Wild rivers and pristine lakes are notable features of the Canadian Rockies. Lake Louise sits at the top of the list, and is considered one of the most famous lakes in the world!

Glacier-fed Lake Louise is a popular destination but it’s only one of several beautiful lakes in the Rockies. The thrashing rivers, canyons and waterfalls along the famed Icefields Parkway are also worth exploring.

The glacial rivers and lakes in the Canadian Rockies shine a striking turquoise hue, much like what you’d see in Slovenia’s Soca River. When compared to Slovenia, however, the bodies of water in the Canadian Rockies are set against a backdrop of majestic mountains.

On the other side of the world, the Himalayas offer fascinating wildlife like yak, musk deer and the red panda. However, these are much harder to spot when walking along the busy and established teahouse trails.

Your Dog’s the Best Travel Companion for Staying in Shape

Daniel Sherwin of DadSolo.com is back to tell us why travelling with your dog can be the key to staying in shape while on vacation!

A Match Made in Heaven

You like to run, and they like run. You like to swim, and they like to swim. You like to cycle, and they like to … well, run alongside your bike. It’s a match made in heaven, and there’s no reason you should leave your four-legged friend at home while you have all the fun on vacation. Not only will they be an excellent travel companion, but also their boundless energy will ensure you stick to your fitness routine no matter how many margaritas you had the night before. Here are some fun activities to do together on the road, as well as a few special places to take your good boy if they deserve it. (They do.)

Take Your Run

Jogging in the early hours has become a regular part of your routine, and your dog always does their best to keep up, so there’s no reason to stop now. In fact, this could be the best way to take in the local scenery, for both of you. As an added extra, your pooch will burn off some excess energy, which is great if you’re planning to travel further on by car.

Hit the Trails

Now’s the time for a proper hike, and your dog will enjoy it more than you. They’ll feel alive and refreshed by the natural scents of the woods, which appeal to the wolf within. You may even find your friend to be less high-strung than before, says a writer at Backpacker magazine, as the outdoors are wonderful therapy for animals as well as humans. If needed, bring along a retractable leash; you can set the leash to a preferred length, which is ideal in wide, open spaces.

Go for a Swim

Some dogs love the beach. Try to find one where there’s plenty of room to run around and go for a doggy paddle so you can get the most out of your time in the sun. Speaking of that, it would be wise to pack a tent or umbrella that provides a bit of shade in case your pup needs a break from the heat.

Play Fetch

Bring along a Frisbee. They’re small, light and easy to pack. Plus, your dog can get his air game on much better than with a boring old stick. If they seem a bit flummoxed by the new toy, just smear a bit of peanut butter around the edges for encouragement, chimes in the Dogington Post.

Try Cycling

The trouble of bringing your bike along is worth it as cycling shows you and your dog a much greater expanse of the countryside than walking or running. Smaller breeds can sit in the basket while you do the pedalling, while more athletic canines prefer to trot alongside, in which case you may want to consider a bike leash made specifically for the purpose.

  You know that getting away is good for your own stress levels, but travel has lots of benefits for the youngest members of your family, too. However, when it’s no longer just the adults, travel can get complicated. Here are a few tips on how to ease to burden (and boredom) of hitting the road with the littles in tow.

  Plan Ahead

When it comes to travelling with kids, your main priorities are safety and convenience. Ensure you have the best of both worlds by planning ahead… well ahead. If possible, begin your vacation destination search six to nine months before you want to leave. This will give you the opportunity to explore multiple options and let you take advantage of the best rates. Travel+Leisure lists 50 (mostly free) apps that can help you along the way.

  Stop and Stretch Your Legs

Kids get bored easily, especially if you’re on a multi-hour road trip. Make plans to stop every few hours so the kids can stretch their legs, take a bathroom break, and burn off some excess energy. Better yet, leave a day early and take the scenic route. As GM Financial explains, the road less taken often has sights you won’t see anywhere else. Plus, you’ll avoid traffic and have more options to pull over if the need arises.

