𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂 = 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔 ?
The Manga is always being compared with Comics, and why is that?
Maybe because of how both of them states stories with animations and pictures? But there is more than story lines and pictures. Searching data about these books will make our mind more open at how they differ in each other.
The word “manga” was first coined in 1798 by Santō Kyōden’s Shiki no Yukikai. And in 1814, the artist Katsushika Hokusai was the first to use the word “manga” as the title for his sketchbooks titled “Hokusai Manga”. Following the end of World War II, Japan was occupied by the Allies which restricted any propaganda or Japanese militarism. This meant that Japanese artists had room to explore their artistic styles. The United States brought over their comics and cartoons. This heavily influenced the style of manga at the time. That allowed Tezuka Osamu to create one of Japan’s most iconic and influential characters — Astro Boy.
Another famous stylistic innovator at the time was Machiko Hasegawa, creator of Sazae-san.
Both Osamu Tezuka and Machiko Hasegawa’s innovative techniques paved the way for shōnen (for young boys) and shōjo (for young girls) manga. The former being the most popular genre manga genre today.
Tumblr media
Manga is originated from Japan and the words are usually Japanese or some of them translated it in English so that other people can read it. It is usually printed in black and white or some people make it colorized, it is read from left to right (back to front)  and that may be the most different characteristic of manga to comics. It has more visuals than words, the story is usually presented with mor pictures so that people know what the characters are doing, and it consist of many as in MANY chapters and seasons, so it is a long story.

Tumblr media
Comic strips first appeared in newspapers in the late 19th century, with popular strips collated into book form starting with The Yellow Kid in the US in 1895. In Europe, The Adventures of Tin Tin began in 1928 as a 2-page comic in the youth supplement of a Belgian newspaper. The late 1930s marked the arrival of the superhero genre with comic magazines featuring Superman and Batman, as well as British children’s comics The Dandy and Beano. The 1940s saw the release of Archie Comics and the Peanuts comic strip.

Tumblr media
The Comic originated in America and usually written in English, unlike Manga it is colored, and is read from left to right (front to back). It is presented with too many words instead of pictures, you can understand the story with words. And it has only a short story but with many different books and story line, unlike in Manga, it has a lot of books but it stays within the story line.
That’s it! Thank you sooooo much for giving us the opportunity to differentiat books like this mwaa!

The Marvelous Magic of Manga And Comics
Tumblr media
Manga and Comics Western comic books and manga can look on the surface as if they’re from two different worlds. It’s easy to see why some choose one over the other, from art to text orientation, theme  and characters, but both  are just as  convincing  and  certainly worth reading. In essence, however both media tell incredible stories through the use of images and phrases produced.
Themes, Personalities, and Genres Though comics and manga look different in the representation of characters and scenery both have very similar genres, themes, and character tropes that they stick to in order to  tell the story.  Think of  your favorite  superhero  from  DC or Marvel and  then think about your favorite protagonist from anime.
Comics
The first things that motivate us to dream are possibly comic books. Comic books and the capers in them protect us from the harsher realities of the outside world throughout the increasing years where there are no superheroes, adventurous reporters, or  philosopylical pets. Even  we progress into  more  adult types of  entertainment, there  remains the magic spell of comics.
Maybe most of us read them or watch them on TV every day now, but who can deny that it brings back a glimpse of the wonderful years. But there are those who pursue comic books after that. After all, comic books’ enduring culture is not due to the childrens crowd alone. And in this modern world, comic books keep having new leases of existence.

