made this poll because i think sometimes the fandom forgets zhao yunlan is as much deranged and obsessed about shen wei as shen wei is about him. the feelings are very mutual!
but this is in no way the sum of his character. he's also a very sweet and devoted lover, and there's also a LOT of characterization in the novel that goes beyond his relationship to shen wei. his insecurities, his sense of alienation, his depression and the way he overcomes it, his protective tendencies, his absolutely otherworldly instincts and cunning, his resourcefulness, his ability to empathize and forgive... i highly recommend reading the novel, it's both very fun (as you can probably see from this poll) but also so so so tragic and heart wrenching
read guardian or else! 👁️👁️🔪

drama weilan is so good, they're funny, flirty and stupidly in love from the very beginning, but novel weilan is truly something else. they're off the charts levels of crazy weird (derogatory) the both of them. if you thought drama weilan scenes were the unhinged version of normal tropes, then you have to keep in mind they were obtained by passing the novel through a bleach wash twice. drama weilan are obsessed with each other, novel weilan are physically, spiritually and psychosexually entangled, literally having parts of each other's body and soul inside of them in a way that can never be unraveled and that was sealed by acts of cannibalism. drama weilan died for each other, novel weilan cursed each other as the only way to barely exist under the same sky, but never even within reach, killed for and actually vowed to kill each other with their bare hands not as enemies but as lovers sparing the other from that same curse that was needed for them to even have a remote chance of being together. fate asked them to choose the greater good, and they twisted fate so that the greater good could include their lover's good too, even if it meant causing them both harm. novel weilan constantly look for each other because they have that need etched in their bones. it's choosing the other but also needing the other to survive but also considering the option of dying to spare the other their suffering, a suffering which the other will always choose over another million things.

i think one of the most interesting ways to look at the differences between the series and the movie, is that the first is mostly from utena's and/or akio's perspective, while the latter is mostly from anthy's. and i like how this explains the drastic change in akio's character between the two. in the show he is more charismatic, more powerful, has a larger role in the story, because this is how he presents himself both to us as the audience and to utena. but anthy knows him and how pathetic he really is, and so when we see him in her narrative instead of his own, it becomes incredibly obvious. he can't drive his car, he doesn't have any real control over all the things he pretends to, he panics and kills himself the moment there's even the threat of consequences for what he does. it works doubly well if you read the movie as a sequel, because that's when anthy has truly lost all faith in him and the idea of the prince. he's dead the entire time because he's dead to her.

Lord Seventh merely shook his head, half exasperated, half amused. “Zishu, once you get to be my age-”
“I’m older than you.”
“-you’ll come to realize that the number of people in this world who will genuinely love you and at the same time not make you want to set yourself on fire are precious few. Cherish them.”

“And how much do you know about female anatomy?” Lord Seventh asked in a gotcha voice. “Think you can give a well-informed explanation?”
“How much do you know?” the Great Shaman asked him gently.
And for the first time since Wen Kexing had known him, Lord Seventh shut up.

Wu Xi basically telling Beiyuan: “I can’t fight you, pretty boy, you might break a nail”

Most people are saving for houses, or future retirement, etc.
Wu Xi is saving up “wife money” for his future high maintenance spouse who hasn’t even agreed to marry him. The Shamanet is determined, I’ll give him that 🤣
He saw that Jing Beiyuan enjoyed a life of being idle and pampered and instead of going “maybe I should choose a more productive partner” he said “welp, time to start saving up to keep my not-yet wife happy”

Wu Xi: these rooms are full of highly lethal and feral animals, please put your feet where I put them and don't make any sudden movements-
Jing BeiYuan, eyes sparkling and trotting around: seven lives, seven lives and I never saw anything like this! This is better than a zoo!

It says something about Jing BeiYuan's lingering trauma that HeLian Yi is the one that makes him nervous the moment he shows hints of jealousy while Wu Xi gets the 'not now kiddo' treatment for explicitly declaring his murderous intentions for Jing BeiYuan's possible crush.
