Gary, color film image, 2019, by Howie Stier

“ I AM... proposes a new way to further overcome the relative uselessness or ineffectiveness of prejudgment. It proposes to reveal through the lens of a multitude of photographers from various parts of the globe what can be possible in the growing dispersion and development of the human race, images that transcend boundaries and belief systems”

Ami Sioux’s Pics From The Road
Zebulon, the brilliant music lounge that escaped toxic Williamsburg, Brooklyn to reopen in our LA (the creative capital of the planet) continues to make culture happen; at their nifty holiday art market we ran into accomplished shooter Ami SIoux who flaunts her understated, profoundly cosmopolitan work in a new book compiling decades of her stylish editorial photography

Kellisimone Waits -
“Astrokitties: The Arrival” at Tieken Gallery LA
“Step right up! Step right up, step right up, Everyone's a winner, bargains galore That's right, you too can be the proud owner ....” of one or all of the modest sized pieces artist Kellisimone Waits- painter daughter of LA’s hipster number one, the influential and sober Tom Waits- has now on display at LA’s Tieken Gallery. The cloyingly colored images of a menacing kitty-woman engaged in scenes of adult drama reminded of the moment, hurtling downtown seated on a cramped 2 express across from a Japanese woman of indeterminate age, dressed head to toe in nothing that wasn’t Hello Kitty branded, when the mystery of that consumer cult was revealed to us. Leaning over, we straight up asked “you’re no tween or teen, so what’s the infatuation?” and her instant reply, with no tinge of irony was “Kitty is perfect, obedient and beautiful.” Which informs us that Ms. Waits' new show presents a refreshing anti-Hello-Kitty feminine gaze, to embrace the artworld jargon of the moment. After chatting with artist-impresario Fred Teiken in his newly opened basement hideout bar, we urged a well regarded, often colorfully coiffed and ever prolific art-cricket to step in; “I’d rather not burn out my eyeballs” was his instant reply. Ouch. Now the Legman is nothing if not critical, but we don’t talk that kind of talk, plus our eyeballs have the strength to endure. These solidly hand crafted pieces seem a fair response to the slick aesthetic of LA’s ubiquitous “Pop Surrealism” which coincidentally reached a swollen, out-sized apogee in the massive Alex-Israel-scaled works of that genre shown at the recently defunct and now sorely missed Esacalante Gallery down the Chun King Road from this enjoyable show..
