Evaluative Report
At beginning of the course, I totally have no idea of typography and don’t know any rules or what should I notice when I do the lay out or choose the font for texts.
From the first week of the course, tutor started giving us some example words and typeface to experience how it feels when the word match with different font. As different meaning of words, we tried to find a suitable font to express more multiple emotions from the text. The text is like a naked people, and the meaning of the text is as the personality of this person, and when this person stays in different place, he/she should dress up with an appropriate cloth, which is fit with the situation and emerge his/ her personality. As tutor told us, the font of Didot and Bondoni are two classic fonts to be used, and they are can be compared to people where normal suit to a banquet, there is nothing wrong, formal and not casual, but just not impressed and eye catching.
During autumn term, mostly we learned the knowledge from the work we done and presented our work on the class to give more examples to other classmate what tips should we notice. The first task is that finding 5 fonts to fit in the word I got, and the word I got is ‘Sparkling’. The fonts I found at the beginning, most of them are created by specific people, such as the designers of the brands, and font might be someone’s handwriting. However, these fonts couldn’t be displayed on the text I got, so after the class I did the task again to correct the work I done. After this task, I learned that typography is not like art, do the things follow designer’s heart , in the other hand, it should follow some rules and it’s also a serious job. The second task is that doing a magazine layout for 4 pages. We have to do a layout for an article and some pictures as a magazine. There are some tips like the ‘word’s spacing’ and ‘justify’ or like ‘tracking’, if I didn’t take the course I might mot notice these, and after learning layout and choose font for texts, I finally understand what a big job for typography, and a clean layout might spend a long time make it, and it doesn’t look as easy as we think. The last task, we have to design a typography poster from a photograph from the assigned year. We present what we have learned from previous weeks on the poster, and the best design is showing the information clearly but serious.
It’s a great and worth experience to learn typography and after the course, it would keep remind me to notice the layout from magazine and what can it be improved, and it’s also really helpful for my further work in the studio. Whenever I finish the work I done in the studio, if I can present it with a small book, it would be more complete process to list the work as a series. It’s an useful course that we learn knowledge of typography, and we can practice it when we doing any graphic design in the future.

Poster for Le baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville, photo by Robert Doisneau (1950)

The year I have to research is 1950, and the photos from 1950 are all black and white colour. This photograph captured a couple, who was kissing outside of the hotel. This is a beautiful picture, which is full of love and that why I chose a soft pink colour as background, but I didn’t use red as love cuz their kiss looks smooth and soft and they enjoy this moment. If I applied red on it, the visual would be too strong. The font I used is PT SANS, looks lie the couple, they are stable but lyric.
