Me, recently: Steven Gerrard is retiring from Liverpool Football Club. I am really sad.

Everyone else: I'm so sorry. I know how much Liverpool FC means to you and Gerrard's a really important member of the club and I'm sure you're devastated. I empathize with your feelings, and validate them, because sport communities become families of a kind, and I know the LFC community is a big part of your life.

1D fans today: Zayn is leaving One Direction. I am really sad.

Everyone else: What is wrong with you why are you so stupid it's just a boy band why do you care about such dumb meaningless things when you could care about stuff that really matters, like groups of adults attempting to kick a sphere into a net.

Another way to think about it is that the term ‘skinny shaming’ rubs people the wrong way because it implies that being shamed for being skinny is systemic in the same way that fat shaming is. Which it just isn't. No one is denying that people of all body shapes and sizes can be subject to criticism (and often are, especially women), but I think a better way to make the distinction is by including ‘skinny shaming’ under general body shaming. 

Body shaming, amongst women especially, is important to discuss and we need a place to do so. However I think that by acknowledging that being shamed for being skinny is a thing, but that it comes under general body shaming just the same as being judged for other aspects of physical appearance does, we can have better discussions surrounding body shaming without anyone implying that being shamed for being skinny is anywhere near the same as for being fat :))))

Hey not personal but, I saw you reblog on that skinny shaming post and yeah. Skinny shaming isn't a thing at all. Obviously its shit for people to comment on someones body or be rude. Also the whole anorexia argument really rubs me the wrong way because a large number of people with eating disorders AREN'T skinny and don't get the treatment needed because people think its good for them. Think what you will about it but this is me as a fatty calling you, a skinny person out on this stuff

Yeah, I don’t like how that post put it exactly, because it made it seem somewhat equal, which I would have argued more in the tags but I didn’t, BUT

I’m never going to argue that skinny people get shamed NEARLY as much as fat people, I know it’s not that there’s a societally-determined “average” or “normal” weight and deviations to either side are shamed equally, but it still HAPPENS. Diseases and disorders get associated with being ‘fat’ or ‘thin’ and people on either side can get assumed to be unhealthy for one reason, while their vulnerability to another thing is ignored.

The percieved ‘norm’ or ‘ideal’ for body shapes and sizes shifts around through time and in different groups. I really don’t think you can say that fat shaming is a universal pervasive problem whereas there’s absolutely no chance that skinny shaming is a thing. Please don’t tell skinny people how to interpret their own experiences. I know that fat shaming is currently a far worse problem, because we’re currently in that ‘fashion’, but some people still do get shamed for being ‘too’ skinny. And sometimes it’s awful mixed messages, because the same person can be made to feel ashamed for being either too fat or too thin. 

But I’d be interested in discussing this further?

Mum: It was something like 'orphan is the new black'

Me: That's two separate shows

Mum: No

there was a one with dark hair in glasses that you thought was hot

and i'm pretty sure she was a lesbian

because she was going out with that blonde lady

Me: That still could be either show

Mum: I think there were clones

Me: There we go.
