Splatoon 3 : Grandfestival

Date: 9/13 - 9/15

Team: Present

Whenever Splatoon has a final event, I can't help but think of what a creative risk the game was, but a risk that paid off. A silly little squid game about music and friendly competition went on to be one of Nintendo's new big IP. I definitely think Grandfest showed just what the creatives behind Splatoon are capable of.

For their player base, Splatoon hosted a three day in game version of burning man; complete with set-lists, new songs and a fantastic new location. All to celebrate the past, present and future of the series. When I walked into the venue, I was stunned at the amount of effort put into the event. The colors and atmosphere were great. I swear I spent so much of my time running from venue to venue to try to catch my favorite songs. To top it off, on the final night, the canvas of the venue burned away all night while the newest song premiered.

But I think my favorite part was sharing the event with my partner and friends. Me and my partner set aside time to play together, to enjoy listening to the music and to take cute in-game pictures. And most of all, to just enjoy each others company. Whether my team won or lost was irreverent as my favorite part of these big events is that they bring my friends and partner back to one of my favorite games.

Its always nice to see the fanbase light up. On all my socials media all I saw was people sharing photos like it was a real concert. The atmosphere and everyone sharing their OC's and love of the series was infectious.

Oddly enough, my favorite day was the last day of the fest. The sun rose on the venue, the awning had completely burned away, and the goodbye themes were playing. It was like the video game version of what it feels like to pack your stuff and leave your summer vacation.

I don't play a lot of live service games, so events like this are rare for me. So I'm glad I was here to experience it with everyone. It feels very "you had to be there." Something special for the fans in the right here and now. And how cool that a series with such improtance on a song, ends with a song as well.
