On Dragonstone, Queen Rhaenyra collapsed when told of Luke’s death. As the black council sat to consider how to strike back, a raven arrived from Harrenhal. ā€œAn eye for an eye, a son for a son,ā€ Prince Daemon wrote. ā€œLucerys shall be avenged.ā€
Tumblr media
Broken by the loss of one son, Rhaenyra Targaryen seemed to find new strength after the loss of a second. Jace’s death hardened her, burning away her fears, leaving only her anger and her hatred. Still possessed of more dragons than her halfbrother, Her Grace now resolved to use them, no matter the cost. She would rain down fire and death upon Aegon and all those who supported him, she told the black council, and either tear him from the Iron Throne or die in the attempt.
— rhaenyra's reaction to death of her sons.

he is going to kill him, he decides. he is going to strangle jacaerys, or mayhap push him down some cliff. there were certainly enough of those at dragonstone, if he did it there. he needs only arrange a talk next to one and then push him, it would not even take effort. it will help towards the war, in any case, if he removes someone who is being such an annoyance. he is not thinking about his own annoyance or hurt or anger, he is being logical to advance their cause. and when mother asks him about kinslaying as the aberration that it was, he'd say it did not count, for this man was clearly no brother of his. the shared blood is a technicality, and not one he believes ought to be counted against him when he eventually throttles him. she will be upset at him, but that is a price he is willing to pay for peace of mind in the long term. she would mourn him, properly this time as they will have proof he is gone ( he remembers, the aching doubt that had followed jace's disappearance. after the searches had turned nothing, and after time had passed and he had remained gone... he must have been killed, the lords who were at dragonstone had told mother, he had heard enough of it to know it. he had to be dead, otherwise why would he not be here ? he had refused to believe it, for surely he would have felt it, if the figure he followed day after day suddenly was no more, but then he had not felt it when he had first left, had he ? he had not realized it when he had left in the first place ). it is only the mental image he conjures that keeps him from putting his hands 'round his neck in truth, and the thought that returning to mother and say he had attempted to fight him would probably be shameful.
ā€œ i remember my father more than well enough, ā€ it is only slightly a lie, and the acknowledgment of that to himself and himself only is enough to irritate him. he has only a handful of memories of the man, even less than he had of jacaerys before he had been gone. at least with his brother, he had been there on the daily. father had visited often enough before he had been killed, but it was not the same. it could never be. and yet, he remembers the man's face, and when he had sang to him, and the awe at seeing him with seasmoke. he remembers waiting for him at the doors when he arrived to see them. his face... he no longer recalls his exact eyes, or how long his hair was, but he remembers the care with which he had held them. the derision with which they had spoken of him... the rumors could not be true, he thinks, for what man would publicly claim sons not his own ? or act the way laenor velaryon had, if he were not his father ? ( he crushes the thought of ser harwin strong even further. his face he does not remember anymore and neither does he care to retrieve the memory of it. if jacaerys is so eager to claim him as sire, that is no business of him. he had heard the calling of his name towards him enough times he never wishes to hear the word again ). ā€œ and that is not why — you don't know grandsire, ā€ the comments on house velaryon sting, more than they should. it is his name, and it is his house, no matter that if mother succeeds to the throne he'd shed it eventually. in another life, one where jacaerys stayed where he was supposed to, he'd have been closer to grandsire even still, and been his heir. it'd have been better, not that he plans on admitting that to anyone, much less him. the seven kingdoms were so large, whereas driftmark was not.
a particular pain, he calls it. of course it had to be aemond. he should have expected this was his fault, annoying as he was. it had not been a pain, initially. it had been a shock, that had left him cold for days, and still did at times. his expression wipes out, at the latter words. ā€œ i do not have to justify myself to you. none of us chose this war and i find no fault in being close to my mother, nor will i apologize for it. ā€ it is not my fault if you are not, he almost says, before biting his tongue. it'd not be polite. coddled he calls him, he thinks, scoffing in his mind, and adds it to the list of reasons he shall give mother when he tells her he has officially gotten rid of him. ā€œ maybe — but we all have our roles to play. and you were a prince, once. ā€ the land would suffer with the war, but that he had not chosen either. if aegon had not usurped the throne, they would not be in this situation to begin with, and mother had sent them peace terms despite their treason. he almost considers turning and leaving. he does not need to explain himself to him, he thinks, internally furious. they are strangers. he does not need his approval. and he can say naught about money — he had all he could have asked, in that, that much he can recognize, but the weight jacaerys puts into it seems mercenary, when he considers the oaths westeros was supposed to have sworn. ā€œ you could have returned, once your dragon was older, ā€ he says it, barely above a whisper. vermax, he remembers, a forgotten half memory, of when he had attempted to and failed to say the name. he had toddled to another bed, once, he thinks with slight burrowed brows before he forces his face to turn expressionless again ( the mere thought of having to turn the dragon that had hatched to the boy he once had held it to turns his stomach, but if he plans to fight for their uncle it is not as though he would have another choice. ). he does not wish to supplant him, jacaerys says, and he wants to scream and demand why, despite that he had already said his explanation, despite how he keeps his reaction under lock and key. his title is not supposed to be his — it was supposed to be jacaerys', why would he not want to take it, if offered ? it makes no sense. ā€œ we didn't know where you were, but you knew. and you didn't come back. ā€ it is an accusatory tone he has, he knows, despite how he tries his best to control it, but he cannot not say it, whilst he has him. the next time he sees him, they may be on opposite sides fighting — he cannot not say it once.