While Comic books are comics that feature multiple pages. The books can have more than just one specific comic the point is they are gathered in a volume. These can also be self-contained but more often than not they entail a larger story arc that combines stories over multiple volumes. Think of the super hero genre. Comic books that don’t follow a larger story are usually more child friendly or of a more in a humorous nature. Think of comic books featuring Mickey Mouse or the Smurfs.
Tumblr media
Manga
We know that some of us, know manga well especially when you truly love the art of Manga and you’re an avid fan of Japan and Anime. Of course, some of us will like it because characters are good looking, they have a distinct personalities and stunning visuals and because of that Manga authors and illustrators are totally amazing! Manga is such a word for comics . It is used in the English-speaking world as a genetic term for all comic books and graphing novels. It was originally published in Japan and knowing that Japanese had always impress us by their creative minds, that’s why Manga catches the eye of many. We know that these works are absolutely fantastic.
In Japan, for its ability to create distinctive characters and creative storylines, Manga is highly regarded. It’s a trend of pop culture that has grown from basic art and comic stories to anime fairs, merchandise and films. All of this was made possible by the features of the Manga characters. Manga is all about world, from faces and hair to suits, accessories, and over exaggerated emotions. Manga typically display feelings that are over-exaggerated. Their tears spill out in buckets when a character  cries  or when they laugh, the size of their mouth appears to  surround their heads and  their eyes become slits. There are rosy cheeks and steam roiling around the body of an angry character. And primarily there are five types of Manga
Shonen– Shonen manga often feature lots of action and comedy, and some sort of coming-of-age teamwork between characters example one example is One Piece.
Tumblr media
Shojo ( targeted at teen girls)The focus here is less on action and more on drama, emotion, and, almost always, idealized romance one of it’s example is Sailor Moon.
Tumblr media
Seinen ( targeted between 18+ to adult men)
Just like shonen manga, seinen manga features action and violence, but with a more serious or darker tone, as well as adult content such as sexual situations, graphic violence, or foul language.
Tumblr media
Josei ( targeted at between 18+ to adlut women)
Josei manga are similar to American adult romance novels in that they include sexually explicit scenes that can range from tame to borderline pornographic.
Tumblr media
Korodomomuke ( targeted at young children)
These series will often be cutesy, moralistic, and fun. Both the Pokemon manga and anime are probably the most well-known examples of a Kodomomuke series.
Tumblr media
Now that we tackled about the Comics and Manga? Do you have any preference about this two? Well for me I love to read or watch anime they’re really relaxing for me especially this time that we are in a quarantine. It is a good opportunity to read some of this work. Here are some of my Manga Recommendations:
Kaichou wa maid-sama
Haikyuu
Inuyasha
Naruto
Pokemon
Death Note
Attack on Titan
My Hero Academia
One Piece
Fullmetal Alchemist
” These two may have differences to each other, but they both can bring us happiness and enjoyment”.

Comics gets beaten by manga!
CAVITE, PHILIPPINES - Manga is on the top spot by the most liked electronic literary genre than the comics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What are the similarities of the two?
They can be similar in terms of genres, themes, and character. Its main purpose is to give entertainment.
How do they differ?
They are different because the manga is initially created in Japan; also, the language they used in making manga is the Japanese language. While in comics, they are created in American, and the language they are using in making comics is English. Manga has 5 types which is intended based on its target audiences while comics is mostly about superheroes.
Do you have any personal preference between the two genres? Any personal experience about these genres you wish to share?
We like manga more than comics; because of this quarantine, we started to read manga; and the plot of the story is unbelievable, and it's mind-blowing. We prefer reading manga because it has a lot of varieties. Also, We think most of the comics was adapted into movies.

