Get What You Want - JJAMZ
They were basically best friends, Z explained, they used to go out all the time, singing karaoke and drinking their way through LA’s bars. “And one time we were out, and we were at a bar with karaoke, and the line was too long for us to sing, and no girls were talking to us.” So they went home, wrote a song, and made a band. JJAMZ is the initials of the people who make it up: James Valentine, from Maroon 5, Jason Boesel, from Rilo Kiley & Conor Oberst’s backing bands, Alex Greenwald, from Phantom Planet, Michael Runion, a solo artist, and Z. The origin story is, all on its own, pretty sexy in the imagery it conjures up: the gang of lads, prowling around the bars, trying to sing, annoyed that “there were no skirts to chase”, and Z the bad boy in the centre. It’s an image she quietly lines up for herself when it comes to JJAMZ - gone is the furious wronged woman of Release Me, and in her place Z has deep red lipstick, a longer, sea-tousled hairstyle, and an unapologetically sexual (and possessive) approach. JJAMZ has a sexy vibe, not a sleazy one, but Z alone in the band sometimes walks the line. JJAMZ itself is, she says repeatedly, the mistress, versus the committed relationships they were all in with the rest of their bands. And “you always like your mistress more than you like your wife,” Z says, smiling. “She’ll do everything that your wife won’t do.”
It’s interesting that it’s playing in a band of boys that Z seems more determined to become some sort of romantic hero. Not in the sense of being nice, but rather being the sexual and subversive centre of the group, the one who has the banter with the audience, the one who becomes the focal point of interviews and performances alike. In JJAMZ, Z uses sex appeal in a way that is similar to male performers like Mick Jagger or even David Bowie, where the allure lies not so much in what you can do to them, but what they’re going to do to you. It’s an aggressive, demanding sort of flirtation that is very obviously about being the centre of attention in a room, and Z forms very clear targets.
Not just in the “Never Enough” video, not only in the stories of chasing skirts or the deliberate inclusion of herself amongst her (presumably) heterosexual male bandmates, not just in the sexual language in which Z talks about JJAMZ. There’s an aspect of queerness in the way Z operates within JJAMZ that wasn’t so present within The Like, a new element that is  there in several small aspects: the way she focuses more on her own drinking, her own ‘laddish’ behaviour, the slow increase of profanity she uses (from professing that cunt is her favourite swear word to the delighted declaration that behind their bands backs, JJAMZ are all just “fucking the shit out of the mistress”), and particularly her stage persona.
And, notably, most of this energy, whether it be flirtatious or furiously pissed off, is focused on girls: “I’m glad it’s all girls in the front row, since I know you can probably see up my skirt,” she announces at one show; at another, when an idiot was tweeting about Z’s skirts being too short and how maybe there was a “guess what colour” contest for her underwear, Z snapped back, “they’re black”. In another interview, she demands, “When are people going to start throwing roses and panties, is my question? … I want people to throw them at us so badly… and bras." It’s not enough to have fans - Z seems to want the devoted, obsessed, and implicitly female attention that male rockstars in their peak get.
It’s a pretty clear move that Z makes; having firmly centred the spotlight on herself in the days of The Like, she is now able to shift within it and take on the attitudes of male sexual aggression that make up an implicit part of the frontman’s appeal. Importantly, though, Z does it without once rescinding her femininity. She is often heard to boast that she doesn’t even own a pair of pants, and she openly obsesses over mini-dresses and heels. She doesn’t ever fall into the ‘one of the boys’ trap, and is openly dismissive and disdainful of men rather than trying to join the team: “The big differences [to The Like] are that guys really just talk about balls all day. All day. I had no idea.” There’s obviously a lot more to JJAMZ and to Z’s presence within it beside this shift, and certainly you could argue that I’m deliberately seeing my own narrative here (in which case, yeah, maybe, but I think the signs are there and the clues Z leaves are what I find so fascinating about her as an artist). It’s a newly collaborative project for her, with interesting insights into her artistic approach; it also signals a new aesthetic not just fashion-wise, but with a definite change in location. The Like, while made up of Californian girls and based in LA, was centred more in a time than a place, but JJAMZ is in love in and with LA. The video for “Never Enough” is “LA as fuck”, and though Z has never been shy about her love for the city she grew up in, JJAMZ gives her a vehicle for showcasing and publicly adoring her city in a way that is compelling and richly detailed. But this is what I want to focus on, as we start to think about JJAMZ: Z putting her guitar away, for now, taking up the microphone to prowl around on stage, saunter her way up to her bandmates, and then grin down at the crowd, holding them in the palm of her hand. Speculating, interested. Smiling.