"Do you even remember Laenor? I can recall his face so clearly, carried up steps to his death, before I was even found with Vermax in the depths of the ship before it was left to sink, and that is not a face you or I resemble. The Valyrian traits, as slight as they linger in either of us, never came from him, and pretending otherwise is only going to cause your own heart sorrow, for I accepted the truth long ago. Perhaps that is why the richest house in Westeros did not seek out Laenor's eldest son, for I was hardly that in anything more than a name."
He had not come here to speak so much, had expected a fight in truth once his blood brother had realized the Jacaerys had rejected that same tune. There was no call to bloodlines in his mind. They might be brothers, but it was far more obvious they were strangers, and even more so, enemies. "I did not seek a side. I was sought out by Aemond, who heeded rumors of Vermax in the east. I have no notion that it was less than the idea of another dragon to their side - I could have been anyone, though it seems a particular pain in your side, and perhaps even your mother's, that it is me that was found, rather than some stranger who had found a seat upon a dragon's back."
For if they were bastards who could mount dragons, perhaps others might as well. An errant thought, nothing more. The wild and unclaimed beasts were on Dragonstone, out of the reach of those who provided him and his men gold and the means to survive. It was not his mind to provide them with the idea, but he cannot think he is the only intelligent member of this family lot, as much as he has forsaken and forgotten his name. Jacaerys is the only name he claims, and no surname, nothing to follow it, and no familial nickname to answer to any longer. Jace is as dead as he has been since his family made the choice to forget him, to refuse to seek him out, when they had the means to.
"I did not come here seeking anything. I would have avoided Westeros the rest of my days, but I have men dependent upon my ability to secure them gold, and food, and a future, and they will answer to me for that protection. Loyalty is easily bought for those of us who did not grow up under the skirts of a coddling mother or sleeping in feathered beds. If you had not been so bound to the breast of your mother, perhaps you might understand, but life is far more difficult for a layman than a prince, and all of this land will suffer for the pettiness of Prince and Princess fighting for a chair, rather than their people. You will all bleed your people and your dragons dry before you find peace, and I will be long departed from these shores before Vermax can find death."
It is a long speech, and one he would not provide to the men serving him with gold. Perhaps the only piece of 'brotherly' advice he might provide to Lucerys, to Joffrey if that had been who he had met. Or wisdom from a forgotten son to a mother, if she had sought him out herself. Of course, if the stories were true, she was still recuperating from the birth of yet another replacement child, another that might succeed in some future where she might win this battle. "The winning side is whoever survives, which is something one learns when they are not shackled to castle stones. I have no desire to find myself cut by swords of a long ago forged seat that means little and less as the dragons find themselves shrinking in the dragon pits." For Vermax, young, is large than might have been, had the chains stayed upon them. "I have no desire to supplant Aegon, or Rhaenyra, or yourself. I will leave, once there is no more benefit for my men, my ships, or myself. My loyalty is bought, which is a notion one learns when he must fight for scraps, rather than be served."

My Opinion on @realmsdelite;
Character in general: i love rhaenyra. listen i'm not unbiased when it comes to her. princess & queen of all time to ME. yes she has flaws. but she's also such an enduring person, who tries so hard while attempting to work with the cards she's been given, who suffers so much ? i've chosen to forgive her all and every action because i'd have crashed out so much earlier than she did dealing with what she did. i need to get rid of every adult who ever interacted with her actually. one of my favorites. How they play them: oh my god i love kore's rhaenyra. words will never do it justice, because they are truly ? god. i love reading any thread, she has the voice down so perfectly. her thoughts and the thought process and the changes as rhaenyra grows and in every situation ? how she'd react if x or y happened ? or in the different aus. i love hearing the insight on everything it is truly ? so so great. ANYWAY i think their rhaenyra is great and i love it very very much. again i don't have enough good things to say. The Mun: they are great. kore is so ? so nice, constantly. so kind and so incredibly easy to talk to, in a way that is always comfortable to. and she's so incredibly talented 😭 she's so creative and comes up with such great ideas constantly and i love hearing everything no matter the topic because it is genuinely such a joy to talk to.