COMICS VS MANGA
Tumblr media
1.What are the similarities of the two?
Similarities
Themes, Characters, and Genres
While the presentation of characters and scenery look different between comics and manga, both have very similar genres, themes, and character tropes that they stick to in order to tell the story. Think about your favorite DC or Marvel superhero and then think about your favorite anime protagonist.
Let’s take a look at Spider-Man and Izuku Midoriya (from My Hero Academia): both come from humble beginnings, both are bestowed with amazing superpowers, and both have to learn how to control these newfound powers in a world that is becoming more and more tumultuous. Both of our protagonists befriend people who are a part of the hero world they work in, but also have someone in their personal life that keeps them grounded (Aunt May/Mary Jane for Spider-Man, Izuku’s mom). And, finally, they both experience personal growth and struggles as they try to navigate as newly-appointed heroes.
2.How do they differ?
Differences
Format & Text Orientation
Perhaps the biggest–and most noticeable difference–between Western comics and manga is how it’s read. With English, we read from left to right, so that’s how our comic books are laid out. In the Japanese language, text is read from right to left, so that is how they format manga, even when they translate it to English.
Western comic reading left to right. You’ll notice that most manga books have a reading guide if you were to open it up from the left-hand side, which is super handy for manga newbies and those who haven’t had the practice in a while (i.e. me).
Color vs. Black & White
Another noticeable difference between Western Comics and manga is that comics are often colorized and manga is illustrated in black & white. However, there are exceptions to the rule, of course. Sometimes manga will feature full-color pages or inserts, or there are even all color manga books available, and there is a slew of great black & white Western comic books out on the market.
Art Style
When it comes to art styles, Western comics tend to have a bit more variety, especially with indie comics. Superhero comics, like DC and Marvel, tend to have similar styles, but there tends to be more flexibility. Styles can vary from traditional illustration, watercolor, pointillism, and more.
Manga, on the other hand, has somewhat of a specific style. Features like hair, eyes, and other facial details are delicate yet defined, and action shots are drawn in a more dynamic manner. Additionally, manga tends to incorporate many cultural influences into its artwork, making it unique from any other form of comic books.
3.Do you have any personal preference between the two genres?Any personal experience about the two genres you wish to share?
I started reading manga when I was 9 years old and the first book I read was hunter x hunter. After I read that manga book, it continued until I accumulated many books, and now the books are gone because I gave them to my brother.Since I gave my books to my brother and I have moved to the anime series in comics, on the other hand, he reads in the news papers and he looks like a child

Comics vs Manga
Tumblr media
How do they differ?
COMICS is an American (or American-style) magazines, written in magazine format, are comic books,
Typically 24 to 32 pages, and distributed like magazines on a periodic basis (monthly, bi-monthly, etc.).
A comic book will be the average American edition of Spider-Man or Superman.
A graphic novel is essentially a book-format comic book, with a spine instead of staples, and distributed instead of a magazine like a book.
Comics is a medium that uses a collection of still images to convey narratives or other concepts, typically paired with text.
Usually, it takes the shape of a series of image panels. Dialog can be indicated by textual devices such as speech bubbles, captions, and onomatopoeia,
Narration, effects of sound, or other details. Panel size and structure lead to narrative pacing. Cartooning and other types of representation
In comics, illustration is the most popular means of image-making; fumetto is a method which uses photographic images. Popular types include comic strips that are
gag-a-day, Editorial cartoons and gags, and comic books. Since the late twentieth decade, Bound volumes have become increasingly popular, such as graphic novels,
comic albums, and tankōbon, although in the 21st century, online webcomics have proliferated. Reading style of comics is left to right.
MANGA is originated from japan and the reading style of manga is different in comics because manga reading style is right to left.
This is literally the Japanese word for comics, which generally refers directly to comics in the Japanese style when used in English.
Manga is usually, but not always, published in a graphic novel format in English. Even though they are also often available in the format of a
comic book or daily magazine. These are comics or graphic novels coming from Japan. Many manga adhere to a style established in the late 19th century in Japan.
In earlier Japanese art, however the art form had a long prehistory. In Japan, the word manga is used in order to. Please apply to all comics and cartoons.
The word is usually used outside Japan to refer to comics originally published in the region.
What are the Similarities of the two?
While the presentation of characters and scenery look different between comics and manga, both have very similar genres, themes,

Which do you prefer?

Disclosing the mystery
COMICS VS MANGA
Tumblr media
Comics and Manga are both contains graphical drawings. These two is made to entertain the readers. By reading comics and manga you can imagine the events in the strip or panels. These two might be almost the same, but somehow these two has a lot of differences.        Comics is an  American comic. It contain graphical drawings with color. In reading comics, speech balloons are readed continuously without getting dizzy looking for the right pattern to read. It is printed from front to back. It also contains a lot of speech balloons in one page. The story in comics is shorter compare to manga.        Manga is a Japanese comic books. It contains a graphical drawings too but it is usually black and white only. When reading manga, the reading pattern always starts from right to left. The manga is printed from back to front. It is usually contain fewer speech balloons and bigger font when it comes to onomatopoeias. Manga's story ends with many volumes.         Raphael wants manga than comics. He says “even though it is black and white it is still beautiful”. Xyza is not a fan neither of these two graphical novels. *Jan Xyza R. Molina *Raphael V. Tupas

