It was the vibe of a lonely person he got from her – though if it was by choice or just happened to be that way was something he neither knew nor really cared to find out. What mattered was simply that she was a customer at Sojijro’s new cafe, and that she was rather engrossed in her curry.
Sojiro moves around to pour another cup of coffee, eyeing her almost empty plate. He sighed, settling on being nice as he wandered back around behind the counter. “I’ll give you another serving at half price if you’re really that hungry. But you have to promote me.”
Halfway a joke, that last bit. He did mean it about giving her another serving half off though – it did his heart a little bit of good to see someone else enjoy the curry that much. If she was actually enjoying it. This woman was a little bit hard to read.

Big eyes, the threat of tears (or at least frustration) and the air of being lost.
This girl reminded him of Futaba when he had first taken her in. She was scared, and thin and had little trust for just about anything or anyone but herself and things that she was certain wouldn’t harm her – like TV and figures.
At least, this was the way that Sojiro rationalized the little pang in his chest when he saw the girl trying to find her way through the city, trying to look for something. Maybe he was just getting sentimental, losing that rough edge he claimed he had (but never really did).
“Hey, kid. What exactly are you looking for? I have a pretty good sense of direction, so I could point you in the right way.” He calls to her from a safe enough distance – not too close to seem like a creep, or too far for it to feel like taunting or heckling. “Or you could just keep going. I’ll turn around and walk the other way if you don’t want my help. I’m sure someone else will be around.” It sounded halfway to dismissive, but really he was trying to keep from sounding too creepy. Yeah, he was a well-intentioned adult, but plenty of seedy people had ruined the simplicity of an adult offering assistance to a kid. And Sojiro had no radar for how skittish she was.

There seemed to be a lot of deliberation with every sip of the coffee he took. As if he was considering something, as if he was comparing something in his head. Which it was very possible the man was. It had become so noticeable and distracting, even, that Sojiro was watching him over the top of his newspaper.
“Mind telling me what you’re thinking about? If you want a full taste test, I have plenty of brews. Tell me what you’re looking for, and I’ll see if I can make it better than your favorite coffee in town.”

He wasn’t one to judge, but the kid had been sitting with an empty cup of coffee for about an hour and hadn’t even called to Sojiro for anything else. An hour. For that matter, he wasn’t even sure the kid had finished drinking it in the first place! He was just sitting, staring into space with his elbow on the table and chin in his hand.
Yusuke would probably like a picture of that. The shop keeper thought, imagining the boy framing the scene with his fingers as he had the tendency to do.
Standoffish nature finally beaten off by the need to keep this restaurant going, Sojiro stepped out from behind the counter and walked to hover beside the boy’s booth.
“Would you like a refill? Or to try a different blend?”

God damn, he was getting old. Here he had just been walking and exploring town for a while and needed (wanted) to take a rest on a park bench, and this girl was rushing from one whole side of the park to the other without so much as breaking a sweat. What was she doing or looking for anyway? Was she just exercising? Was she frolicking and enjoying the day? Whatever she was doing, just watching it made him feel tired. So he set his head in his hands for a moment, and heaved a sigh.
And then somebody plunked down on the bench next to him. Knowing just who it could be, he lifted his head and looked at the girl, her bright eyes and expression.
“I think I’d die if my kid was like you.” He comments dryly, for once happy about Futaba’s low-energy tendencies.

In absolutely no part of his brain could Sojiro even begin to fathom why this girl was wearing what she was and walking into a coffee shop in the middle of the day. Yes, plenty of strange things had happened of late, but this? This was pretty ridiculous.
Wait, was she one of those cosplayers? This wasn’t Akihabara, this was far from it! Sojiro resisted the urge to pinch his brow, and settled for one of his customer-friendly half-smiles.
“Can I help you miss? I’ve got coffee and curry, and I’m sure I could find some sunscreen if you feel like you’re getting burned.” That last part was a joke. He definitely didn’t have sunscreen here. He couldn’t even remember the last time he bought some, considering he always covered up and Futaba never left the house.

Well, well. That was one familiar face that Sojiro was never expecting again. He had heard from Futaba what had happened – seen her expression when she talked about the inside of Shido’s head, the two brown-haired boys and their guns. He heard her stop a moment, dwell on the words she had to say to her companions.
He made her some extra-special curry that night, and even watched some strange movie about a giant bug rampaging in Tokyo. One from when he was a kid. At least it had been a movie though – not another episode of Featherman (the new ones just weren’t like the old ones he grew up with).
“Looks like you’re here too.” Sojiro his bets to keep the creeping hint of disappointment in the kid out of his voice – and failed at keeping the pity out of it. “Well, are you here for what you usually drink? I’m making it all the same way as I did in LeBlanc.”
