Discerning Information During Calamities  Through the Use of Social Media

Social media are designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. While many people access social media through smartphone apps, this communication tool started with computers, and social media can refer to any internet communication tool that allows users to broadly share content and engage with the public. Social media originated as a way to interact with friends and families. The power of social media is the ability to connect and share information with anyone on Earth, or with many people simultaneously. Social Media has redefined and revolutionized communication during calamities. In times of calamities, people tend to use social media for several reasons - to check on family and friends, seek support, gather news about the calamities, daily updates on safe locations and food & water supplies etc .Apart from improving rescue and relief operations, people can also use social networking sites to send donations.

In this blog,  we will discus on how does social media help families, social workers and  government in discerning information during calamities.

For Families:

Social media makes every families to stay connected so that they can informed one another on what is their current situations during the times of calamities. Through social media, every family during a calamity can easily communicate with their relatives from other places. They are able to communicate and check on the current situation of their relatives and ask if they need any help. Through Facebook, Messenger and other forms of social media, they can also give or send warnings and updates to notify their family members and relatives so they can prepare and be reminded of the precautionary measures during a calamity.

For Social Workers:

Through social media, social workers become more aware and informed about the degree of situation of what they have to go through and what kind of response they have to give during a calamity. They are able to locate easily the places where their aid is most needed. By the use of social media, it can help them analyze the impact of those calamities and through this, they will come up on the ideas and find all the possible ways in supporting those people who are being affected of calamities.  Social media has enabled social workers across the world to connect, share knowledge and information.  The best and most cost-effective outcomes for people who use services are achieved when professionals work and learn together, develop a common language and understanding and share knowledge and wisdom. The use of social technology and social networking enables people to collaborate, build relationships and share information and resources. Aside from that social workers use social media as their voice to educate the people about a certain manner. For example in giving tips for an emergency such as first aid medication. Another way is in educating people about on preparation, reduction and recovery during calamities.

For Governments: 

Social media helped the governments in discerning information by giving them the ideas and decisions on how will they response to the people that are being affected by the calamities. Through social media, they can easily ask for help to our neighbor countries in order to have a partner in providing relief goods and finances to the affected people. 

Social media has a great contributions especially in times of calamities. As we can see above, social media has a very advantage feature which can be able to help in giving such essential information for immediate response. 

The following are the benefits that the families, social workers, and governments of using social media during calamities:

1. CONNECTING WITH LOVED ONES:

Within 24 hours after a disaster happened, people start tagging and posting the names and pictures of missing loved ones. It was an online sounding board to keep everyone updated whether their families, relatives, or friends had survived or not.

2. NOTIFYING THE AUTHORITIES:

Since the recent disasters affected huge areas and there were only a few people with minimal technical assistance during the first few days, social media filled in the information gaps.

3. ORGANIZING RELIEF EFFORTS:

The best way to get information about needed assistance like C130 flights, medical help, and where to give and receive relief goods was through social media.

4. INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS:

Everyone helped in keeping tabs. Reports, such as repacking the relief goods from Indonesia with a government bag or with the politicians’ seal on it, were plastered all over the internet.

5. EMPOWERING AND STRESS DEBRIEFING FOR SURVIVORS:

The affected individuals were empowered because they feel that in their own way, they were able to take control of the situation they were in.

Differentiating Traditional Media and Social Media

With the help of social media, the interaction and communication became better, easier and faster. There is an instant and effective way of communication. Unlike in the past, for example the news, it is not delivered on the actual time to the people around the world.  Discerning information through the social media in the present is much more convenient compared to the past media we used before such as television, radio and printed media. With social media, one can get real time updates during a calamity anywhere and anytime while with the traditional media you can only get access to news if you are at home or in a place with television and radio. Traditional media only offers a one way conversation and therefore there is no chance for a person to communicate his or her thoughts about a news. On the contrary, social media provides a two way conversation and thus, it allows people to exchange and share information with others. Through social media, one can interact with another while obtaining and giving information. Although the down side of social media is that the news coming from this are not always reliable compared to traditional media in which the content are polished by professionals or experienced people in the field. It would still then come down that both the social media and the traditional media should be used by people in discerning information wisely to be able to provide the correct and honest information to all.

