The Sirens by Edward Burne-Jones is an oil painting on canvas, is 213.4 cm x 305 cm, and was left unfinished when Jones died in 1898. The painting shows a ship surrounded by sirens (sea nymphs who lure in sailors by singing). The coloring of this painting is dull, possibly to show the calamitous fate of the sailors. The larger group of sirens on the left helps to balance the ship and the debris in the front being off-center and slightly to the right. This artwork is inspired by “The Odessey.” In this poem, Odysseus must pass by an island of sirens, and he orders his men to fill their ears with wax to prevent them from hearing the sirens' songs. Odysseus himself is tied to the mast to protect himself from the siren’s seduction.
When I first saw this painting, I did not realize that the women are sirens. I had assumed that they were the wives of the sailors either seeing them off or welcoming them home. After reading the title, the painting felt more powerful to me. I went from seeing them as stereotypical gentle and passive wives to the controlling and destructive beings that they are. I was then drawn to this painting and became curious about the story behind it. This may be due to the interest I had in Greek mythology when I was younger. This painting makes me feel pity for the sailors, but also interested in the sirens and how the situation will play out.
This artwork is associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Jones was a part of the second generation of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which consisted of more muted colors instead of the bright and potent colors of the early years of the movement. I think that Burne-Jones might have been trying to say through his painting that people blindly follow their lust or desires without thinking of the consequences. He may not have believed that he fully got the message across, as it remained unfinished. Based on my research and everything I have learned so far about art and artists, this work of art shows the beauty and allure of the sirens, but it is also a reminder to the viewers to be cautious and aware of the consequences of their actions, as not all beautiful things are good for you.
