My Film Festival Lineup
If I were to create my own independent film festival, the theme would be comedy-horror. The lineup would include some of the best independent horror spoof films made, including the Scary Movies (all five of them), A Haunted House, Meet the Blacks, and Disaster Movie. Scary Movie I uses Scream as the main spoof theme, and follows the plot of the main movie very well with the addition of their own comedic spin. A Haunted House uses the Paranormal Activity franchise as their spoof theme. Meet the Blacks is a comedic spin off of the purge. Disaster Movie is slightly less horror themed than the others, but is still about the end of the world, just with dark humor and inappropriate jokes. All of these films use some type of dark humor in them with the addition of the plot being based on horror / death.
The first movie in the lineup is Scary Movie I (2000). Altering classic scenes from films like Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, I Know What You Did Last Summer, the story follows a group of teenagers who accidentally hit and killed a man one night driving. A year later, they are stalked and terrorized by a killer known as Scream. A review from Entertainment Weekly writes, “…Even if their R-rated spoof of slasher flicks served up fewer actual scares than fears of Y2K itself, it really did pull off some shocking feats. The summer film exceeded all expectations at the box office, sparked a franchise, and paved the way for half a dozen imitators in the years that followed. Perhaps most impressive of all, it successfully skewered Scream, the seemingly untouchable, unparody-able satire of the horror genre itself. Even Ghostface’s jaw would have dropped further if it could have” (Li). TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTLPULt0eJ4
Second in the lineup is A Haunted House (2014) which focuses on a couple who move in to a new house together, when suddenly the girlfriend notices unexplained happenings that convinces her the house is haunted. To calm her fears, her boyfriend hires a camera crew to film inside the house day and night, and they learn they are not alone. A review from We Got This Covered writes, “But hey, comedy is comedy, and I know some people are going to find Tiddes’ film hysterical. There were people in my screening almost crying from laughter, and I can positively say certain audiences are going to eat up every goofy moment Marlon Wayans has to offer” (Donato). Next in the lineup is Meet the Blacks (2016). When Carl Black moves his family from Chicago to California, things take a turn for the worst when the annual purge is announced and the family has to survive in a neighborhood filled with crazy racist white people. A film review from Behind the Lens writes, “An all-star comedy team led by Mike Epps, Charlie Murphy, Gary Owen, George Lopez, Lil Duval and laugh-out-loud cameos by Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson, MEET THE BLACKS is a genre bending spoof of “The Purge” and every horror movie you can think of, all under a fun-filled comedic umbrella. Taylor takes spoofing to new heights thanks to his comedically adept cast. But what is more enamoring is that with the dialogue and comedic notes, this is no holds barred. MEET THE BLACKS is NOT for the faint of heart OR the ‘politically correct”’. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivqhlpUCnZY
The final movie in the lineup is Disaster Movie (2008). A group of friends attempt to flee man-made and natural disasters and encounter Batman, Hancock, The Hulk, Indiana Jones, Hannah Montana, Michael Jackson, Beowulf, the Love Guru, Iron Man, rabid chipmunks amongst others in their seemingly vain efforts to seek help and shelter from unknown threats. While the film reviews are mostly negative with the Guardian saying, “The Zucker / Abrahams movies were genuinely funny, at least some of the time. But this? (Bradshaw), the film was one of my favorite dumb dark comedies growing up. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYBeeloO-ac