  Help Nervous Children Prepare

No matter how excited your child seems, there’s always the chance that he or she will succumb to nerves on their first flight through the friendly skies. You can help circumvent much of the anxiety your child might feel when facing this new experience by keeping an open line of communication and listening to their concerns. Plan to pack plenty of distractions in your carry-on, which can take your child’s mind off their fear of flying.

  Make Your Own Accommodations

If you’re travelling with an infant or toddler, a portable travel crib will expand your overnight options, especially when your accommodations are lacking in size. Most travel cribs can be broken down to fit in a small bag and will ensure your littlest love has a clean place to rest when you’re not at home. Let your child nap in his travel crib a few times prior to the trip so that he or she will be more comfortable and won’t wake up in unfamiliar surroundings.

  Choose a Resort

Family resorts are popular choices and can be a wonderful introduction to the world of travel. Most large resorts have rooms and suites that will fit your entire brood, and many offer on-site childcare and activities aimed to capture the interest of kids from toddler to teen. If you’re on a budget, consider an all-inclusive option (then let the kids go wild at the dessert buffet at least once). Parenting magazine lists the best resorts for families and offers options from the Dominican Republic to New York.

  Bring a Friend

Teens and tweens might be more open to the idea of time away if they can bring a friend. This is especially true if you only have one child. As much as time spent together as a family is important, so too is having the opportunity to experience new things with peers.

  Travelling with kids takes work. There’s lots of planning, plenty of expenses, and infinite variables that will influence everyone’s enjoyment of the trip. However, despite the inconveniences, travel is never a waste, even if your kids are too young to remember. The Huffington Post reports that children who travel frequently develop positive habits such as taking responsibility for their own belongings. Travelling even just a few states from home can expose children to a different way of life and expand their view of the world.

A Beginner’s Guide to SilverStar Mountain Resort

For anyone new to skiing or snowboarding, navigating a bustling mountain resort may seem a little overwhelming at first. Fortunately, during the latest Leavetown trip to SilverStar Mountain Resort in Vernon, BC, this beginner snow explorer received a comprehensive lesson in how to truly take advantage of everything the resort has to offer.

Despite being born and raised in Vancouver – less than a two hour drive to Whistler – I’d only had the pleasure of skiing once before, 15 years ago. Needless to say, the charming and colourful SilverStar Village greatly lessened any worries I may have had about (finally) learning this new skill and sport as I watched families, couples, experts and novices alike effortlessly share the skiway. The Village itself – complete with bright blue, green, yellow, red and purple buildings all strung with twinkling fairy lights – provided a whimsical and Disney-like aesthetic against a backdrop of the Monashee Mountains.

Approaching Snowbird Lodge, where myself and three other colleagues were to stay for the weekend, it was immediately clear that this resort would offer not only a memorable first-timer experience, but a true ski-in/ski-out paradise for the other intermediate skiers in the group. Over the next 3 days, we were lucky enough to be shown the ropes and learn insider tips from the enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff at SilverStar. From mountain tours to snowshoeing, and fine dining to fat biking, Leavetown had an intimate first-hand glimpse into slopeside life in the Okanagan’s iconic ski resort.

The following Beginner’s Guide has been compiled for anyone looking to experience the fantastic activities and experiences offered on the mountain. Whether you’re a snow sport newbie, seasoned expert, or Village wanderer, at Silver Star Mountain there’s a little something for everyone.

  Rentals

Located at Ski Dazzle on Main Street Boardwalk, Silver Star’s Village Rental Shop is where to go for all your rental inquiries. Offering a variety of packages, guests can choose to rent skis, snowboards, helmets and boots on a per day basis, or for 5 days or more. Ultimate rental packages allow for enthusiastic visitors to exchange equipment between categories throughout their stay. Packages include Performance, Night Skiing, Nordic, Snowshoe, Fat Bike, Snowblades, clothing and helmets.

For beginners, it’s as simple as signing a waiver form, detailing your experience (or lack thereof), and being properly fitted for any equipment you may need. Personally, I was hooked up with the Beginner Ski Package, and was provided with everything I needed to start my day right from the shop’s doors.

