‘Dreamers Awake’ - the surrealist presence in female art. White Cube Bermondsey, 190817
From top:
Mona Hatoum - Hair Necklace (wood), 2013. Made of hair.
How was the hair contorted into spherical shapes. At first glance, to me it showcases how fashion can be an extent of myself and my identity, by replacing the metalwork for what I imagine is her own hair. It is in a typical connected line of pearls shape, which was popular in decades gone by and is still worn typically by an older generation. Pearls are commonly associated with beauty, perhaps it is saying that we do not need anything other than what our body gives us to make us beautiful.
Donna Huddleston - Incognito, 2017. Made of Caran d’ache pencil on paper.
This features several images. And I really enjoy this custom frame. It gives it almost an outline of a residential property, with the tiled basement and bathroom on the bottom, and a sort of indoor pool/lounge and staircase in the middle with a pale lady looking towards us in the attic. She looks cowgirl-esque. The landscape in the background makes me think she has some kind of affinity with nature. The middle left image is a collection of images, I believe, with the boldest part being a womans foot dipping into a body of water. I think this collection of layers in a building represents how it has changed throughout the ages, and the pale lady makes me think that she is a ghost. I interpret this piece as drawing parallels to how women have had to stay passive over the course of history and how their environment has changed around them (and beneath them).
Hayv Kahraman - T25 and T26, 2017. Made by Oil on Linen
Makes me think of the film Ghost in the Shell and the creation of robots that look human. The figures are almost identical and have something inhuman about them. I really love how their shirts are woven into the linen, the skirt patterns, and the swirls for their hair. It is a very creative way to show these patterns and objects.
Sascha Braunig - Lashes. Made by Oil on Linen.
The reflection of the facial ‘lashes’ are so reflective that it almost doesn’t look like oil paint! The contrasting primary colours make the lashes stand out well.
Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois - Just Hanging, 2009-2010. Made by archival dyes printed on cloth.
Even though hangings are closely linked with death, I find this piece somewhat playful, because of the stability of the erect penis. I can see it linking with how females are often controlled by a patriarchy - represented by the penis. But I think the image should have some sort of background to make the hanging more upsetting. It seems like more could be added to these pieces to me. I really like Louise Bourgeois’ neat signature/monograph on her pieces. It is a refreshing take on signatures for me.
Loie Hollowell - Body of Water (in Yellow), 2016. Made by Oil and acrylic medium on linen over panel.
Up close, these shapes are filled with little waves of varying colour to help add shading to the overall colours. I find the image very striking as it is such large shapes of full uniform colour.
Shannon Bool - Michaelerplatz 3, 2016. Made by wool tapestry.
I am very curious as to how this was made. It looks like a photograph, yet it is made out of wool. Was it printed on wall? I love the pattern that marble can create, it is a very luxurious material to me. The setting evokes high-fashion from the materials and the mannequin. It could also be that the mannequin is a broad idea of how a woman can be seen. Without a face/identity, reflective and so being a chameleon in the environment, having to adhere to a constructed ideal of beauty. It is a beautiful, luxurious image but with a very sad and lonely tone to me.
A VERY SPECIAL SHOUTOUT GOES TO: Shana Moulton,
for her short films involving her alter ego, Cynthia. I feel very comforted by Cynthia’s presence. Her home environment has a lot of mismatched clutter, which feels relatable and comforting. Bringing alive inanimate objects involved in Cynthia’s dilemmas is partly humorous to me, partly in the way that they are ‘photoshopped’ in a very noticeable fashion. Her surreal short films are other’-worldly, dream-like, and yet feel very real. I think I can relate it to how one can dream of the problems that they have comes across in their day, and the connections that their brain makes during the dreaming process.

Taking something dark and styling it in a friendlier, more colourful and cartoonistic manner.
The guillotine blade should have the coloured balls rattle and bounce as it comes down.

Website image for Tongue Fu poetry. The artist links the play-on-words inspiration for the organisation (Kung Fu) and produced layers, creating movement, of martial artists in a range of warm colours on a black background.
Powerful. Mind-to-body connection. Spirituality.