Decampment in a World Full of Comics and Manga
Tumblr media
Chosen Content: Manga and Comics
What are the similarities of the two?
Comics and Manga are genres of the 21st Century Literary that are both considered as graphic novels. They both have the same style and we can easily determine that they are quite similar to one another by just looking at their creative visual graphics.
Comics is a medium that expresses narratives or other ideas using a series of still images, usually combined with text. It typically takes the form of a sequence of panels of images. Textual devices such as speech balloons, captions, and onomatopoeia can indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information. The history of comics has followed different paths in different cultures, but by the mid-20th century comics flourished, particularly in the United States. The term comics is used as a singular noun when it refers to the medium itself.
Manga, on the other hand, are Japanese graphic novels. It is usually known by millennials nowadays since it has the ability to entice young audiences and readers through their creative graphics. The word manga is derived from the the Japanese words kanji and ga that means “whimsical or impromptu pictures”. There are also different genres of manga such as, Shonen, which focuses on action, sports, or romance that has a male point of view, Shoujo, in which it aims to attract girls from ages 12 to 18, Josei, that aims for adult women, Seinen, which is the exact opposite of Josei because it aims for adult men, Shoujo-ai or Yuri, that revolves around lesbian relationships and lastly, Shonen-ai or Yaoi, that focuses on stories that have homosexual relationships.
How do they differ?
They both differ in terms of art style. Although they are both graphic novels, comics is usually realistic whereas manga tends to be more stylized. Also, they differ in their originated country. Manga comes from Japan while Comics is a work of Americans. Furthermore, they also differ in terms of genres, cost, creation, size, presentation, and target audience. If you’re an avid fan of comics or manga, you will easily distinguish their difference in many aspects.
For instance, the color style of manga is often black or white. On the other hand, comics is most likely to design in color, which readers appreciate and recognize the most since they put a lot of effort in their graphics design. Nonetheless, audiences find manga to be more engaging even though it sometimes lacks color and life. Perhaps they find it more interesting due to how the style and structure was created.
Do you have any personal preference between the two genres? Any personal experience about these genres you wish to share?
The first ever book that I have read was probably an Archie Comics. It was given to me by my mother because I was hospitalized for a few days and she thought of keeping me company and ease my boredom. Because of the fact that I was young back then, I was immediately attracted by comics since it has a lively visual that caught my attention. It was fun to read and that’s when I start to collect books. Meanwhile, I was engaged to read manga because it was recommended from a friend. It was also fun to read since I have matured enough and understand a more complex and broad genre. I am hoping to read more of these genres for entertainment purposes when I have time to spare.
How about you? What would your preference be? Is it comics or manga?

Comics mention in the same breath with Doodle Fiction
Tumblr media
Hi guys! My partner and I will present to you the difference between Comics and Doodle Fiction?
So COMICS is a medium that expresses narratives or other ideas using a series of still images, usually combined with text. Comics are serious literature. Comics are usually comprised of art, with or without text, arranged in sequence. As such, they are different from plays, novels, or essays. While DOODLE FICTION incorporates handwritten graphics in telling the story, it is a literary presentation where the author incorporates doodle drawings and hand written graphics in place of traditional font. Drawings enhance the story, often adding humorous elements that would be missing if the illustrations were omitted.
Now you know the difference between Comics and Doodle Fiction, but how about their similarities?
Both Comics and Doodle fiction incorporate drawings, and they use panels with illustrations and texts for readers to quickly understand, illustration, or graphics in telling a story, and they both contains pictures that engages viewers effectively. and lastly they are all made by COMIC STYLE.
Now my partner and I will share our personal preference and experience between the comics and doodle fiction.
My partner and I like the two genres, because it entertains us and some of the stories that we’ve read has moral stories, so my partner gave her personal experience and she would like to share about comics, ok so when she was in Junior high, her teacher told them to make a comic strip and, she did a comics strip story about "Ang Alamat ng Pinya". That is her story while mine, I’ve wanted to share with you my favorite comic strip that I have read when I was in my elementary days, so the title of that comics is Archie. I like the story because it makes me happy when I read it and some of the parts of the story gives a moral lesson.
Which do you prefer?