**Beginner Insider Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It’s better to inquire sooner rather than later with any concerns you may have about the rental equipment. If you’re worried something doesn’t fit, or feel uncomfortable in any way, the friendly staff at the Rental Shop will be more than happy to help you out.**

  Snowsports School

No matter what your skill level, many skiers and snowboarders suggest enrolling in a professional lesson – either to refresh their memory (and their muscles) or to learn a new sport altogether. At Silver Star, there are plenty of different levels, lessons and packages available for any type of learner of any age. In fact, Snowsports School is one of the most renowned in Canada, offering classes from amazing professional instructions from across the globe.

Adults and children alike can enroll in group or private lessons for alpine skiing, freestyle, cross country and more. As a complete beginner, I opted for the “Never Ever” lesson to get my bearings on the bunny hill, and was enrolled in a lesson with Lewis, an instructor hailing from the UK who first learned to ski at age 3 in the French Alps. In under three hours and with careful (and patient) instruction, he was able to teach two brand new skiers how to safely make their way down the mountain.

**Beginner Insider Tip: Fall. You’ll never conquer the fear of shooting down a mountain unless you’re comfortable with the concept of falling. After all, it’s only snow!**

  Getting Around

Although Silver Star Mountain features over 132 marked trails and over 13 km of skiable terrain, the mountain isn’t as difficult to navigate as a beginner might think. Not only are alpine trail maps available everywhere throughout the resort, but the runs are clearly marked along the way. A quick look online gives updated snow and grooming reports for each run, while the main information board in the Central Village provides easy viewing of any updates or changes on the mountain.

If you’re planning on riding the chairlifts, it’s recommended to pick up the POWPass or My1Pass, which allows visitors access to the lifts, Tube Town, outdoor ice rink, XC skiing and more! Without this pass, we wouldn’t have been able to fit in as many thrilling SilverStar activities as we did.

**Beginner Insider Tip: If you’re still relatively new to skiing or snowboarding, make sure to go with a buddy who knows the trails. If you’re flying solo, feel free to book a complimentary mountain tour at the front desk of your lodging for a guided tour on skis with a SilverStar staff member.**

  Fat Biking

For a mountain biking adventure unlike any other, consider renting a fat bike – complete with oversized tires of about 3.75” or more. Even novice riders can find comfort in the massive tires and reliable traction as they wind down the shared trails and take in the gorgeous surrounding views. A fat biking trail map provides guests with a number of varied runs – from easy greens, challenging blues and expert black trails.

Fat biking is not only an exhilarating ride, but it’s also a fantastic form of exercise for anyone wanting to challenge themselves and test their endurance. Beginners may choose to walk their bikes up steeper inclines, but for the most part the terrain is easily maneuverable and a quick learn!

**Beginner Insider Tip: Familiarize yourself with the gear shifts on your bike before heading out on the trails – and keep an eye out for cross country skiers at all times!**

  Tube Town

Tubing is definitely not just for kids! A hilarious activity perfect for small groups, visitors with a My1Pass can tube as much as they’d like throughout their stay on the mountain. Grab your desired tube (make sure to tap out any excess snow), and head up the Magic Carpet. Perhaps the ultimate beginner activity to warm you up for a ski lesson, Tube Town is a popular attraction for families looking for something safe and hassle-free to entertain the kids.

**Beginner Insider Tip: Wear snow pants to avoid a wet bottom, and head up during the evening to skip the lines.**

  Snowshoeing

A great option for dog owners and hiking enthusiasts, snowshoeing offers a variety of trails for all skill levels. Pick up your snowshoes and head out right from the front door of your vacation rental for an invigorating romp through Silver Star’s fluffy powder. Like all trails on the mountain, a snowshoe trail map provides a clear trail network throughout the resort. Choose from relaxing green run strolls or challenging uphill scrambles on one of two black trails before heading back to the Village for an apres-ski treat.

The Leavetown crew, lead by Sales & Marketing Coordinator Amanda, decided to challenge themselves with the Mountain View black run to reach the rustic Mountain View Cabin. Although it was definitely a climb, the view along the way was well worth it. Wildlife photographers and enthusiasts will love identifying the tracks of Silver Star’s animal residents lining the trails – just watch your footing!

