reading a book with a protagonist that reminds me of TWOC leo (minus the fascism. and the homosexuality unfortunately) and it's so magical. i love characters who can't function if they're not on fight mode and that are forced by circumstances to stop fighting. and i love when they're allowed to be angry and miserable and bitter because their life fucking sucks... and the reason it sucks is mostly because of the consequences of their own actions.
it's such a joy to read a character like that, as depressing as it can get... but honestly a character making me think of leo always makes me happy, and it's a sure way for them to end up in my favourite characters list
#imagine nicknaming a character 'the crooked knight' and expecting me not to immediately think LEO DAN BROCK#oh leo u will always be the blueprint for me...

you are my conscience! when you cease to hurt me i shall be either perfect or dead! i wish i could lay my whole heart on your altar-table! this had always been one of the risks! he knew what sulien intended him to feel and he felt it! no enemy he had ever faced had been as hard as sulien could be!

just thought about jaime lannister again. fuck. that rat monkey bastard. he is privileged, he’s richer than most bloodlines combined, he looks like a girl, he’s almost 40, he has mommy issues and daddy issues and sister issues and brother issues, his name means ‘i love’, he’s been unserious all his life, he used to be the best swordsman in the land, he is disabled, he is blond, he’s used to crossdress so that his twin sister can play with swords while he learned to sew, his fursona is a lion, he is greying, he’s in love with a girl he’s been bullying the entire time they’ve known each other, he wants to be topped by her, he used to fuck his sister, he’s washed up, he has body dysmorphia, he fought a bear, he’s the only reason his disabled brother is alive, he wants to save everyone, he can’t save anyone, he watched his children die, he killed his king, he kept his promises

i finished cryoburn and it was fine. it was fun enough, a pretty classic miles adventure but i wish ivan had been there. kinda sad this is the last miles book and it didn't do anything interesting with his character, but i hope he gets some good writing as a side character in the next book? also i wish what happened after the ending was a novella or something (like i didn't need the flowers of vashnoi, this would've been so much more interesting 😭) but i guess it will be developed in the final book... anyway. a perfectly average vorkosigan adventure
#vorkosigan saga#i do notttt want to be negative :(#i wonder if my problem post-memory is just series fatigue and not necessarily that the series got worse#i mean yes memory is obviously much better than anything after lol. and CVA was not great#not good even. but still

He thought that Beelzebub probably looked like Ludovico da Bologna, but that equally the Patriarch owned that penetrating, unsentimental form of insight which permitted him, if allowed, to nick the Achilles' tendon of the soul, and twist the remains to his purpose.
Dorothy Dunnett, The Unicorn Hunt
#house of niccolo#the unicorn hunt#to nick the achilles' tendon of the soul is crazy... i love you dorothy

happy the disorderly knights part two: the eight-pointed cross francis/jerott to those who celebrate
#lymond#the disorderly knights#francis/jerott#wow...... i miss them#so i opened this book and just started reading quotes#it's always nice to remember how fun and funny jerott's pov is#because as much as he tries to deny it he just Cares So Much#about literally everything but in this case specifically about lymond#'Jerott knew that professionally Lymond was an impeccable ally; and that there was nothing else about him that he cared for at all' SURE BUD

the fact that so much of ivan's character was shaped by the pressure he felt from his mother/barrayaran society to get married asap and the solution was... just getting married immediately to a woman who he likes and who likes him back and everyone wants them to stay married and is happy about it :) wow... amazing... who said stories needed conflict?
#ivan you deserved a bisexual awakening and a scandalous relationship with by and then saying fuck you to convention and doing things#your own way and in the meantime getting over your fear of responsibility because you're actually really fucking smart and good at your job#in a just world....

diplomatic immunity was fine and captain vorpatril's alliance was a big disappointment... i hope this series sticks the landing because i do love it but i fear it peaked with mirror dance and memory and everything after is just like. whatever
#as a huge ivan fan. what a disservice to ivan this book was :(#and ivan/tej was one of the most nothing burger romances i've read in recent years. which is saying a lot

the vorkosigan saga has the worst case of "let's pair everyone up real quick" i've ever seen since naruto
#at least here it's a bit more gradual. i GUESS#the way i've been complaining about this on here and twitter at the same time ajdfkakdgdhj that's how you know it's serious

imagine a romance subplot in which the fact that these two people are together, or were together, or want to be together, actually says something interesting about them as people and has a weight in their character arcs and in the development of their relationship. impossible. cannot be done. that's the stuff of myth

once again utterly fascinated in a horrified sort of way about bujold nailing the romance in her series the first time around and never again. it needs to be studied how terrible some authors are at writing the development of an organic relationship between a man and a woman because most of the time they just make them seem like two dolls they're forcing together. he was a boy she was a girl can i make it any more obvious situation
#heteronormativity is a disease#yes i think ivan/tej is BAD. the set up anyway. and i have no faith at all for the rest lol

byerly vorrutyer i know what you are and i know what bujold will not let you be no matter what
#vorkosigan saga#captain vorpatril's alliance#oh by if i was your writer you would be the most outrageously homosexual man in all of barrayar#(actually a very easy feat to accomplish)
