Majapahit: The largest Hindu empire in South East Asia
It is the last and largest Hindu kingdom in South East Asia. According to a book written by a writer called Mpu Prapanca, the empire included the whole country of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and parts of the South East Asian mainland.
It was founded in 1293 by Raden Wijaya. It reached its glory in the reign of Hayam Wuruk. Its prime minister was Gajah Mada and he had been serving as prime minister since the rule of Hayam Wuruk’s mother, Queen Tribhuwana Wijayatunggadewi. He was also the chief of the military. Gajah Mada made an oath that he vowed not to eat any food containing spices until he united the whole Indonesia. He fulfilled that in 28 years.
Following Hayam Wuruk’s death in 1389, The empire began to decline. After some other people took the throne, The great empire was finally defeated by the Sultante of Demak in 1527. After Majapahit became an islam kingdom, Hindus began to retreat to mountain ranges.
The Balinese people of bali are descendants of the Majapahit empire. And there is still a Hindu community in Mount Bromo called the Tengger people today.