**Beginner Insider Tip: Make sure to bring a headlamp with you if you’re planning on a trek in the late afternoon – the sun sets early on the mountain.**

  Pinheads Bowling

A unique Silver Star gem, Pinheads Bowling, is the world’s only ski-in, ski-out 10-pin bowling alley – a must-visit for any guest to Silver Star Mountain. Located on the ground floor of the new Firelight Lodge, the bowling alley is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. Bar service attracts the younger crowd while finger food and (of course) the bowling itself provides the perfect place for families and groups. Grown-ups can grab a pint or cocktail in the next door Final Run Bar & Bistro for a cozy romantic night while the kids challenge each other to a game. All bowling levels welcome!

  What to Eat

After adventure-packed days on the slopes, there’s nothing quite like sitting down in a warm room with friends to refuel with a satiating meal. Thankfully, Silver Star has many delicious options to choose from – Thai-Dutch fusion, contemporary Canadian, classic fine dining, and sumptuous comfort food. For us, while all the restaurants and pubs we tried were amazing, there were a few standouts that cannot go unmentioned.

Bugaboos Bakery Café: Opt for a warm breakfast croissant and latte to get you ready for the morning. If you have room, share a freshly baked cinnamon bun or apple bread pudding.

Long John’s Pub: The ultimate cozy pub in between ski runs or after a long day, Long John’s provides exactly what you’re craving. Indulge in a spiked hot chocolate or warm cider, and order a side of onion rings with the daily sandwich special.

Den Bar & Bistro: Whether you stop in to this hidden gem for a unique cocktail, fresh daily special or the delectable sticky toffee pudding, the Den provides a warm ambiance paired with unreal local fare.

**Beginner Insider Tip: If you’re craving a juicy burger after a run, head over to 1609 Restaurant on the upper level above Red Antler. Each week they feature a specialty burger that is bound to satisfy.**

A complimentary shuttle bus runs every half hour from the edge of the Inner Village around the Knoll Residential area, allowing for reliable transportation throughout the day. Guests can also easily walk anywhere in the Village in under 20 minutes – making the resort a prime vacation spot for families.   Snowbird Lodge

For a true ski-in/ski-out vacation experience right from the ski locker room, Snowbird Lodge – located in the heart of the Village – is only steps to green runs like the Comet Trail (taking you directly to the Comet Express lift) and Easy Street, with access to multiple blue, black and backcountry trails. Snowbird provides contemporary luxury in a warm ski-lodge setting, offering platinum and executive condo options for a variety of group sizes. With fantastic balconies in every unit (excluding Studios), the Lodge feature outdoors hot tubs and in-suite laundry for ultimate comfort. As the most centrally-located resort, Snowbird is ideal for families with youngsters enrolled in ski school, or for those avid skiers who want the quickest access to the slopes.

Guests staying at Snowbird Lodge can also make use of Club Snowbird, located on the ground floor of the lodge. Here, families can meet after a day on the mountain in the common room to play a game of pool, host a group board game night, or mingle with other guests and residents.   Lord Aberdeen Hotel

For a more affordable Silver Star option in the centre of the Village, Lord Aberdeen is one of the oldest buildings on the mountain. The lodgings here are rustic and cozy, reminiscent of old-school ski lodges, with all of Silver Star’s colourful charm. With a motel-like set up, units feature private entrances, private ski lockers, and direct access to the Village centre and Main Street Skiway. Vacation rentals range from 1 to 3 Bedroom Condos, each with full kitchens and balconies. While there is no front desk at Lord Aberdeen, guests can easily check-in at nearby Snowbird Lodge.

Perks of staying at Lord Aberdeen include speedy access to the Village centre, balconies that can accommodate your mountain and fat bikes, and of course – close proximity to some of Silver Star’s best pubs and restaurants. Long John’s Pub, built below the hotel, is a resident favourite, located only steps from the front door. Soak in the communal hot tub above the pub and enjoy some prime people-watching (in privacy).

