours Sound design examples: 1. Everyday life 2. Abstract 3. Panic attack, whispers, piano, merge Blob and sound design. Word press Sound noise and silence: What is sound: - vibrations, through mediums to travel - hear sound through our ears - convert fluctuations in the air pressure into the neurones into our Brians. Research: Sound is important and complicated +human voice-dialogue-story teller -expresses feelings-motivations. +sound effects -synchronous sound (only excuse one thing at a time) which are synchronised. -contributes to realism of film and help create atmosphere -eg. Clip of the door-asynchronous sound (execute multiple things at a time) effects, match with visible source of sound on screen. eg background noise of ambulance -music+add emotion and rhythm to a film +not meant to be noticeable +provide tone and emotional attitude towards the story and characters. + foreshadows a change in mood. +background aid understanding scenes. Musical theme associated with individual character Sound is largely associated with our subconscious minds. Foster an awareness of film sound, film space and the modern film.

Sound
What is Sound?
Sound is an energy wave caused by vibrations that travel through a medium and then into our ears. Stronger the vibrations, louder the sound.
