Leilani was the kind of woman Maya can only hope of being. She was driven, optimistic, and an overall ray of light. And Maya often found herself overly jealous in the face of someone else’s light no matter who it was. But it was different with Leilani. For once, Maya didn’t feel that pang of sudden jealousy when around her, because her light and happy personality was just too infectious. Even now, Maya can feel her already good mood improving.
“Oh my God, speaking of, I was playing that game where you shoot hoops and you won’t believe how bad I was. I swear at one point the ball like, swerved mid-air and completely missed the basket by an embarrassing amount. It was horrendous and all the kids were laughing at me and rightfully so.” When they’re back on the topic of tattoos, Maya’s lips purse in thought. Her eyes wander, attempting to think of something they can get. “Well, the best tattoos are the ones that mean something to you. Something timeless that you know you’ll never get tired of. My first was this one,” She begins, reaching up to pull her sweater down to reveal her tattoo, the words ‘MORE WONDER’ in small uppercase letters near her right collarbone. “This is from an essay I wrote for English class during my senior year where I talked about wanting to be more adventurous, to seek wonder. And that meant something to me.” She nods to Leilani, “So, that’s a good place to start. What means something to you that you’d want on you forever?”
As she listened to Maya explain her experience with one of the festival games, Lani ordered a malibu pineapple from the bartender. “Oh I bet those kids were roasting you. It’s okay though. Maybe you’ll run into someone special who will win a few prizes for you and make this whole thing worth it.” She winked, before perking up with a devious smile as another thought came to mind. “Or you can have a little rollercoaster moment à la Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg in that one 90s movie.” She was probably being a bit too starry-eyed but festivals always brought those date clichés to mind for her. It was too bad she didn’t have a date this year.
“That work is really beautiful.” She complimented, taking in the tattoo on her friend’s collarbone. Lani had a lot of things that meant a lot of her. Her salon, her family, her friends, but those were way too many things to get tattooed. If she was being honest with herself, the first thing that came to mind was her love for music. “I’d want something maybe whimsical, but true to me. I could see myself getting a music note or maybe a song lyric, but like a really short lyric.”

She was wandering around enjoying the ambiance that the festival produced. Everyone just seemed to be having the time of their life. She particularly loved seeing the faces of the smiling children as they ran all around. Gosh, kids really were so cute. She was brought out of her thoughts when she realized someone was speaking to her.
“Oh hey! I did see it. That performance was kickass! You guys can really work the crowd.” Lani complimented, giving him a smile. Music would forever hold a special place in her heart and it was always after seeing amazing performances like his band’s that she really missed it. “Unfortunately, I did not get one. Some other lucky people did. But I could be just as lucky if you take a selfie with me?” She was playing it up a teensy bit but t he just seemed so happy and proud that she wanted to keep it going.
𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫: open to all ! @voicenotesstarters 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: anywhere around the parton festival, sometime after fatal attraction’s set !
currently, jay’s on cloud nine — the buzz from the adrenaline mixing in nicely with the celebratory drinks still in hand… plus whatever that guy offered him earlier settling into his system. nothing could deflate his ego today, it’s simply not possible.
which is why he has no shame in grabbing the attention of anyone he thinks he recognises.
“ hey, did you see it ? did you see me ? ” on stage he means, during fatal attraction’s faultless performance where he’s pretty sure he just played the best bass of his life… AND looked so fucking cool doing it. this is basically celebrity status confirmed. “ i’m tryin’ to find whoever caught my picks — was it you, didja get one ? ”

“So far it’s pretty on par with last year’s to be honest. I highly recommend stopping by Miss Joanne’s to get one of her lovely bouquets. She has a wonderful collection during this time of year.” Leilani always found it wonderful to meet new people. She loved this town and it was always easy for her to brag about all the wonderful things it had to offer.
It’d been nearly a year in this tiny town, and the feeling of it being eerily quaint wasn’t lost on her. Ella didn’t know if she was craving bigger and better things, or if she just didn’t know how to act when the world wasn’t flying past her on hyperdrive. “So how does this compare to past years? This is my first Parton Fest.” An attempt at a friendly smile followed, the antithesis of the ‘don’t talk to anyone’ mentality that she’d adopted in New York City. open @voicenotesstarters

It could be hard sometimes to carve out time for herself as an owner of a business, but Leilani always made it a point keep close with the people she loved and Maya was always an absolute gem to be around. A smile automatically appeared on her face as she heard the other woman call her name. “Hey Maya!” She smiled, taking a seat at the bar. “I’m having so much fun. I probably spent way too much money trying to win at those games.” She laughed.
“Yeah, well maybe next time.” She commented, though she didn’t really perform in public anymore. She hasn’t done so in years, choosing to focus on the career she chose and not the dream she let slip away. “Oh God,” she dramatically sighed at the mention of tattoos. “Needles in your skin? No thank you. Also what would we be getting? It would have to be something perfect for me to willingly go through such pain.”
starter for : @leilanimorton. location : bee sting bar. event : parton fest.
After downing a couple drinks, Maya was finally beginning to feel a little looser and in the best way. Thankfully, she wasn’t the kind of drunk that started doing splits and cartwheels before busting her ass. No, she was usually just giggly and more open for conversation. In some way, drinking allows her social battery to become close to nonexistent for a time.
“Lani!” She calls out as the other woman appears from the bar’s entrance. Maya waves her over, patting the spot beside her, signaling for Leilani to sit. “Are you enjoying the festivities so far? I was just telling the bartender how you should’ve signed up to perform.” She chuckles, “I was also talking about how I’m still trying to convince you to get a tattoo with me.”

SONG CHARACTER IS BASED ON: Put Your Records On by Corinne Rae Bailey
FULL NAME: Leilani Morton
NICKNAMES: Lani, Lei
DATE OF BIRTH: September 3, 1986
AGE: 35
GENDER: Ciswoman
PRONOUNS: she/her
OCCUPATION: Owner of Red Flush Salon
FACECLAIM: Amber Riley
HOW LONG THEY’VE BEEN IN PARTON: All her life
A SECRET OF THEIRS: She was offered a record deal in her 20s but turned it down out of fear of failure.
HEADCANONS
Small town girl with a big heart. Often seen as being naive at her big age and too happy. She was an absolute darling to most, but some saw her as an annoyance. She took it all with a grain of salt, never letting the smile fall from her face. She wont let anybody else dictate her emotions. She lives her life carefree and open.
She was gifted with a very beautiful singing voice. She enjoyed music and any excuse to perform. Everyone expected her to be this big famous singer but she took her life in a different direction. Secretly, she did have the opportunity to pursue a career but the fear of failing after all the years of people expecting it from her scared her. It was better to never try than to try and fail, at least that’s how she felt at the time. She let her fear stop her from pursuing her dreams and as she grows older she has to come to grips with it.
She has been doing hair from a young age. The amount of Barbies her parents had to buy her as she cut, dyed, and fried their hair was ridiculous. It was all for a reason though because she truly enjoyed doing hair. It was a second dream of hers and after going through the proper education and getting her licenses, it led her to opening up Red Flush Salon.
She often goes into NYC to sing at open mics and enjoy the nightlife. She also has a group of friends in town she jams with and they have their own open nights that she likes to host at her place in her massive living room.
She’s pretty open with her emotions and she’s a people pleaser. Falls a little bit in love with everyone who shares a piece of themselves with her. She could be a big kid at times but often played the mom friend always worried about the ones she loved. She will bend over backwards to make sure they’re okay.
Has a soft spot for lost souls. Will extend her hand to help anyone and offer them encouragement. She tries to see the good in everyone.
