what's the process behind the houndoom line

Late reply, I forgot that houndoom wasn't one of the pokémon I put the explanation on the post itself. I should probably edit the older mons to have those huh.

The concept idea for houndoom was pretty straightforward: a hellhound that actually looked like a goat. With that, I could tie in devil/hellhound imagery and wolf in sheeps clothing

I did some studies on dobermann anatomy to start. I've never been good at dogs to be honest. I actually had to do some extra paw studies because I don't know how to draw them well lmfao

The goat there is a valais blackneck, which I picked as the goat part of houndoom because of its horn shape and the fact they're half black and half white, and I could adapt that into the black and tan coloring of dobermanns

The eyebrows were turned into eyespots for the skull marking in the face, which means i could repurpose the motif on the chest with the dobermann spots Also looking like eyes. I also gave them goat bellies and chests because its cuter. I wanted them to feel like amalgamations and not just dogs with hooves

#007 - #008 - #009 - The tails of the Squirtle line are made of sea foam, storing air for long dives. They prefer staying at shores and spraying water on random passersby for amusement.

So for this line I had three main goals: 1. Add some more aquatic turtle anatomy on the line. 2. Make their shells based on sea shells, so that i can introduce the blastoise cannons as the shells openings, almost like a siphon. 3. the very popular "put that fur back into the blastoise.

So for my studies i started with studying both a turtle with flippers and one without, and then applying those on my squirtles to see which one worked best. To avoid overlap with the titouga line, I decided to go with the snaked neck turtle as inspiration, but i brought some of the pig nosed turtle's nose to the line because its cute

The tails turning into some sea foam-y subsance and the fur ending up looking more like gills came later, to tie down random parts of the design into a more water related theme, instead of it just being a water type because its a blue turtle. also it storing oxygen is a reference to turtles breathing outta their ass btw. they do that

The rest just came from me enjoying drawing turtles and making it as accurate as i could without losing the whimsy

most pokemon that i dont want to accept sponsors for are for personal reasons (want to take my time, theyre special to me etc)

but for the eeveelutions its both that 1. the idea of asking for 270$ usd for pokemon art makes me sick 2. im going to do some insane cocomelon shit to their designs. some transmutation shit. some dna recombination shit. and i dont want someone to pay money and then see that and get dissapointed lol

What's your opinion on the joltik/galvantula designs? I love them, but they deifinitely could've gone way harder on the tarantula aspect (why so little legs??)

the thing with many arachnid designs is that 8 legs is a lot of legs to manage, and spiders have pretty stout bodies too, so its not like centipede/milipede designs that can easily stick one leg in each section. This means that for animation (both normal and game), posing, modeling etc, dealing with their legs can be very annoying, and thus theyre cut down on the number.

Especially for a cartoony game like pokemon. its hard to stick 8 legs in the simplified designs of the series without cluttering it up or making unclear animations. Spidops does a trick of combining the legs into 4 larger limbs.

now, i do wish theyd try a biiit harder. Its hard, but 8 legs can be achieved and I'd rather 6 legs than just 4 for sure

well, a lot of these just mean id have to do object design instead of creature design! so for example, my studies for klefki will be designs of keys, keyholes and keyholds. i might be more of a creature character designer, but they will be fun challenges and I'm excited to tackle them once i decide to do them.

#300 - #301 - The skitty line is one of the most exotic cat pokémon, and many yearn to own them as pets. However, they are extremely mischievous and hard to maintain, being more suited for high energy lifestyles such as contests or battling.

I wasn't sure what to do with the skitty line, until my friend mentioned servals and everything clicked. Both in shapes, but also because skitty is often a rare encounter, and servals are exotic pets that are not fit to Be a pet, I could play with that.

I did some simple studies of servals, and kinda just jumped into designing these guys

The main things i added were serval spots, but also a crescent moon marking to delcatty, and little crescent moon in skitty cheeks. Delcatty used to have a moon marking on its gen 3 sprite, and I wanted that back!!! it was so cute!!!! I think it ties their moon theming and moonstone evo a lot more.

I also kept delcatty's tail more similar to skitties. because it looks like a flower with stamens now which is very cute

Turtonator is my favorite pokemon of all time :) I have a baby shrine for it. theres only two gifts from my friends but I love them deeply... i wish i had money to buy turtonator merch but its all very expensive and needs to be shipped (more expenses)......

If you don’t mind me saying, I actually really love how Smeargle is drawn! A lot of the time I see people say Smeargle is based on a beagle, but I never really saw it looking like one. Honestly until now I never even knew what kind of animal it kind of resembled, if any. It feels so right seeing your design for it, kinkajou actually works very well for it unlike a beagle.

i have a feeling that smeargle was not designed as a beagle but as a very cartoony generic dog. the beagle reference is only found in the english and german translations (excluding all the ones who just copy the english name)

because of how cartoony it is, i decided that just making it a dog in my style would be a disservice: itd just be a bipedal dog with a long tail, which is not the actual feeling smeargle has. the bipedal plantigrade with little hands and a looong tail was much more friendly to animals who look like that already, hence the kinkajou choice. they also have long tongues so smeargle can stay with their tongue out all the time

#235. Smeargle live in groups, each with their own color of paint. They enjoy combing and preening their tails to be their favorite brush shape, and are more likely to pick shapes other Smeargle don't have. Together, they make full masterpieces.

Design process undercut

So this guy was a bit of a ride to design. At first, I decided to base it off lemurs, because I wanted to make smeargle an animal with a long tail + its more monkey like body. So I started studying lemurs

And then i realized that fuck, grafaiai exists LOL. thats literally a lemur aye-aye. So i had to pivot, and I considered other animals like coati and even just giving up and making it a dog like a bull terrier, but then I was talking to a friend who reminded me of kinkajous. and then it all came together. i also took the time to do some design studies for grafaiai, but you wont get to see that until i finish that design innit

After that, there wasn't much to worry about. Smeargle is a simple design and I kept most of it simple, with just adding some countershading to the body and some extra paint spots. The way the tail works is so that they're still able to grab on branches and use it normally, so the ink fur cuts off at the end and is only present on one side

#543 - #544 - #545. As Venipede evolves, its carapace becomes a dull cocoon as its insides liquify, and if anything tries to break it, it'll stab them aggressively until dead. It regains its lustrous carapace after evolving and becomes docile, giving rides to smaller pokémon and humans it meets.

I had a pretty solid idea for scolipede itself: Make it more buggy, reference centipede anatomy, but keep its horse whimsy. I did many study of centipede faces and anatomy to figure out how to place their antennae and ultimate legs (thats what the final pair of legs that look like antennae on the end of centipedes is named!). I wanted to keep some of the horn shapes, and also have the tail look like a false head like it does in many centipedes.

The weird eye shape of these guys is referencing the ocelli of centipedes: forming compound eyes. The spikes are actually referencing a milipede instead of a centipede, Desmoxytes purpurosea, who have big pink spikes. The empty spot is meant to look like a little saddle :) and the difference in color is because i think bright green feels more toxic paired with red than the greyish purple the canon one has.

venipede was easy, adapting the canon simplicity and then just adding some centipede anatomy like the antennae below the carapace.

whirlipede however, was pretty annoying. I didnt know what to do with it! i didnt want to just make a wheel but didnt want for it to just look like a venipede curled up. i decided to go the cocoon route: the carapace is protecting the goo inside. centipede dont go through cocoon phases but shhh. made it dull to keep its unique color from the rest of the line that the canon one has.