  Firelight Lodge

Though it is located about a 5 minute walk from the main village, and requires crossing a car park to get to Silver Star’s restaurants and ski school, Firelight Lodge is only seconds to the slopes and the Silver Queen chairlift. Perfect for families with older children, or couples looking for a romantic retreat with a little more privacy, Firelight is the newest building at Silver Star and features updated amenities with modern decor. For a different view of the mountain, guests have fast access to the lower level Pinheads Bowling Alley – the only 10-pin ski-in/ski-out bowling alley in the world.

Firelight Lodge overlooks Brewers Pond, which transforms into an outdoor ice rink and winter wonderland during ski season. Parents can watch their kids skate from the comfort of their private balconies, or head over to Tube Town for some winter tubing. Guests at Firelight have access to private outdoor hot tubs in first floor units, and a communal hot tub facing the ice rink, along with a shared BBQ area and in-suite laundry.

  Knoll Residential Area/Creekside Condos

The Knoll Residential Area and Creekside Condos at Silver Star are comprised of individual homes spread out and separate from the Village Centre. These include the SSH Townhomes, SSH Creekside Condos and the Vance Vacation Homes, whose luxe private properties offer unique decor and are perfect for group retreats. Despite being a little further from all the action, these homes are still within close skiable access to the Silver Queen chairlift (located at the foot of Creekside) and Silver Woods chairlift – all connected via the Main Street Skiway. And like Firelight, Brewers Pond and Tube Town is just minutes away by foot (seconds by skis)! The shuttle bus also provides convenient transportation throughout the resort to the Village, and runs every half an hour.

For those looking for a private retreat surrounded by lush mountain views and featuring fireplaces, full kitchens and personal hot tubs, the homes in Knoll Residential Area and Creekside Condos may be your best choice. Visitors will immediately notice the beautiful, brightly coloured exteriors of each home – a long-standing and quirky tradition requiring owners to paint their buildings with at least 5 colours.

  Vance Creek Hotel

In the heart of the Inner Village, Vance Creek is Silver Star’s boutique hotel. Run independently from the resort, but offering fantastic vacation rental options, the property is seconds away from Main Street Skiway and all the Village has to offer in terms of coffee shops, restaurants, pubs and shops. Bright, open-plan rooms with classic wood furnishings attract guests to the hotel rooms and 1-and-2 Bedroom Suites. Enjoy a shared rooftop hot tub, conference centre, and kitchen facilities.

  Shuttle Route

Guests can hop on the complimentary shuttle beginning at the SilverStar Village Stop across from parking lot B. The following route includes stops in and around Silver Star accommodations, although not all go directly into some of the building lots.

The Best Hiking Trails to Explore in Panorama, BC

Panorama is well-known for it’s family-friendly ski runs in the winter and it’s burly technical downhill biking trails in the summer. With such famed skiing and mountain biking, sometimes it gets forgotten that Panorama also offers spectacular hiking for the beginner and expert hiker alike. Choose between easy family-friendly valley trails around the village or rugged hikes with high elevation and glacial-fed lakes atop Panorama Mountain.

Just remember that if you do walk up the mountain, be aware that bikers have right of way on certain trails

Valley Trail

Level: Easy

Distance: 3.5km

Length: 0.45 hours

Elevation Gain: 0m

The Valley Trail is a family-friendly fully paved 3.5km loop that circumnavigates the village of Panorama. Short and sweet, you can complete this easy walk in less than an hour. To begin, head clockwise from the top of the Village Gondola to avoid the more strenuous uphill sections. For those seeking more of a workout, walk counter-clockwise and follow the directions below.

Trail Details

From the bottom of the Village Gondola, cross the Toby Creek via the suspension bridge and follow the path with the tennis courts to your left. Meander along the path closest to the creek until you reach a bridge that returns you on the side that you started on. You might catch people floating on an inflatable raft down the rushing whitewater of Toby Creek. Follow the trail along the creek before reaching the base of a series of switchbacks through dense forestry.

Head up the switchbacks, gain a little elevation and pass through the beautiful green fairways of Greywolf Golf Course where you can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, especially Monument Peak. Keep your eyes peeled for bears or other wildlife on the green – but remember to keep your distance! The trail cuts through Greywolf Drive and makes its way to the base of the ski slopes of Panorama Mountain. Wander past the Sunbird chairlift, and walk underneath the Toby chairlift before winding around the Mile 1 Express chairlift to reach the Village Gondola.

