Japanese grammar: informal commands
Tumblr media
So here’s a verb form that my Japanese classes didn’t teach until like third or fourth year, which was kind of rough for me since so many of the one-word sentences in anime and manga use it. SO MANY.
It’s a simple, forceful, informal command, used more often by male speakers than female speakers. It sounds very blunt and can come across as pretty rude, so don’t use it in real conversations unless you really know what you’re doing!
How you make this form depends on what kind of verb you have.
If it’s a “ru” verb (which all end in -eru or -iru), you change the “ru” to “ro”:
たべる (taberu) “eat” –> たべろ (tabero) “Eat!”
やめる (yameru) “stop doing” –> やめろ (yamero) “Stop!” “Don’t!”
みる (miru) “look” or “see” –> みろ (miro) Look!
If it’s an “u” verb (which can end in any -u syllable), change the -u to -e:
いく (iku) “go” –> いけ (ike) “Go!”
まつ (matsu) “wait” –> まて (mate) “Wait!” [not “matse” because there isn’t a “tse” in Japanese, just a “te”]
いう (iu) “say” –> いえ (ie) “Say it!”
If it’s an irregular verb (する or くる):
する (suru) “do” –> しろ (shiro) “Do it!”
くる (kuru) “come” –> こい (koi) “Come here!”
Extra examples under the cut.

Goals of 2018
@salmon-jpg  tagged me in this  ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
✓ RULES: List 5 resolutions you have for 2018 and tag any accounts to spread the motivation.
1. I want to study more outside of my dorm room. I want to find some cute, peaceful cafes in York because I haven’t really explored the city yet.
2. Just like salmon-jpg, I want to start a Japanese diary. I need to practice casual and short forms and where we are in class atm is still very formal. I also want to start doing more listening/speaking exercises because that’s my weakest area T-T
3. I really want to try and be more active/interactive on tumblr, I don’t really tend to talk about myself much or talk to that many people on here, and everyone seems so lovely! ^^
4. I’m going to be super sensible with my money this year and save up enough so that I can travel around Japan while i’m studying there. It seems like a waste to spend all my time with my head in a book like I do at home.
5. Be selfish - This might sound like a bad one, but this year I am going to do things for me. I am going to work hard for me. I want to experience things that I want to experience, and not always try to accommodate others over myself.
Have a great 2018!

How to Create a Self-Study Schedule
Tumblr media
If you’re studying any foreign language on your own (or without a course) you’re going to need to be extra organized. Your language study is in your own hands and so is how much you learn. There is no one holding you accountable or motivated either. So it’s entirely up to you to make sure you’re organized and planning enough material that your learning at a comfortable pace. There are roughly two ways to learn languages on your own. There are roughly two ways to go about planning your language study: intensively or casually. Here are my tips for intensive studying and I’ll post about casual studying soon:

今週、林芙美子の小説を読んでいる。「絵本」だ。一ページのレポートを書かなきゃいけない。小説は面白いって思う。小さいな家に住んでいるお婆さんって,色々な楽しい事をする。小説にちょっと難しい漢字があるんで、でも文法は難しじゃない。あなたも「絵本」と言う小説を読むことをお勧めする!
This week we’re reading a short story by Fumiko Hayashi. It’s called 絵本 or “Picture book”. I have to write a one page report on it. I think the short story is interesting. There is an old lady who lives in a small house, and who does a variety of fun things. There are some pretty difficult kanji in the short story, but the grammar isn’t that hard. I recommend you read “Picture Book” too!
Here is a written version (warning, it has old Japanese) and here’s an e-book version.
