“Hey, I never said I’d haunt you in a bad way!”

“They’re so giant compared to mine. I mean, I could probably fit both my feet into one of your shoes.” Charlotte teased, shaking her head. “Nuh-uh, you’re the man here, Leon, you’re supposed to lead me, but I can assist you if you think you can’t do it.”” The blonde challenged with a smirk.

“When you tell someone you’re gonna haunt them, I feel like it usually means you’re gonna do it in a bad way.” 

“Well you’re tiny so I don’t think it’s a fair comparison,” he replies, before huffing a sigh. “Isn’t it sexist having a man lead? Or not giving ladies a chance?” He jokes, though he readies himself. It takes him a moment of thinking back to his meagre non-cultural dance experience (he’s fairly sure the last time he danced like this was with Aroha at a friend’s wedding before Anahera was born) before he moves. It’s less stilted and awkward than he expected to be - Charlotte’s magic might be rubbing off on him. That or his years spent keeping a melody going translated to some natural rhythm.

“Right! Maybe I’ll like, clean the kitchen or straighten your shower curtain or something. I’ll be that kind of ghost.”

Charlotte couldn’t help the grin that stretched across her lips at his childish behavior and shook her head. “I have small feet, so it’s all on you if your giant feet step on mine!” The blonde took a half-step away from him, regardless, to give her feet the extra space. “Alright, show me what you’ve got.”

“Oh, very spooky.” 

“My feet aren’t giant!” He protests, just ‘cause he can. “They’re proportional.” He wrinkles his nose a bit when she tells him to show her, taking a moment to recall what little non-cultural dance experience he had. “I uh... You should definitely lead.”

“Ah, it’s kind of my specialty, Leon.” 

“You’ve got the mean and scary look to you, but I mean, you are a big marshmallow. Ana’s not wrong, you’re really not the mean type. I mean, it’ll be great when we get her started on ballet. She’s taking to it real quick, and she’s actually got a real talent for it.” Charlotte smiled, twisting a lock of short hair around her finger. “Yeah, I don’t know where the time went. My little baby’s growing up.”

“I think I’m beginning to realize that,” Leon notes, dryly amused. 

“It’s all in the eyebrows,” he says with a laugh, nodding along. “I’m glad - she did a bit of ballet back home but she quit ‘cause of her teacher. They said she’d be too tall to be a proper ballet dancer, especially ‘cause the dance scene in New Zealand is much smaller than it is here.” He smiles at her words, humming a soft noise of agreement. “I know how you feel. You blink and miss stuff.”

“Ah, I’ll be like Caspar the friendly ghost, or something. I’ll be a cute little ghost.”

Charlotte smiled, wrapping her fingers around his hand, her small palm resting on his shoulder. “Ah, you’ve got jokes, Leon! But, if you can get through this without complaining or stepping on my feet, I’ll take you to get some dinner.”

“So really haunting isn’t much of a threat, then.” 

Leon huffs a sigh (childish) and pouts his lower lip (also childish), though he smiles a moment later. “All right, all right. My lips are sealed. As long as you don’t get your feet too close to mine we’ll be golden.”

I have a lot more patience for others than I do for myself, and I’m much better at bringing out the best in others than in myself. That’s just the kind of person I am.  I’m the scratchy stuff on the side of the matchbox.

“Ah, you’ve got a point there, my friend.”

“You’re a pushover? Have you seen yourself? You can get people to listen based on intimidation alone. I know, she’s almost as tall as me already, it’s crazy! But I swear, she’ll like it when she’s older.”

“Thanks for that, Charlotte. You sure know how to make a guy feel special.” 

“I’m definitely a pushover - I’m not very good at intimidation. I’m even worse at trying to lord it over Ana. She’s just like ‘dad, you’re silly’ and then goes to watch TV. Her mum is only five two, so she’s catching her up pretty quick. I think she’ll like it - I hope she does. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.” He’s quiet a moment, before he speaks up to question Charlotte. “How’s Amelia doin’? She’s just started Kindy, right?”

“It better be a darn good one! Otherwise I’ll haunt you for life.”

Charlotte grinned, placing her right hand in his left, and moving his left hand to sit in the middle of her spine. “Hey, we’ve still gotta dance, you know! But we’re making progress, so yes…. for now.”

“And what will that entail? Lots of wailing and chain-clanking?” 

Leon settles his broad palm where she directs it, big and warm against her back. His other holds hers carefully, conscious of her dainty fingers. “Enough progress to call it a day? I’m pretty sure it’s getting close to beer o’clock.”

“OH! I’m there a couple days a week. She’s going to love dancing with Charlotte. You’re an amazing dad, Leon.”

“Oh, you are? You’ll have to spy on her for me, make sure she’s not doin’ anything naughty.”

“I’m okay. I’ve got a lot to make up for.”

Well thanks for telling me that. Now I feel old too. I’m turning 34 on Christmas Eve.

“Hey, man. I’ve gotta to something to make myself feel better, right?”

“Yeah? All right,” Leon says, giving Holly a grin. He makes sure to shorten his stride as they walk, making it easy for her to keep up.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I was young, I wanted to be older and now that I’m older…well, I wish I were young again. Ah, yes, I can see that working for you. Unfortunately, I’ve always been short.

“That’s growin’ up for ya, right? I think we’re all in the same boat when it comes to that.” 

“Hey, there’s nothin’ wrong with being petite. You’ve got less of a chance of banging your head on stuff.”

“The three quarters are extremely important. You must never forget that,” Lizzy chuckled lightly. “Never. And I can understand, I think, I get the same with my baby brother. Happy birthday by the way.”

“That’s what she’s always tellin’ me,” Leon replies, smiling a bit. “He’s probably a bit older than eight though, right?” 

“Thank you. S’definitely been pretty happy.”

“Well, thank you,” she responded, nodding her head. “Where should we head to?”

“Well, the Beach Bar’s pretty close - we could always go there?”

Oh jeez, I can’t even imagine my son growing up that fast! He’s always going to be my little baby which…well, probably won’t sit all that well with him.

“I feel the same. But y’know. Kids are gonna be like that, right? I know I couldn’t wait to be a big kid when I was that age. I guess I was lucky that people always thought I was older anyway, ‘cause I was always taller than all the other kids.”

“Your daughter is seriously one of the sweetest little girls I’ve met. She obviously inherited some good traits.”

“It’s really not difficult to be cooler than me.” 

“She can definitely be sweet when she wants to be - I guess that’s something she got from me. Though I think she’s a smart kind of sweet and I’m really just a pushover. I think she’s got the tall gene too - something she’s less than happy about.”
