I understand that every singer has a deep desire to singe REALLY great, and REALLY FAST. Although there are some instances where singers make huge improvements in a short amount of time, it's important to realize that vocal training (or retraining) your voice, is something that can take some time and can be compared to physical therapy in some ways. It takes time to change bad singing habits, and doing exercises with scales is a great way to begin retraining your voice.

I worked with an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) for MANY years, and have developed the most effective and safe way to help one develop their voice and have great singing technique.

A lot of the time, a singer that's practicing with singing other artists songs, will tend to emulate the artist. If the artist has bad technique, then this can translate into bad technique, so using exercise scales is the best way to begin learning how to coordinate using your voice and working on your vocal technique. When you look closer, some of the absolute best singers use scales for their vocal training, because they know the huge value in practicing with scales.

The way that I like to do things, is to begin with vocal exercises to get a singer into a good place, then end with a song that they can put the new techniques into practice on.

Now, I have to say that all my videos share general information, and they're not a substitute for medical advice. So, it's always best to get with your doctor, if any issues persist.

With that being said, when any of my clients share that they're experiencing issues with their throat, I first ask them if their throat is sore... If it is, I never work with the client, as vocal training can cause additional irritation. Sometimes, if it's really serious, I suggest compete vocal rest for a few days (with no talking at all).

Additionally, when a singer goes through a particular age change, their voice also changes. So, it becomes important to learn how to sing with proper vocal technique, with their new voice. It requires producing sound in an entirely new way.

I share a simple exercise here that doesn't put too much strain on the vocal chords, which is the humming exercise. Doing this exercise alone and mixing the cadence up a bit, can do wonders for your technique, and bring your voice back into focus.