This trail begins right in the centre of Panorama at the Village Gondola.

  Cox Creek Trail

Panorama Mountain Resort

  Level: Easy

Distance: 3.5km

Length: 1-1.25 hours

Elevation Loss: 375m

Cox Creek trail is an easy downhill hike that offers incredible mountain vista views, numerous opportunities to some wildlife and finishes in the Upper Village – where you can reward yourself with a rest and a drink!

Trail Details

From the top of the Mile 1 Express chairlift, take a left and follow the start of the biking trails. Go past the beginning of the Crazytrain trail, take a right at the fork with Dog Town and ascend uphill. The trail winds through the forest on a narrow steep path that twists in between towering pine trees. At the next fork, turn left to stay on the Cox Creek Trail and follow the sound of water splashing on the rocks to make your way to Cox Creek. Cross the creek and follow it downstream briefly before the trail gains elevation again.

The trail pops out of the woods onto the Founders’ Ridge skiing area. Stop, take a breath, look west and enjoy the majestic view of Monument Peak in the background. If you’re lucky, you might see some wildlife grazing on the open grassy slopes. The trail carries on past the Ostrander ski run, onto the roadway, forks left and then leads you onto a number of switchbacks down the hillside. As you reach the end of the switchbacks, the trail takes a sharp right to pass a water reservoir and then forks to the left. As you approach to join the biking trail called Lookout, you must watch for bikers as they have right of way. Follow the gentle switchbacks all the way back to the village.

Cox Creek Trail begins from the top of the Mile 1 Express chairlift.

Summit Trail

Level: Moderate/Difficult

Distance: 4.8km

Length: 2-3 hours

Elevation Gain: 930m

This trail takes hikers to the summit of Panorama Mountain Resort which offers stunning panoramic vistas of the Canadian Rockies and is a fantastic way to access other mountains in the area including: Mt. Goldie, Mt Taynton as well as a number of others peaks all connected by saddleback ridges. You could walk for days and feel like you’re on top of the world!

Trail Details

This trail can begin at the base of the Mile 1 Quad Chairlift or at the top. If you start at the bottom, you will add 1.6km distance, 369m elevation gain and can enjoy that extra feeling of satisfaction that you hiked Panorama Mountain from the very bottom. As you reach the top of the chairlift, take the uppermost fork that goes underneath the Champagne Express chairlift. After passing the top of the Sunbird, follow the wide service road all the way to the summit. For those who don’t have very good navigation skills, this is a great hike that you won’t get lost on.

The road weaves up the mountain to the top of the Champagne chairlift using the Rollercoaster, Millennium and World Cup Way ski runs. Once you reach the top of the Champagne chairlift for the final ascent, you can either go directly up the steep incline of the Top of the World ski run or head right and follow the ‘Easiest Way Down’ blue sign nailed to a tree. This trail follows a long but shallow part of the Getmedown biking trail and then the service road. The waving Canadian Flag at the summit is a warm welcome to the top.

Summit Trail begins at the base of Panorama Mountain.

  Jumbo Pass

Destination BC/Dave Heath

  Level: Moderate

Distance: 12.2km roundtrip (or 6.1km to the Cabin)

Length: 4-5 hours

Elevation Gain: 600m (2300m – elevation at the top)

Jumbo Pass is a 6.1km moderate hike that begins in a logged area, weaves up the mountain through sub-alpine forest along easy switchbacks. You’ll pop out of the forest onto a beautiful pass which offers spectacular views of jagged peaks, colorful wildflowers and pristine alpine lakes.

Trail Details

The trail begins along the ski road on the left with the trailhead very clearly marked. After 1km the trail makes its way into a dense, cool forest and then opens out onto a small boulder field. You will quickly gain 300m elevation, reach a steep alpine creek with a square orange marker nailed to a tree that indicates a sharp right turn across the creek. From here, the cliffs of Bastille Mountain stand tall in the distance to your left. At 4km, the trees will become sparse and open out onto spectacular subalpine meadows where stunning wildflowers splash colour on the vast greenery ahead. This is the breathtaking Jumbo Pass.