What if’s Vs. Facts: What do you prefer?
Tumblr media
HOW DO THEY DIFFER?
Science fiction could be a genre that deals with imaginative and relating to concepts like science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes and extraterrestrial life. It is also a way over between realism and anticipating the future. While creative nonfiction is a genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives. Nonfiction is about facts, real people and real life in ways that can change the world. Real-life facts and situations are always shared in a reporting way, but in literature, facts are used as a content of several pieces of literature in a creative way. In literature you need to be creative so that readers do not get bored with your work especially in today's generation, they prefer works about things that are hard to believe. What is most important and enjoyable about creative nonfiction is that it not only allows but also encourages the writer to become a part of the story or essay being written.
WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES OF THE TWO?
Science fiction is under fiction while the creative nonfiction obviously under nonfiction. Both fiction and non-fiction are usually based on the creativity system of thought. They both have story elements such as characters, settings, plot, conflict and theme that make up the story more clearer and comprehensive.
Distinguishing between fiction and nonfiction is important, especially when it comes to crossover genres that blur the line between the two types of writing. For example, there have been works of nonfiction which have been revealed to contain more fiction than fact. On the other hand, there are plenty of novels which are labeled as fiction, even if they contain true events and are based on the lives of the writers. Nonfiction readers expect the truth and fact from nonfiction work, which is why the author should be careful when labeling their book.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL PREFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO GENRES? ANY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ABOUT THESE GENRES YOU WISH TO SHARE?
We prefer science fiction because we think more about things even though we know there is no truth. Many things are playing in our mind, you will think that you want that to happen, that it is super cool. Everything is possible within our imaginations. We prefer science fiction than the creative fiction because we are more into science-related stories and it helps me to fulfill our curiosity. Reading sci-fi is really exciting.
What do you prefer? Your what if’s or facts?

The "Born-Digital" and "Electronic Hypertext"
Tumblr media
Similarities: Digi-fiction and hyperfiction are both fiction, the reader could read it through online-based.
Difference of the two: Digi-Fiction is a book that includes passcodes so that there is more information for the book online. It might be short videos to watch, or more text, it is also know as "born-digital", it combines three media book: book, movie or video and internet website. In order to get the whole story, student must engage in navigation, reading, viewing, in all three formats. It could read from a computer or app-based and can be found in an online version. And in a hyperfiction it is work of fiction written and presented as an electronic hypertext document, especially one that allows variations in plot development In hypertext fiction, the authors only have that much control over their content because even they themselves may never experience all the possible permutations. It is a genre of electronic literature, characterised by the use of hypertext links that provide a new context for non-linearity in literature and reader interaction.
Examples of Digi-Fiction
Tumblr media
Examples of Hyperfiction
Tumblr media
Our Personal preference: We would say we're more interested with digi-fiction because it combines three media but hyperfiction is more convenient than digi-fiction because it's more easy to use.  If we would choose between the two genres of fiction we would pick digi-fiction. In terms of personal experience, way back then I remember I already red a digi-fiction but I forgot the title. I know it's a digi-fiction because I got curious about it so i searched for it and based on google it is categorized as digi-fiction. We still not yet encountered hyperfiction.