What fucks me up about the Darren Wilson fundraiser is that he hasn’t been charged with a crime. He doesn’t have to hire a lawyer. He’s on paid leave, so he’s not losing wages. This is not covering his expenses, because he doesn’t have any additional expenses. This is a reward. He’s getting a $250,000 reward for murdering an unarmed black kid.
HE HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. MIKE REACHED FOR HIS GUN. HIS FRIEND THAT WAS WITH HIM EVEN ADMITTED THAT HE LIED ABOUT THE COP JUST RANDOMLY SHOOTING HIM AND CONFIRMED THAT THEY ROBBED THE STORE. SELF DEFESE.
None of this is true. This is how good the Ferguson PD’s smear campaign has been. Not one sentence here is accurate. Let’s break this down:
"HE HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL." Michael Brown’s autopsy showed no sign of struggle. The picture of the CT scan that’s being passed around to show that Wilson had an orbital blowout fracture is actually from 2008 from the University of Iowa, and a right-wing pundit photoshopped out the date and hospital info.
"MIKE REACHED FOR HIS GUN." Officer Wilson’s story is that the first shot that went off was an accidental discharge while they were fighting over the gun. However. there was no gunpowder residue on Mike Brown, meaning that he was absolutely not holding the gun when it went off and furthermore that he was not even that close. He was fired on from a distance.
"HIS FRIEND THAT WAS WITH HIM EVEN ADMITTED THAT HE LIED ABOUT THE COP JUST RANDOMLY SHOOTING HIM AND CONFIRMED THAT THEY ROBBED THE STORE." This is actually a compound lie, which is kind of impressive. His friend, Dorian Johnson, did not say that. His lawyer said they were together in the convenience store, the police said there was a robbery, and the media put those two statements next to each other to imply a statement was made that never was. Johnson isn’t being charged with anything because the Ferguson PD “determined he committed no crime." The Ferguson PD also admitted Officer Wilson didn’t know about the scuffle at the convenience store before he stopped Brown and Johnson. You may be wondering why I say scuffle instead of robbery. That’s because there wasn’t one: the owners of the store didn’t call the police and video shows Brown paying for the cigarillos! The clerk confronted Brown about reaching across the counter instead of waiting for him to hand over the cigarillos, he put his hand on Brown, and Brown pushed him. Yes, he pushed him too hard, but the clerk apparently didn’t care enough to call the police. The police were called by another customer in the store, who apparently didn’t know what was actually happening.
"SELF DEFESE." The autopsy shows that he was shot on the inside of his arm, meaning his hands were up, and the top of his head, meaning that, since Brown was 6’4”, either he was on his knees or the officer was 8’ tall. The officer was not 8’ tall.
The evidence clearly shows that Officer Wilson, who had no idea of the not-actually-a-robbery, executed the unarmed Mike Brown while he was on his knees with his hands in the air. Just like all of the eyewitnesses said (except for “Josie,” who turned out not to be real).
But the Ferguson PD’s already tainted public opinion. They’ve spread so many lies so effectively that no amount of evidence will bring justice. Your ignorance here is proof of just how effective it’s been.

"Pop stars traffic in symbology, so when white girls like Miley, Katy, and Lily Allen hide behind the claim that they just didn’t know any better, it seems insufficient. Maybe they didn’t, but somebody around them at some point should have. Which is why it felt tone-deaf when Taylor Swift put out a music video for her new single that featured a couple of scenes in which she used black dancers as props to offset her own clueless whiteness."