At 5.2km, keep on the well-travelled trail (if it is unclear, keep to the right fork) and follow the signs to the hut just 0.9km away. For those after panoramic views, follow the inviting ridge line that leads to Mount Monica. The first peak is only a couple of minutes away and provides incredible views of Bastille Mountain, Starbird Glacier and Jumbo Mountain.

Directions:

From Panorama, turn left up Toby Creek Road which quickly turns to gravel. Continue along this gravel road for 18.8km, cross the bridge over Jumbo Creek and then turn right for Jumbo Creek Forest Service Road. Due to the high clearance needed and often muddy conditions, a 4×4 is recommended for the next part of the drive. With many logging roads branching off, follow the most obvious well-driven logging road. Once you are about 25km from Panorama, cross the bridge to the south side of Jumbo Creek. After 7km (14km up Jumbo Creek Forest Service Road), cross the final bridge. After another 2km, between 15km and 16km along Jumbo Creek FSR signs and just before a bridge, a marked skid road leads off to the left for the Jumbo Pass trail.

  Lake of the Hanging Glacier

This late summer season hike offers a rewarding end destination. Located in a cirque just below the Jumbo Glacier and Commander Glacier in the Purcell Mountains, the Lake of the Hanging Glacier is a stunning turquoise alpine lake surrounded by jagged snow-capped peaks. During this hike, you’ll often see mountain goats wandering around the area munching the vegetation.

Trail Details

With the trail being popular, it is easy to see where it begins just on the right of the Horsethief Forest Service Road. The trail ascends into a lush, dense forest through an old cut block. Pass over Hellroaring Creek via the steel deck to re-enter the forest. At 3km, the trail leads downwards to a horse trail junction. Turn left and follow the footway that leads you to a metal bridge traversing Horsethief Creek. The trail winds through the forest then ascends via switchbacks alongside cascading waterfalls and a running creek that flows from the Lake of the Hanging Glacier.

At 6.4km, use the two-log bridge to cross over a small creek into an area that has been previously covby a rockslide. Make your way across the debris and follow the trail on the right side of the creek. As you climb up, you’ll pass through beautiful alpine meadows full of colourful wildflowers, a campsite and an outhouse before a wide plain of rocks marks the north end of the lake. The vivid blue of the Lake of the Hanging Glacier is surrounded by majestic mountains – The Commander Mountain to left, The Lieutenants in the middle and the Glacier Dome to the right – and the Jumbo Glacier.

Directions:

4WD is recommended to reach this trailhead. From Panorama, drive 18km towards Invermere on Toby Creek Road. Just before the Toby Bridge, turn left toward Wilmer. Drive through Wilmer to Westside Road and then pass over Horsethief and Forster creeks. After 10km of dirt road driving, you will reach a 4-way intersection where you turn left onto Horsethief Forest Service Road. At the 13km marker on the Horsethief FSR, stay left to continue following the main road. The trailhead to the Lake of the Hanging Glacier is just after the 49km marker (approximately 1.25 hours from Panorama).

Top 5 Dog-Friendly Beaches in Whistler, BC

During the summer months, a day trip to the beach on the weekend or after work may be your top priority. For dog owners, it’s especially important – but often tricky – to map out all the dog friendly and designated off-leash beaches in your area. After all, for many pups, a dip in the ocean or a refreshing lake swim is just what they need to cool off on a hot day. Thankfully, we’ve assembled our top 5 favourite lakefront and oceanside spots in Whistler, BC that allow you – and your pooch – all the beach freedom you need.

**It’s important to note that aside from designated off-leash areas, dogs are not permitted on public beaches or playgrounds in Whistler, and must be leashed at all times while in the vicinity of those locations.**

  1. Blueberry Park

Blueberry Park may be one of Whistler’s best hidden gems, located on Alta Lake and accessed via the Blueberry Trail, which extends from one end of the forest to the other. Three public piers are accessible at the edge of the park, and have become a landing stop (or launching pad) for many dogs and their owners. Because this park is very remote – some locals are even unaware of it – dogs can run wild through the natural terrain. Owners can lounge on the pier in the afternoon sun or swim with their four-legged companions. Unlike many other “dog-friendly” beaches and parks in the area, your dog will truly have free range of the entire park.