Imagination v. Reality: What’s with Non-fiction and Science Fiction?
What is non-fiction? This refers to the literature that was based on facts, also this was the broadest category of literature with hundreds of topics to choose from such as, cooking, science, humor, and more.
Tumblr media
(Stephen Hawking’s The Brief History of Time, 1990 Source: https://www.abebooks.com/products/isbn/9780553176988)
Meanwhile the science fiction is a part of the category of fiction where it was solely based on futuristic scientific advances and often portraying on life in an advanced life on Earth or in an another planet.
Tumblr media
( J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings, 1948 Source: https://www.npr.org/2011/08/11/139085843/your-picks-top-100-science-fiction-fantasy-books)
How this two completely opposite categories similar? One word for you: Creativity. Fiction is creative by nature while the Creative Non-Fiction is creative when the author adopts a writing style that is normally  used in fiction work. They also both have a setting, characters, and a plot. This both types of writing can contain elements of truth or real people, places, and events.
How do they differ?  Science Fiction refers to a literature created from the imagination. The tales often feature a journey that the protagonist takes. It is based on  imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets. While The Creative Non-Fiction refers to literature based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history.
Any thing personal experience about these genres you wish to share? My personal experience about these two genres is I'm more into Creative Non-Fiction rather than Science Fiction. I don't have any habit of reading book but I like reading into a Wattpad app. I prefer to watch a movie like documentaries because it is true to life and it is interesting to know. I don't like Science fiction, but fiction characters, yes.

To my mom,
This is for my mom who keeps on calling Manga, Comics. (I mean IT IS comics but we call it Manga okay? that’s on culture *insert the fingernails emoji*)
Literature in our current generation is so wide and massive. There are various genres we got now, that we call them a certain group when the differences are VERY MUCH visible and we can VERY MUCH tell which is which (except for my mom).
So, without further a do, let me head onto the discussion.
What’s the difference between Manga and Comics?
Before I answer this question, first, what are these two really?
Manga and Comics are both graphic novels, can be both non-fiction and fiction, have the same theme and genre. (short but straight to the point, I know wkwkwkwk)
Now, let’s head back to the first question for a detailed answer.
First, Manga originated from Japan while Comics originated from the United States and United Kingdom. [Manga has 5 classifications: (1) Shounen, for boys, (2) Shoujo, for girls, (3) Seinen, for “men”, (4) Jousei, for “women”, and (5) Kodomo, for kids.]
Second, Manga is sold mostly in the form of a book or sold by the use of a weekly magazine with a black & white color and Comics is sold in a form of magazine-like with a colored print. Here are some illustrations:

[Moving on, (char)]
Third, most Comics makes their character unbelievable. Every character in a Manga that has a power or a special ability is most likely to be weak in the first half, but as the protagonist suffers, it will eventually show his/her true colors and become a stronger hero. While Comics has a concept of a hero where he/she does not gain power or in a simple way, it still has the same power throughout the whole story. (see the characters from the given illustrations above)
Fourth, Manga’s story line lasts longer than Comics because Manga always makes the character experience more things before the conflict.
Fifth, Comics tend to create a new story line on the same story to make it more unpredictable and leaves the audience cliffhangers and curiosity. (technically just giving all characters their own side or, their “own” own story)
And lastly, (this is the most interesting part Mom) you read Comics normally, starting from the front until you finish it blahblahblah, BUT (do not be shocked this is not a thriller movie, ehem ehem, drum rolls please *dudududududu*) when you want to read a Manga, you need to read it starting on the back of the book and the end of the book will be on the front. Isn’t it amazing?!
Clarification! Yes, Manga is considered “comics”, BUT, it is not just any comics and shouldn’t be called just that. We must call it Manga for the sake of origin, culture and respect.
Now mom, do you understand?
[Aight enough clowning myself and my partner, our moms wouldn’t read all of THAT. Manga will be called Comics either way LMAO (same as Anime being called cartoons, gee).]
Frustration aside, personally, I really really love Manga (I’m a human of culture, thanks). Japanese people are weird and I love weird! They are just so creative with their imaginations, it’s so crazy! And with Japanese culture, I am fond of their progression concept; character development. (It also applies to their music industry.) It’s just so mesmerizing to see the characters’ growth. I think it is much more fun to read. [and I’m Japanese so who can doubt hmp]
Back to my precious momma, well, I hope you try and read some of the Manga I recommended, or just watch the Anime adaptation. (okay okay I know you only love watching Kdramas) If not, “with all due respect”, my God just at least classify them right. Love you!
