It has been years since I wrote the following short story. The original was written in Dutch, but for the sake of a bigger audience I translated it. Have fun reading.
The Sun
It is great to see the sun come out. I have seen many beautiful sunrises. Mostly while I was on the road. A bright orange ball that just appeared above the horizon. Clouds that change color because the light always hits them differently, and also the sun itself that slowly changes color and becomes brighter.
Even now the sun is breathtakingly beautiful again. Beautiful in a different way than I am used to. For the first time I see for real what I have only seen on videos before: the sun emerging from behind the earth. I will never forget this.
Immediately when this thought crosses my mind, my panic button gets hit. I am not here to admire the sun! I have to save myself! My spaceship still does not respond. The cockpit seems dead. No power. How do I get this stupid thing operational again? It would have been helpful if I had provided this self-built vehicle with a few solar panels. Stupid that I think about that now. That's what you get when you build your own spaceship in a very stubborn way without first thinking about it. No, of course, I had to build first, then design. I was always good at that. Quickly make a test flight. "No, I'm almost finished, what can happen to me? I'll be right back". I should hit myself in the head.
Not that this spaceship is not solid or anything. It's okay. A little more room for me would've been nice. It would have allowed me to move. That was another thing: "If you want to build your own spaceship, you have to start small", they had said. So, that's what I did. And now, here I am, in the cockpit, with only instruments around me and no possibility to move.
The sun has now become fully visible. It will not last very long, before I will disappear again into the night. In a short while the opposite of what I just witnessed will happen: the sun will disappear behind the earth. And later I will experience the same thing again.
Is that true? Who am I kidding? I want to get out of here. I do not want to see the sun in this way at all anymore. I just want to see the sun rise again. And breathe again. Real air, not canned air. Enjoying the warmth of the sun, on the beach, with a beer in my hand. Something I planned to do when I return from my test flight. IF I return.
It's getting hot. I didn't noticed that before. I am sweating. I am soaking wet. No wonder, the heat can't go anywhere in space. I hope that I cool down a bit on the shadow side of the earth, but that will probably not happen. It will be freezing cold.
I take another look at the sun. I know it will be my last.