Directions

Blueberry Trail can begin at either the North or South end of Blueberry Beach Park. From the North end, the trail can be reached from Crabapple Drive – which is slightly more difficult to find. It is located only an 8 minute drive from downtown Whistler, off of Lorimer Road to the North, and onto Crabapple Drive to the left.

Visitors can find easier entry from the Alta Vista side of the park at the end of St. Anton Way – which tends to be the popular option, since this side of Alta Lake is home to the three public piers. This is accessed from the Sea-to-Sky Highway, and is only a 5 minute drive from downtown Whistler.

  2. Alpha “Arfa” Lake Park

For dog owners looking to mingle with locals and their pups, Alpha Lake Park – or “Arfa” as it is widely known in the area – may be your best bet. Created as an extension to Alpha Lake Park’s designated off-leash area, Arfa Park is separate from the Valley Trail (though this is also dog-friendly) that runs through the rest of the park, and provides dogs with plenty of open space in a large field, as well as their very own dock. Owners will also be pleased to have quick access to the main park’s amenities, which include washrooms, water fountains, picnic tables, a pier and a children’s area.

Directions

This large, grassy dog-friendly space is located in between the tennis courts and the lake at Alpha Lake Park. It is located in the Whistler Creek region, and is only 5km from the town centre. Take the Sea-to-Sky Highway southbound, turn right onto Taylor Way, and another right on Lake Placid Road where you can find free daytime parking.

  3. Barking Bay at Rainbow Park

Rainbow Park offers not only an incredible (and easily accessible) beachfront for visitors and locals, but dogs too have their own designated off-leash area. The main park itself is one of Whistler’s most popular swimming beaches, as well as one of the best southern-facing spots to soak in the sun. Dog owners are definitely not excluded from the fun, and in addition to a small grassy off-leash lawn, are provided with a dedicated swimming dock for dogs. This park is called “Barking Bay,” and can be accessed from the main beach – although owners should be aware that all dogs must be leashed as they pass through Rainbow Park between 10am and 8pm.

Directions

About a 15 minute drive from Whistler Village, Barking Bay is located off both ends of the Sea-to-Sky Highway. If heading from the North, take a left on Alpine Way and another left onto Rainbow Drive. This will turn into Alta Lake Road, where the park entrance will be on your left.

  4. Brohm Lake

Not technically in Whistler but a notable dog-friendly beach option in the area is Brohm Lake in nearby Squamish, BC. About a 30 minutes drive out from the Village, Brohm Lake is a perfect stopover for visitors travelling from Vancouver on their way north up the mountain (or on the return trip back south). The lake is located at the centre of a number of lush green trails that can be spotted from the Sea-to-Sky Highway. You can choose to take different loops around the water for a heftier hike, or settle in along the rocky waterfront. Your dog is free to explore, swim or float with you as you enjoy the surrounding mountain views.

Directions

From Squamish townsite, head north onto the Sea-to-Sky Highway for approximately 15km. Turn left and you will find the Brohm Lake Recreational Site with parking and washrooms. From here, follow the trail signs (and mind your step) as you make your way down the rocky slope to the water.

  5. Canine Cove at Lost Lake Park

Lost Lake is only an 8 minute drive from Whistler Village to the northeast, and is a prime beach location for locals and visitors due to its busy concession stand, BBQ stand, washrooms and docks. Unfortunately, at Lost Lake Beach overall, dogs are not permitted. Thankfully, “Canine Cove” has become the designated off-leash area only 400m north of the beach, and here they can roam free. The park is easily accessed from the Valley Trail, only 15 minutes walking distance from town, and free shuttles runs there from the Village. Because of this, there is no parking available, and during the winter months the park is closed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Directions

Turn right onto Blackcomb Way from the Village and follow the road north until you reach Lost Lake Road. Take a left here, and continue for 550m until you reach the lake entry on your left. Keep in mind that there is no parking available, so you may wish to be dropped off, take the free summer shuttle, or walk along the Valley Trail.
