i hate to partially hijack this post, but what you said about purple haze’s design is part of the reason i’m not a fan of the “what if fugo just locked in and used purple haze omg part 5 would have been over in 20 minutes”. if i had a constant, destructive physical reminder of my trauma, especially something as horrible as s/a that not only can harm me, but harm those i’m close to, i too would not want to bring it out just for combat purposes.

what abbacchio says about fugo never bringing purple haze out really hits a lot harder with the context of his backstory and trauma in the anime imo. especially with, like you said, the stitches over it’s mouth and a constant fixation on cleaning itself.

Just rewatched golden wind and I am once again feral over how much depth the anime produced backstory adds to Fugo's character. It fits his design so much that I am staring to wonder whether or not Araki intended to write it exactly how it was portrayed but much later on, and because of the writing and plot changes that occurred it was scraped.

Making Fugo a victim of sexual assault considering his Stand's looks and actions is so fitting that borderline scares me. Usually, I find the addition of SA in media unnecessary since it's hardly ever treated with the delicacy and depth it deserves. However, taking into account the stands sewn shut mouth as a metaphor for the victim being unable to be heard and understood, the explosive personality and the undefinable need to be clean are blatant signs that something bad is going on. Fugo's Stand also emits something childish sometimes, which also makes perfect sense since most of Fugo's childhood was lost studying and carrying his parents' expectations. So I find it unnerving that out of all the backstories, fans and other people who worked on the anime or the light novels gave him, this one is the best fitting to his characters' proze.

It also says a lot about Araki's ability to perfectly write nuanced side characters with their own personalities and vices, even if their character arcs are left unfinished that inspire other artists and writers to complete what he left unfinished. Especially with golden wind, Araki does a magnificent job showcasing the dynamics between bucciarati's gang as well as their individual fleshed out personalities and commend them with Stands that so closely depict their true inner self. Fugo's potential as a character will never stop amazing me, and he is a perfect example that even if your writing is not doing justice to every minor side character, readers will appreciate and elevate them to new heights. While I will always grieve Fugos' lost potential in the original story, I am beyond grateful for it because it gave us so many good stories and light novels and essays and love for a character that otherwise might have received none