(…)
"Into this humid cultural climate strolls Nicki Minaj, whose new video for “Anaconda” isn’t technically a response video to “Shake It Off,” but might as well be. The “Anaconda” video is an extremely self-aware deconstruction of twerking as a trend. Nicki inverts the Miley paradigm, putting her own body front-and-center and surrounding herself with dancers of all races. “Anaconda” turns Nicki’s butt into a literal force of nature, causing earthquakes in a jungle setting. After parodying the idea of exoticism by opening on a jungle scene, she shifts into a workout setup with comically small weights. All of these setups make the same point: Nicki’s body is the modern ideal. And because Nicki is spitting rapid-fire jokes the whole time she is onscreen, it’s impossible to feel like she’s been reduced to a mere body."

Inside Ferguson With Photographers From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“When all the world’s media leaves, this is still our neighborhood,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s director of photography Lynden Steele recently told TIME. “We have to work knowing that what we do now will come back to us a month from now. We have to be able to stand by what we’re doing now because we’re going to be in that neighborhood weeks, months, years from now.”
Over the past few weeks, the journalists at the Post-Dispatch, created by Joseph Pulitzer in 1878 from a merger of the St. Louis Dispatch and the St. Louis Evening Post, have been covering a national story unfolding on their doorstep. In the wake of Ferguson, Mo., police officer Darren Wilson’s fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager named Michael Brown on Aug. 9, and the turbulent protests that followed, the paper’s staff photographers went to work—and they haven’t stopped.

Note
The kid in Ferguson robbed a store. The cop noticed he matched suspect description and confronted him. The kid rushed the cop, and the cop shot him- normal, procedural action. And not all of the protestors are peaceful. This isn't cops vs. the town. Yes, it's awful and yes there's alleged brutality, but the coverage on tumblr has been awful and biased
Legit the only reason people give a shit about ferguson is because a white cop shot a black kid. White cops can shoot white people and black cops can shoot black people, but the second a white shoots a black, it’s an uproar. THATS why racism remains an issue
This is it kids, the day has come. The day I meet the biggest idiot alive.
Have you been paying literally any attention? Like, not even to start with your horribly bigoted and anti black racist comments in these asks, but “the kid” who was extrajudicially executed by a police officer had a name. His name was Michael Brown, and the pig who killed him was Darren Wilson.
Here’s a video account by Michael Brown’s friend, the young man who was walking with Michael when the execution happened.
His account stated that Michael was shot several times and that he got down on his knees and put his hands up when Wilson started pursuing him. Michael’s autopsies fit the account.
Several other eyewitness accounts say THE EXACT SAME THING.
Michael was 6’4” and the only possible way that he could have been shot in the top of his head and have the bullet exit out the back of his neck is if he were kneeling.
And whether or not Michael stole anything (which, I believe, was debunked, but I may be wrong), Darren Wilson did not know that Michael was supposedly tied to a robbery.
Not even to mention that petty theft is in no way punishable with unlawful execution.
Feguson, Missouri is in a police state. 75% of Ferguson is a black population and almost none of the police force has black officers. The police are terrorising Ferguson. They have removed their IDs and badges, which is LITERALLY illegal. They shot peaceful protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets, and wooden pellets. I don’t think I have any links for this one, but they’ve repeatedly, pointlessly, and unlawfully arrested reporters in the area.
They’ve also threatened to shoot the Ferguson livestream operator. They have spent days trying to get the protesters to turn off their phones and stop uploading to media what they’re doing.
And you want to know the real reason people are making a big deal about, in your words, “a white shooting a black”?
Because it happens all the fucking time.
I am a white person, so while it is not my place to stand up and talk about anti black racism, it’s pretty clear that you’re a goddamn idiot and you need to stay in your fucking lane.
Racism continues to be an issue because of bigoted dumbarses like you.