Upuan (Original Pilipino Music)

    The title “Upuan“ have a connotative meaning, it refers to the executive chair either local or national. The song talks about the comfortable life by the one in the highest position or let’s says the one who “seated” in Malacañang. The rich became richer and the poor became poorer. Instead people that are in the position will lead us to the right way, they just sit and did nothing to make our society more harmonious, they never dare to stand up and watch and think of the people around them. The only thing that the song wanted to tell is that they (the politicians) must to look out the situation of the poor for them to realize the things that they’ve done only for themselves. The poor cries for the attention, good governance and good life.

    Gloc-9 wrote this song as a calling for those who have the power. The power to turn the lives of the other people into better. Those persons behind those high walls, living in a mansion, riding in a convoy. Those persons who have the position, a position which were given by the people who gave their trust. Being trusted is a privileged but they do not see the essence of being a leader- to lead the country and to improve the life of its people.

    I decided to feature it on my blog for the people who will watch this be inspired, motivated, and  open their eyes in the real world of governance and politics. In every stanza of lyrics, there are hidden meaning that when you break the code, you will understand fully the message of the song. One of the reason why I had chose this song as one of my featured blog because it contains a lot of information behind the lyrics that will hit those persons who have a high positions in the society. They used money and their status in the society in making people suffer. They don’t give what people really deserve. As we observe the Philippines and the neighbor countries, we have so many disadvantages compare to them. From the technologies, economies, products, and mostly how the government runs here, we became so poor. Why? The primary reason is corruption. They became selfish and greedy on wealth.  In this song, they really want the executives to stand up and look what happening in their surroundings for them to realize if they are really worth to be in the position wherein people decided for them to be in that place and also for them to realize how much people became so affected because of their wrong way of running the government. 

    I featured this song because I know and believe that many people will appreciate this. I also want to ignite fire in the heart of the children, a fire that will turn them in the eagerness to become a leader of this country someday and change the rotten system of this nation because they are also the victim of poverty and corruption.

In our times, there are only few people who were using words that we inherited from our ancestors that’s why when we heard this uncommon words, it felt like it was new but it was not. Now, the purpose of this blog is to deliver and give you some unknown words that weren’t used because we are in the world in which our words that used is go with the development of technologies.

Here are some the Uncommonly Used Filipino Words:

1. Talasarili o Talaarawan

English Trans lation: Diary

Tagalog Definition: Isang pang-araw-araw na rekord, lalo na ng personal na talaan ng mga pangyayari, mga karanasan, at mga obserbasyon; isang journal.

English Definition: A record of events, transactions, or observations kept daily or at frequent intervals : journal especially : a daily record of personal activities, reflections, or feelings.

Example when used in a sentence: Pinapahalagahan ko ang aking talasarili dahil dito nakalagay lahat ng mga nangyayari sa aking buhay at ang mga lihim na hindi ko masabi kaninuman.

2. Anluwage o Karpintero

English Translation: Carpenter

Tagalog Definition: Ang isang tao na ang trabaho ay upang gumawa o ayusin ang mga kahoy na bagay o kahoy na bahagi ng mga gusali.

English Definition: A worker who builds or repairs wooden structures or their structural parts.

Example when used in a sentence: Sa oras na may isang bubong ang nasira o isang haligi ang nabiyak, tumawag lamang ng anluwage upang kaagad itong maisaayos.

3. Salipawpaw o Eroplano

English Translation: Airplane

4. Kartamuneta o Pitaka

English Translation: Wallet

Tagalog Definition: Isang maliit at patag na lalagyan na maaaring gamitin upang magdala ng mga personal na bagay tulad ng pera, tarheta de taranta, at mga dokumento ng pagkakakilanlan (lisensya sa pagmamaneho, tarhetang pagkakakilanlan, tarhetang gantimpala, atbp.), litrato, permisong panlipat, tarhetang panregalo, tarhetang pangnegosyo at iba pang papel o tarhetang nakalamina.

English Translation: Razor

Tagalog Definition: Isang matalas na instrumentong ginagamit upang ahitin ang buhok.

English Definition: An instrument with a sharp blade or combination of blades, used to remove unwanted hair from the face or body.

Example when used in a sentence: Gumagamit ako ng labaha upang matanggal ag buhok sa aking hita.

English Translation: Honeymoon