Do I:
RP with them: yes <3 Want to RP with them:Ā yes <333 always
What is my;
Overall Opinion: so incredibly positive. 10/10 etc etc. deserve the world and more and a good day every day. she's such a great person ok ( also constantly saving me with fcs. it is not exaggeration when i say that like 2 / 3s of those i use are originally kore's idea ).

the first person who heard (and saw) about arrax hatching was jace — luke went immediately to wake him up to show him, too excited to show someone and being unable to wait until the next morning, and wanting to show his older brother how he had a hatchling to match jace's own.

ā€œ jace, ā€ he repeats the name slowly, despite how strange it feels to call a prince of the realm by not only his mere name, but a shortened version of it. when he had first awoken, before the fisherman had connected him to the son of rhaenyra targaryen who had fallen into the sea, he had assumed he had been someone from the stormlands. part of the commonfolk, who had taken a ship and had been shipwrecked and had become lost. he had not thought he had known anyone important ( for otherwise why would he have been where he was ? in what other way could he have gotten himself there ? ) — much less the royal family. even now, he has to force himself to use their names. he is hoping saying it will spark some remembrance in him, at least — some old memory thrown into the light, but there is nothing.
ā€œ yes. everyone has been very welcoming. i've been... trying to remember. being outside helps, sometimes, i can see... ā€ his words trail off. he is fine now. he knows he had not been, when he had been found, but he did not enjoy thinking about that time. he remembers still the bruises and the fever that had nearly taken him. he had been lucky, all things considered — they had thought him dead. he should be dead. they had said he had fallen, but the dragonkeepers had thought when his dragon and him had done so, arrax had taken much of the impact. had his dragon not been alive to do so... he does not see the point in going over that. it is not as though he can do anything about it. ronnel had said to queen rhaenyra and he had listened to it once. that had been enough. ā€œ and i am fine now. ā€ he says, somewhat more stiffly than he would like, before his eyes go over prince jacaerys' state. he had been trying to remember, and yet he had little more than small flashes, still. it did not seem like useful information that he could do much with. he did not wish to say it, and give them false hope, only for him to never recover more.
ā€œ how are you ? they did not say much about it, ā€ probably because they had seen no purpose in it. as far as luke was concerned, jacaerys ( jace, he tells himself again ) was the crown prince now, and naught else. whatever brotherly concerned he might have felt normally, there is nothing in him now. still. he may not feel it but... it did not mean it did not nag at him. he had felt the grief of those around him, when he had arrived and he had learnt there had been another older boy who had flown on his dragon and left, to save the youngest of the queen's sons. from the queen to the common people, it had passed through them like waves. he may feel no connection, and yet he cannot help but worry for his well being and where he had been. rationally, he thinks. he is being practical, he was an important person who held an important position. it made sense that he did not wish him hurt. ā€œ only that you and prince viserys had been gone ? to another city ? ā€ it comes off as a question, in the end, as he probes for answers.
He had been warned, at the very least. When he and Viserys and Vermax had returned, several weeks after the battle, all three of them thought lost, there had been much changed. Luke had been found, though he had no memory of any of them, and Aegon was fine, while Stormcloud had perished. Jace was near recovered from his injuries, and Viserys had only been mildly hurt, though even that had concerned the eldest brother. Jace still did not know how his dragon, who he had seen sinking into the waves, had managed to survive and find him, but he was grateful that he had. "I know. I understand." As much as he is able to, a boy still, who had mourned and grieved his brother and buried that in the war, and ensuring his mother's succession. With Luke returned to them, he did not know what to do here. He wanted to try and figure out a way to get Luke to remember, but he had no idea how. No idea what he might show him or say or do that might bring those memories back. He resists the urge to place a hand on his brother's shoulder, any sort of comfortability, as it would likely be the opposite to his brother, lost to his own injuries. "Please, call me Jace. I know you do not remember, but hearing my full name makes me feel as though I'm about to receive a scolding." It is, in a way, his attempt to bring levity to the situation, though it is true. His full name was reserved for official affairs, or to bring attention when he would rather distract from it. Hearing his brother use his name, and his title, just made the world feel like it was wrong. Which it was - all of this was incorrect. They should be at peace. None of this should be happening. independent multi muse from grrm's a song of ice and fire. book and headcanon based. as written by sophie.
