After years in the pet food industry I've decided it's time for pet food companies to talk about what's really in their food, where it's sourced from and why there are so many recalls every year. If you have a pet and want to learn more about the industry behind the food you buy then this is the blog for you!

That’s a good list... to start. Sadly, many more brands we could easily add.

Found a great pet store.

I’ll let you in on a little secret...
Hi, it’s Dave here. After a bunch of years in the pet food industry, I thought that other pet parents might be interested in learning about what goes on behind the scenes in the pet food industry. To be honest, things aren’t all that great, so if you don’t really want to know the truth then go do something else (I enjoy losing to my wife in Words with Friends). If you are interested in getting an insider’s perspective then read on!
Pet Food Recalls
Today I’m going to talk about pet food recalls. I did some research using the fantastic dogfoodadvisor.com website and was surprised by the results.
The PREMIUM dog food industry averaged almost FOUR recalls a quarter! Wow, that is a lot of recalls for premium dog food (the kind you find a specialty pet store). I would have expected that for grocery store brands but not the good stuff! What was even more surprising was the reason given for the recalls.
Salmonella and Listeria were the biggest reason for premium dog food recalls followed by product contamination, improper nutrient levels and things like mold or defective packaging. Some companies recalled product but didn’t feel like pet parents needed to know why - so they just said there was a recall (thanks a lot!).
What makes these findings so surprising is that something like Salmonella, Listeria or nutrient levels is easy (and relatively inexpensive) to test for and identify BEFORE the product ships to a pet store. So why don’t more pet food manufacturers run these tests?
Check back next week and I’ll tell you what I’ve learned and what you can do to protect yourself and your pets from recalls.
Take care,
Dave

Know Which Side the Bread is Buttered
Client: Hi, I’d like to buy some food for my dog please.
Me: Of course!
Client: -brings bag of Gastrointestinal Low Fat to the desk-
Me: Hmm…I don’t see any history here saying that Fido needs this diet, is there a certain reason you wanted to feed him this?
Client: I’m trying to maintain his weight and this is low fat, so…
Me: Oh! I see. What you want is the Gastrointestinal Moderate Calorie, this one is low fat, yes, but it is not meant for weight loss.
Client: I don’t understand the difference?
Me: This diet is mostly meant for patients who aren’t able to tolerate fatty food very well. Think of a piece of toast that has no butter on it. Same calories, but lower in fat.
Client: …I want him to have butter… -changes food-
