Jim O'Rourke - Banana Hall, Osaka, Japan, July 8, 1999
Since we checked out the Jim O'Rourke-produced Eiko Ishibashi masterpiece Antigone yesterday, here's some of Jim all by his lonesome, playing a relatively rare acoustic set in Osaka way back in 1999. After a freeform sound collage intro, O'Rourke gives the Banana Hall crowd a nice sampling of tunes from that trio of late 1990s classics — Bad Timing, Eureka and Halfway To A Threeway. I think I heard Jim recently claim he doesn't even own a guitar anymore, but the guy could pick with the best of them!
A little over a year before this Osaka gig, I saw O'Rourke open for Sonic Youth in Los Angeles, and — correct me if I'm wrong, Jim Heads! — his entire set was a 30+ minute rendition of "Women Of The World Take Over," Ivor Cutler's mantra repeating ad infinitum, until the words stamped themselves on your skull. I was just a kid then, I didn't really understand what was happening. But maybe I understand now?
