SHIRLEY - VISIONS OF REALITY (93', Austria, 2013) Director: GUSTAV DEUTSCH
"An impressive cinematic recreation of images and moods for Hopper cognoscenti, it more controversially puts the American realist's work in a social, political and cultural context." (Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter)
A treat for both cinema and visual art lovers, world premiered at Berlinale 2013, SHIRLEY -- VISIONS OF REALITY is a unique cinematic event, a fascinating dialogue both between painting and cinema and between personal and political history. An homage to the iconic American painter Edward Hopper, the film brings to life through the means of cinema 13 of his paintings, to tell the story of a woman whose thoughts, emotions and contemplations let us observe an era in American history. In a series of breath-taking tableaux vivants, Deutsch's impressive set design, together with the remarkable lighting by cinematographer Jerzy Palacz, brilliantly recreate Hopper's visual universe, valuing its inherent cinematic and narrative qualities. The film follows the life of Shirley, a liberated "woman in America in the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and early 60s. A woman who would like to influence the course of history with her professional and socio-political involvement, who does not accept the reality of the Depression years, WWII, the McCarthy era, race conflicts and civil rights campaigns as given, but rather as generated and adjustable. A woman whose work as an actress has familiarized her with the staging of reality, the questioning and shaping of it; an actress who doesn't identify her purpose and future with that of solo success or stardom, but who strives to give social potency to theatre as part of a collective. A woman who cannot identify with the traditional role model of a wife yet longs to have a life partner." (GUSTAV DEUTSCH)

MONTANUS - The COLD VEIN from MONTANUS on Vimeo.
The call of the mountain is even stronger during winter, when the snow breaks the tree-tops and the cold weather freezes the bones. During this time, when most people put their bike to rest, an adventure between two Italian buddies began. They aimed to search for the COLD VEIN, that vein which come back to pulsate in the winter wilderness. This was an experience that brought Giorgio and Francesco to find more than what they were searching for. A journey through their own limits, where what is important, is not the width of the tires but the extent of the horizons.
The video is dedicated to Walter Belli, a dear friend who had a bad injury during a DH session and who is still fighting every day with the wilderness alive in his heart.
Self filmed with a Canon 500D (2009), a GoPro HERO4 and a “no brand” alluminum tripod. Aerial filming by APR Italia. Edited with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. Music: Ark Life - "Some Unheroic Hill"

The Ballad of Holland Island House from Lynn Tomlinson on Vimeo.
The Ballad of Holland Island House is a short animation made with an innovative clay-painting technique in which a thin layer of oil-based clay comes to vibrant life frame by frame. Animator Lynn Tomlinson tells the true story of the last house on a sinking island in the Chesapeake Bay. Told from the house's point of view, this film is a soulful and haunting view of the impact of sea-level rise.
Oscar-nominated documentarians Tia Lessin and Carl Deal (Trouble the Water) describe it as a “totally mesmerizing, thoughtful and immersive piece.” Lyrics by Lynn Tomlinson Music by Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle annaandelizabeth.com Take a peek behind the scenes to see Lynn's clay-painting-animation process: vimeo.com/111169175

First and Final Frames from Jacob T. Swinney on Vimeo.
What can we learn by examining only the first and final shot of a film? This video plays the opening and closing shots of 55 films side-by-side. Some of the opening shots are strikingly similar to the final shots, while others are vastly different--both serving a purpose in communicating various themes. Some show progress, some show decline, and some are simply impactful images used to begin and end a film. Hábito e renovação: uma aula dadaísta from CCLULP on Vimeo.

Onion Skin by Olivier Ratsi - TEASER from ANTIVJ is a visual label on Vimeo.
Onion Skin, an installation by Olivier Ratsi [Antivj / Fr] Concept & visual content: Olivier Ratsi Music: Thomas Vaquié Onion Skin is a new immersive installation by Olivier Ratsi, an artist on the ANTIVJ visual label. The first stage in the Echolyse project, which will give birth to several variations around the same concept, Onion Skin is made up of a physical dimension – a module of two walls, positioned at right angles – augmented by a projection and a 5.1 sound broadcast. Onion Skin is a graphical work about the re-composition of time and space through a game of perspectives, both of the exhibition space itself and that of the projection canvas. Built around a progressive structure, made up of 4 parts lasting 14 minutes in total, the piece plays on the principle of repetition and scale to create a physical and hypnotic experience that opens doors onto the hidden and untouchable. The whole experience of the installation is based on a very specific point of view. A precise position from which a new dimension is revealed to the audience by anamorphosis. The simple geometric elements (“peelings”) that seemed to be flat at first suddenly start delimiting a new space. The illusion of a new dimension within the installation slowly appears as the onion skins seem to be leaving their physical surface behind. A 5.1 surround sound set-up accentuates the physical dimension of the installation, strengthening and playing with the impression of volume and space. antivj.com/onionskin Management & production: Nicolas Boritch

Heterotic, the group whose core members are Mike Paradinas and his wife Lara Rix-Martin with interchangeable singers are back, this time with French singer Vezelay a.k.a. Matthieu Le Berre, who was last heard on his own single on Planet Mu a couple of years ago.
Here, on the catchy ‘Rain’, he lends a tender falsetto to the rich jazzy chords of this gently propulsive, eighties influenced pop song.
